Muslim Woman/ACLU Sue Sheriff’s Dept For Making Her Remove Hijab For Booking
A 29-year-old Muslim woman sued San Bernardino County and its sheriff Wednesday, alleging that deputies violated her rights by forcing her to remove the head scarf she wears because of her religious beliefs.
The American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California filed the complaint on behalf of Jameelah Medina in U.S. District Court in Santa Ana — accusing the county and the Sheriff’s Department of breaching Medina’s right to practice her religion as well as a 2000 federal law enhancing protections of prisoners’ religious liberty. She was arrested in 2005 for carrying an invalid Metrolink pass.
Cindy Beavers, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, said she could not comment.
“I can tell you that anybody who comes in wearing any type of head covering — they would have to remove it at the time of booking and that would be for security purposes,” Beavers said.
As Medina was being booked and searched at West Valley, Medina told a female sheriff’s deputy she could not remove the head scarf, known as a hijab, for religious reasons. The deputy threatened to delay Medina’s release if she did not follow orders, the complaint says.

Nods to Little Green Footballs.
I’d find a way to charge her again. Interfering with police work or what not? There has to be some law out there like that. She broke the law once. You forfeit some of your rights when you do that. Take it off or we’ll cut it off. Oh, and make sure a man does the strip search.
December 7th, 2007 at 1:39 pmmuslims are really pissing me off. Obviously a muslim with a lot of time on it’s hands. It happened in ‘05, and it’s just suing now? Probably can’t hold a job.
December 7th, 2007 at 2:08 pmIf California wants to do crazy, lets do crazy.
I hope this moonbat wins and wins BIG!!!
We having fun yet sliding down the slippery PC slope California? Now keep pumping in those tax dollars Californians cause sooner rather than later you’re going to discover PC is easy but it ain’t cheap.
December 7th, 2007 at 2:35 pmI have a suggestion for Ms. Hijab… DON’T BREAK THE LAW AND REQUIRE THE SERVICES OF THE SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY JAIL YOU WENCH!!!!!!
December 7th, 2007 at 2:37 pmIf her head came off with it then she has a legitimate complaint
December 7th, 2007 at 2:44 pmWhen the fuck did a bad bus pass become a jailable offense!
Sounds like a county run money making racket.
Although, if you are going to jail you gotta take the scarf off. I just do not agree with hauling ANYONE to jail over a bus pass.
December 7th, 2007 at 5:23 pmI guess we are going to need prisons for muslim women that have no male correctional officers? The ACLU just cements the image we already know, that they are the anti christion liberal union. If a christian has their vcivil rights violated they dance with glee, but any “minority” and they are outraged. I believe they were the ones responsible for a lawsuit in florida on behalf of a muslim woman who refused to take off her face covering to have her face photographed for a drivers license.
All the more reason to give freedom of religion in this country one exception: Islam. because its doctrinal refusal to have its adherants assimilate into whatever culture they have chosen to be a part of.
If you convert to Islam, pack your bags and move to saudi arabia, they will accomodate every “religious ” fancy, we have neither the time nor the inclination to do so.
December 7th, 2007 at 5:55 pm“As Medina was being booked and searched at West Valley”
Not jailed,Reno. After cooperating with the photo, summons and fingerprinting she would be released, probably on her own recognizance.
December 7th, 2007 at 8:13 pmGoddamn muzzies think they’re superior to US law enforcement and the ACLU continually aid any enemy of our way of life. The reckoning that is coming will see the ACLU on the list and in the ditch.
The ACLU should pay for ALL of the court costs when it loses such stupid, baseless cases. If they had to pay the costs they incurred (at reasonable rates), I think they’d take on far fewer cases and be much more careful about the stuff they sometimes lamely defend.
December 7th, 2007 at 10:50 pmIn this country you are not allowed to hide your facial features. If she’s got a problem with our laws…then leave.
December 8th, 2007 at 7:00 amClyde,
You have obviously never been “booked” and do not know what the fuck you are talking about.
If you are getting pictures and fingerprints, you are going to the slammer. You sit and wait for a bail to be set, and hope you get through to someone on the outside to get a bail bond.
If you dont believe me, just try it out for yourself.
December 10th, 2007 at 9:12 amOh, and here. It is a jail you naive ass.
FYI, you can be taken to the slammer for except a traffic violation. Just ask Officer Ruiz of the HoustonMetroPolice. He offered to take me downtown for drinking a coffee on the Metrorail after I opened my smart mouth and told him he should be proud of solving such a high profile crime.
Still, shoulda taken off the scarf.
