Al Qaeda Attacks Pakistan Fort
ISLAMABAD, Jan. 22 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Pakistan’s military said Tuesday that militants killed five government soldiers and wounded seven others in an attack overnight on a fort in a northwestern region of the country near the border with Afghanistan.
The military said “miscreants,” a reference to pro-Taliban militants in the area, fired their weapons at the Ladha Fort, located about 360 kilometers southeast of Islamabad in South Waziristan Agency, and attacked an observation post at around 1 a.m. Monday.
Government forces retaliated, causing “heavy” enemy casualties, it said in a statement posted on its website.
Since the beginning of the month, the military has reported numerous incidents of fighting between militants and government forces at Ladha Fort.
Pakistani tribesmen are carrying out an armed struggle against the deployment of the Pakistani army and paramilitary troops in the area, which had long been outside the jurisdiction of the central government.
Troops were deployed there in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States after allied and Afghan troops complained that al-Qaida and Taliban insurgents were carrying out cross-border attacks into Afghanistan from Pakistan.
