Way too fooking close for comfort. What’s the range of an RPG-7/7V? 500 meters? Too close. Enough diplomacy. Kill the bastards next time. Let Iran go to war with us. We’ll crush their military like a bug.
January 8th, 2008 at 4:43 pmToo fucking close for me!
January 8th, 2008 at 5:08 pmThe Iranians were trying to provoke an incident or to see how close they could get. Let ‘em play their games…
January 8th, 2008 at 5:16 pmThen we can give them a first hand demonstration of Phalanx Block 1B.
Fire fucking warning shots. Don’t they have guns!
January 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pmThe timing of this seems connected to Bush’s visit.
If iran gets the U.S. Navy to make some fresh baked “martyrs”,
iran gets sympathy and rage from their mooj brothers during the POTUS visit.
Maybe even incite some douche to try taking out W.
It fits their pattern, always getting others to do the work for them.
It’s just a theory.
January 8th, 2008 at 7:06 pm5 sunken speedboats and no survivors = no news and no headlines. An RPG-7 wouldn’t have done squat to that ship but make some dings in the paint. But that very same boat packed full of explosives could have made quite a mess… USS Cole anyone?
I think the Iranians were playing chicken to see if we would flinch. If we shot warning shots towards them, then they could have claimed that we fired on them unprovoked and in international waters, and if we only winged them, then they could have limped back to Iranian waters and said we shot them there… just like “the British were in our waters”…
Can the Phalanx depress low enough to engage targets that close? I know that a .50 cal couldn’t have stopped those boats if they decided to do a suicide attack. They were too close to get enough rounds from the .50 into the hull to sink it unless the hit explosive charges or gas tank. Diesel wouldn’t have ignited and they could have closed. Now a 25mm would have probably done the trick but it would have been a close call.
Kudos on the Captains for not blinking.
January 8th, 2008 at 8:04 pmWarning Shots? Excuse me? If you point a gun pull the damn trigger! Enough of the BS. It is time to stop the aggression.
January 8th, 2008 at 9:47 pmThose speed boats were anano-seconds away from being destroyed..
January 8th, 2008 at 10:38 pmWas a “very tiny boat” that blew a fucking hole in the side of the USS Cole and killed our people!
Boom! Boom! Boom! Kaboom! Kaboom! Kaboom!
Done.
Chow time!
January 8th, 2008 at 10:54 pmKufir Ken,
Phalanx Block 1B has a Surface Engagement Mode. It has an FLIR that allows it to engage surface targets as well as slow moving air targets (small a/c and hovering helos).

Thanks, my limited experience with those things is being woken up by the sound of them practicing back in my ship riding days. No idea what they can do other than throw a whole lotta hate downrange. I would have liked to see them lock on to those little bastards and turn them into hamburger.
