“Iran Cannot Be Stopped Militarily”
“A military option doesn’t exist. You can only delay” Iranian nuclear armament through military means, according to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, speaking to journalists Tuesday on the sidelines of the Herzliya Conference.
Asked if the world could live with a nuclear Iran, he replied with the question, “Can you stop it? The only way we can be certain of succeeding is an agreement with Iran that’s verifiable. Military options won’t do the trick.”
Bildt also spoke of the Annapolis process, which he believes is the best possibility for peace between Israel and the Palestinians to date.
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt..
“There are three factors now that we haven’t seen before,” he explained. “There is an Israeli prime minister who said there’s a partner for peace, the active involvement of the world seen at the Paris donors’ conference, and suddenly the active involvement of the United States.”
According to Bildt, the world sees a “virtual collapse of the Gazan economy” with recent Israeli cuts to the strip’s fuel supply. He warned that “Israel will be seen in the eyes of the world as responsible for a humanitarian disaster.” Even if Israel tries to end its responsibility for the Gaza Strip, “you can’t get rid of responsibility for access” to the Strip, Bildt said.

No military option my ass. If we got some allies involved we could definitely stop them militarily. If all swedes think like this guy does then they need to stick to making meatballs.

Ditto, except I am assuming you are saying that we need some allies involved for political cover and not because we don’t have the means of kicking the shit out of them by ourselves.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:37 pmMassive bombing campaigns, done as often as needed are a military solution that would stop Iran getting nukes. The only thing stopping this from happening tomorrow is a lack of political will. Iran is playing lefty wusses like Bildt like a fiddle.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:43 pmThe Swedes should stick to their IKEA stores and lingonberries… Yeah, Israel has a prime minister who says there is a real palestinian peace partner. That would be the same prime minister who appointed the putz Peretz as defence minister, the rapist Katsav as president. Such an excellent judge of character! Not to mention that he’s in the single digits in opinion polls.
Blasting Iran into the dark ages they so cherish in all respects except technical would mean that it would be a very long time indeed before they could start trying to play the nuclear game again. If Bildt is stupid enough to think that Iran would abide by any agreement they might make to not, for example, share nuclear material and technology with anyone, then perhaps he’d like to buy a summer property in Sderot.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm@ Joe, definitely. we could whip the Iranians asses in no time flat. Just bombing runs. this guy saying there is no military option is unfortunately the way the entire UN sees things. We will have to handle it alone or with the Israelis, either way
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:48 pmi call bullshit!!! military option will turn the Islamic Republic of Iran into The Republic of Iran, it will turn foe into friend and it will turn an Islamic theocracy controlled by ayatollahs into a free democracy ruled by it’s citizens.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:49 pmUm? Excuse me Mr. Swedish Dipshit. You think that 24 D-5 Trident II missiles with Multiple Independent Warheads at over 500 kilotons a piece sitting silently and undetected off the coast is a military option that won’t work? Wow I think you need to go back to elementary school and play on the swing-set. Leave it to the big boys.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 pmI’m sure he was on the “no military solution in Iraq” bandwagon too.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:50 pmI think a country by the name of Japan once boasted that they couldn’t be stopped militarily…I’ll bet in the blink of a blast cloud, I mean eye, Iran could be stopped.
I’m tired of stupid people - and I’ve noted invariably they’re closet Jew haters too. Look at this schmuck - Helen Thomas’ son.
January 22nd, 2008 at 5:31 pmBildt obviously hasn’t heard the news that direct power continues to be supplied, and Hamas has deliberately shut off its generators for blocks of time to simulate a crisis.
Or maybe he has, but can’t quite grasp the concept.
January 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 pmI don’t think he was speaking to Israel directly without the US in mind
For all intents and purposes, his opinions are worthy of reading

January 22nd, 2008 at 6:32 pmTo the people suggesting nuclear weapons as a way to attack Iran, you are not that smart. We want precise strikes, not carpet bombing with nukes. There are innocent people in Iran whether you chose to believe that or not. It would not go over well with a lot of our allies if we did that either.
Everyone here seems to be forgetting about the consequences of such a military action against Iran. Without unanimous support from European nations, some Middle eastern nations, and Russia it would be foolish to do anything close to a sustained military effort in Iran.
As a response to James, did Iraq does magically change into a democracy after we attacked? Even then that required an invasion and an invasion of Iran just wouldn’t work out too well.
I have nothing against striking Iran with precision strikes to take out their military power like their airstrips, communications, tanks, and army bases but only when there is a clear threat aka Iran attacks someone else or we have reliable intelligence that they plan to attack. Also, only with unanimous support for such an action.
January 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pm@joe
January 22nd, 2008 at 6:58 pmUnanimous support from the EU, Russia “some” mid east nations ain’t going to happen.
I choose not to put my country at risk at the wim of a popularity vote.
The only way to stop Iran is with military force…unless the Iraniacs overthrow their leaders first. But just like the Germans and Japanese of WWII Iraniacs have been cowed by the dictaorial Iraniac regime.
There are always innocents killed in war. I’m sure there were plenty of said innocents that were killed in Germany and Japan in WWII. We did what we had to do to end the fucking war.
And if we need to turn Iran into a glass factory to stop them…so be it.
Joe, why don’t you get out your old 60’s LP’s and sing a few choruses of Kumbaya to yourself…
Fuck Iran. Kill the regime, and their military. Destroy Al Quds and Hizbollah…
You want to save innocents? What about the innocents in Israel or Lebanon? I guess they don’t count huh?
Destroy this regime and maybe Lebanon and Israel can be free. And maybe those EFP’s that Al Quds is supplying pro-Iraniac militias in Iraq and Afghanistan will stop being used against our troops and innocent civilians in both Battlespaces….
Did I say Fuck Iran yet? Ooops…my bad….
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:21 pmIran is the number 1 backer of all terrorist organizations all over the world..from the chechen rebels to hamas…I
January 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 pmYou misconstrue caution as me being a peace nick. I would love nothing else to just be able to wipe Iran off the map. Hell, nuke the entire middle east. But I was taking the real world approach. You can not just go around saying I’m gonna nuke this and blow up that without a good reason and without getting help at the risk of being the bad guy even if what you are doing is “right”. Also, going after civilians when it is the terrorists and leader we are after is wrong. Unless, there is a serious threat to the world and that attacking the civilian population is the best way to save more lives down the road. Indiscriminate killing makes up no better than a terrorist, especially when we have the tech for precise strikes.
Example being Iraq, we believed there was a significant threat and got rid of it as well as a dictator. That should look good in anyone’s eyes but the whole world hates us because of the attitude of going it alone and defying some of our bigger allies. As well as misinformation that we lied about it for some conspiracy theory to get oil etc.
January 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 pmI hear you Joe
I think most know the reality but still would like to express a less political approach
