YA Music Fundraising Drive - Urgent

January 14th, 2008 Posted By Pat Dollard.

It’s looking quite clear that I am going to need a reserve fund to pay the licesne fees for some very pricey songs, like Johnny Cash’s ( my ex, a hairdresser, fixed a bad Albertson’s cheapo die job he id on himself which made his hair purple, when she was the hair dresser on Duvall’s “The Apostle”, and was June’s hairdresser through the show, and I’ve got an awesome fucking picture of Johnny and June holding Jessica when she was about 2 1/2 ) version of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” ( Weirdly, the picture above was taken in the hotel where Johnny and June and I last spoke just months before they both passed away. ) I’m basically looking to have one signature licensed song per episode, that sums up the primary heart and soul and essence of each episode.

Now Showtime is paying us a fair price, and they only have so much money per season for shows and are starting to suffer badly like everyone else, so I have no complaints with Showtime on the issue, and often times when I’m demanding we use that one great song that costs an assload, I don’t feel right pushing my Tony to risk kinda crazy amounts of money to back the creative risks I’m trying to take, so I’m looking to protect the final perfection of the show through each of these key songs and am asking the collective YA Team Of America to help me come together and put together our music fund.

Please donate as much as you can as soon as possible using the donation button at the top of the page, the funds will be put into a specific music reserve, and I say “as soon as you can” because there are a couple of songs that I have to make moves on fast. And the whole process gets even a bit further difficult and complicated, because due to the controversial poltical nature of both “Young Americans” and yours truly, I am literally going to have move both Heaven and Earth, and make intense personal pitches to the artists themselves, and travel to God Knows Where, to sit with these people and show them the devestatingly humane, not crazily polticial, manner in which they’re songs are to be used. Let me put it this way, one Massive Music Legend ( whose been around for 40 years ) first said yes, and then pulled back, but it wasn’t me dealing with him directly. I can’t be taking money needed for other things out of the budget for the travel and other needs of the campaign for me to sit and have the right personal moment with these musicians and show them how their songs have been cut and used. It’s all just a pain in the ass. Cos not only am I locked to the room to get the cut done on a tight schedule, but now I’m going to have to travel and battle all over half the globe to get the music I need. And trust me, these aren’t cavalier choices, it’s like I said, each song is married to images/events that for me it is nearly the key moment of every episode. Rewatch the credit sequence to get some sense of what I’m talking about.

Each song I want is chosen is so carefully, and woven into the show to bring about a certain crescendo of emotion and truth, that despite whatever resistance I may might from famous artists reluctant to have their material in such a controversial, the sheer human power of the use of their songs will make them “get it”, and enthusiatically happy and perhaps even honored to have their work used in the manner that I use it.

I just need y’all’s help to have the resources to get this very campaign launched and pressed ahead to victory.

Thanks in advance to those of you who can and choose to help.

 Cheers Pat! Money’s a little tight right this second with bills and all, but if you at all like any of these tunes my group does, you can use them, and we’re not going to cost you an arm and a leg, and we’re longtime music professionals who can actually really play their instruments, which in this day and age of really crappy soul-less “music”, can be quite rare. Some of the groups that have gotten famous and rich in music these days are just plain ol’ really, really talentless (*cough cough* White Stripes *cough cough*), just to be brutally honest. Anyways, if you hear anything you like and would want to use, drop me a note. If not, I’ll help any other way I can, PERIOD.

I can’t fucking wait to see this shit man!!!

    As always, Semper Fidelis!

    And the blood gave life
To the branches of the tree
And the blood was the price
    That set the captives free
    And the numbers that came
Through the fire and the flood Clung to the tree
And were redeemed by the blood

    ….

There were nights I don’t remember
And there’s pain that I’ve forgotten
Other things I choose not to recall
There are faces that come to me
    In my darkest secret memory
Faces that I wish would not come back at all

I think the last released recording of June with Johnny was ‘We’ll meet again’, it was popular during WWII for obvious reasons.

We’ll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when,
but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day!
    We’ll meet again, we’ll meet again . .

    …..

Pat you can load this with Cash lyrics if you ask me, it’s very tight, but not out, will send some today.

    Drive On,

Hey Pat, I sent what I could man, I hope it helps. As an unemployed college student I don’t make as much as I did when I was a Corporal in the Marine Corps(although that wasn’t much either) but whatever extra cash I have will definately find its way to you. Semper Fi and God Bless.

Pat, I sent $50 your way! I wish I could send more but we college students must remain frugal. I didn’t see a text box for shirt sizes either, so I placed it in the address line. Didn’t get my shirt last year but I’ll hold you feet to the fire this time. (j/k) Now I’m just waiting for Genn’s rendering of you for our amusement!!! Keep pushing forward!

Pat, again here’s a little more cash for your worthy endeavor. We don’t subscribe to Showtime, so will have to wait patiently for the CD release. Thanks for caring enough to get the straight story of our volunteer (my son included) military out for all to see. Would be great to see you make at least a couple dollars an hour profit for your sweat and tears on this documentary. I’m honored to be able to be a (very) small part of this great project.

  14. Richard Quinn

Guess I’ll be waiting a long time for the CD release  meant DVD!

    Pat,
    Donation is on it’s way
    Good luck with the project

  16. Tony

Money coming Pat. I don’t need a t-shirt I already have one. I ordered Showtime just to see this show.

  17. kevin

    once I get a job, expect a donation :)
By the way, anything by Trent Reznor fucking kicks ass. Hurt is one of my favorite songs - love to see it find it’s way into YA (though I guess I’d argue that you use the NIN version since what many of these marines grew up listening to).

I’ve already sent some funds your way and have suggested you contact Charlie Overbey, who is a local-Hollywood-Los Angeles musician. He runs a music booking agency and just might have the ‘connections’ you are looking for. He has good contacts with rock/punk/country bands throughout the USA. I thought this is what you might be looking for.., good, kick-ass music from the heart of the USA.

No chew toys for the puppies this month. $ on the way.

Missed today’s mail. But a check is on the way.

I’ll give what little I can, just expect from a lowly college student as me. Here’s another song that I might suggest including, Sammy Hagar’s “VOA” from the album, VOA (same album as “I Can’t Drive 55:). Great video, and the song applied as much to the 80s, as it does now!
