December 17th, 2007 at 4:49 pmYeah Bash. Thought you would get off on that :).
I remembered when you were talking about growing up in Hawaii, the elder’s blessing at the testing range, etc and thought it might mean something special to ya. Gotta admit man, I had to google it to get the spelling right. Ha!
Anyway, I wanted to do something nice for ya as payback for all the good shit you have done for us. Not nearly enough though…
Truly do hope you and yours have a very blessed Christmas Bash.
Dittos for Pat, the special forces, all the dollardheads and especially all of our military men and women so far from home this Christmas - you are closer to home than you think in our hearts and prayers.

December 17th, 2007 at 6:29 pmMerry Christmas to all!
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
And thought how, as the day had come
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep.
“God is not dead, nor doth he sleep!
The wrong shall fail,
The right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men!”
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

December 20th, 2007 at 4:13 pm(And a belated Happy Hannukah to those of you who are Jewish.)
As Tiny Tim said, “God bless us, every one!”
“Though you may not have noticed it beneath your tree, the troops here have sent you a gift that is far more valuable than a new hand tool or iPod. It’s a present they made by hand, with extraordinary care so you can use it every day for the rest of your life — and that your children can use after you are gone…
So, your Christmas present — the triumph we now witness in Iraq — is not quite finished, but the troops are sending it to you anyway. This country’s neighbors are less than enthusiastic about a democracy next door. We have seen the sophisticated IEDs and rockets that Iran builds and sends into Iraq to kill and maim. Though Iraqi oil production now exceeds pre-2003 levels, the democratically elected government in Baghdad isn’t doing enough to rebuild the country’s crumbling infrastructure. From the ground up, this country is being transformed more rapidly than anyone believed possible and America is gaining a new ally in the struggle against radical Islamic terror.
That’s your Christmas present this year from America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Guardsmen and Marines here in the land between the rivers. In case you wonder what this gift cost, know it demanded extraordinary sacrifice requiring some to give all — and all to give some.

December 23rd, 2007 at 8:54 pmMerry Christmas friends!
December 24th, 2007 at 10:10 amMerry Christmas to all.
December 24th, 2007 at 10:18 amAn elderly Air Force fighter pilot friend of mine (WWII, Korea, and Vietnam)sent this alog to me and I thought I’d share:
The Night Before Christmas (aviation style)
Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tie downs with care,
In hopes that come morning, they all would be there.
The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.
When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.
He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I’d have sworn th at the call sign he used was “St. Nick”.
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.
He called his position, no room for denial,
“St. Nicholas One, turnin left onto final.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!!
With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name.
“Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun! On Comet! On Cupid!
What pills was he takin?
While controllers were sittin, and scratchin their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread.
The message they left was both urgent and dour,
“When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower.
” He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard “Left at Charlie” and “Taxi to parking.”
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh,
And stopped on the ramp with a “HO, ho-ho-ho…”
He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost,
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.
His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn’t inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a crop dusters belly.
He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to “fill it, with hundred low-lead.”
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin’ the sump.
I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.
And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell “Clear!!”
And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
“Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilots discretion”.
He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
“Your traffics a Grumman, inbound from the west.”
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed thru the night,
Merry Christmas to all!! I have traffic in sight.”
