Videogame Threat Leads To School Disruption & Arrest
From Noah Schachtman at Wired:
19 year-old Allieu Shaw was, until today, going to school at Frostburg State University. Now, he’s suspended — and facing two years in jail — for what he did, in a game.
Shaw was allegedly playing Call of Duty 4 online, when he allegedly “made an audible statement about ’shooting up the school’ and described how he was going to do it,” according to the AP. Another player, in Oregon, told Frostburg (Maryland) City Police about the threat. And they got all kinds of other authorities involved — including Microsoft, which “provided technical assistance in identifying the student’s IP address,” according to a university press release.
“At one point, more than 40 officers were patrolling the campus and assisting in the investigation… When the student was identified, that student’s person and residence were searched and no weapons or other dangerous devices were found.” Shaw has been charged with “disrupting school operations,” and could get two years in the clink — and $10,000 in fines — if he’s convicted. Nice move, genius.

Was his ‘Minority Report’ reviewed before his arrest?
December 12th, 2007 at 9:05 pmI got no problem with this. Don’t drop the soap, Shaw. What a dipshit.
December 12th, 2007 at 9:13 pmNot the wisest move in the world, to be sure. Hey dumbass, other people can hear you in-game. Call of Duty 4 is awesome though .
It makes me realize though how much trouble I could have been in as a teenager, some friends and I created a DOOM level that matched the layout of our school campus. It was mainly just to run through for fun, had no enemies in it at all. No big deal 11 years ago, but if somebody did that today….hoo boy.

December 13th, 2007 at 5:49 amAny audio evidence? What if I said I was going to go to my college and have a T-Bagging fest (Halo anyone?)? I need to try that COD4, looks awesome.

I hear you on that, i remember when i was in high school, i used to have the phrase “kill teacher” on my folders and what not. I am not sure why, or what it was supposed to mean, i was justs wacky punk rocker, but to think of the trouble i would get into today. It’s a sad state of affairs when anomalous events like columbine & Virginia tech come to dominate the everyday lives of people.
“won’t you tell me, where have all the good times gone?”
