Babel, Dec 16, (VOI) – The Governor of Babel Province escaped an attempt on his life when gunmen attacked his convoy on the road linking Hilla to the Iraqi capital, a local media spokesman said on Sunday. Babel is the home of most ancient Babylonian and Assyrian artifacts, and the home of the legendary Tower of Babel. It’s northern portions are part of the the infamous “Triangle of Death”, it’s southern regions much more peaceful.
“Babel Governor Salim al-Maslamawi survived an assassination bid while he was en-route with a tribal delegation to Baghdad to meet with the head of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC) Abdul Aziz al-Hakeem,” Jawad Hassoun told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“Clashes erupted between the governor’s guards and the attacker, prompting the latter to flee to an unknown destination,” Hassoun indicated.
Hilla, the capital city of Babel province, lies 100 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
