Cold War Chess Champ Bobby Fischer Dies
I remember this magazine issue very well. Weird how magazine covers can stick in your mind 30 years later, but I couldn’t tell you where the hell I put my car keys…
When I was a kid it was all about “Da Russians are coming” and “Duck and Cover” and “We could be nuked at any moment by them Russians” and Fallout Shelters and Geiger Counters…so when Bobby Fischer beat the Russian guy in the world chess championships, he was a hero to many.
Then he got weirder. Don’t know exactly what happened to his brain, but given said brain, which was not normal, one wouldn’t expect normalcy from someone like Fischer.
Then he disappeared.
I never knew this Bobby Fischer…probably better that way.
He was like O.J., one of my childhood heroes that professionally was the best of the best of his time, but in reality, a true fuckwit.
Whatever. Remembering Fischer beating the Russian and $3.50 will get me an espresso at my local drive-thru.
Check…and…mate.
Amazing contrast. A man so intelligent in one way can be so imbecile in another. Reminds me of Howard Hughes.
