Karbala, Feb 12– Karbala policemen killed three members of al-Qaeda, captured 11 others and seized a car bomb in clashes west of Karbala during the early hours of Tuesday, a security official said.
“Our security forces carrying out Operation Diaa (Light) killed three terrorists in armed clashes north of Ayn al-Tamr district, (120 km) west of Karbala,” Maj. General Raed Shakir Jawdat, the Karbala chief of operations and police director, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

“The armed clashes, which continued for an hour, erupted after receiving intelligence tips on the presence of terrorists in the area,” said Jawdat.
“We also managed to capture 11 gunmen of al-Qaeda network and seized a car bomb ready to be detonated,” he added.
Diaa, a security operation being carried out since Tuesday, is targeting gunmen and their gathering points and aims to scan desert areas surrounding Karbala and seize weapons ahead of the Arbaeen, a religious pilgrimage commemorating the 40th day after the death of Imam al-Hussein, who was killed in the battle of Taf in Karbala on the Muslim Hegira calendar year of 61, or 680 on the Gregorian calendar.

The holy Shiite city of Karbala, said to house the tomb of Imam al-Hussein, a top holiest figure highly venerated by Shiite Muslims, lies 130 km southwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
