Barack Obama said he will debate Hillary Clinton in Ohio before the March 4 primary.
Ohio voters could get their only look at Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama together at a debate Feb. 26 at Cleveland State University.
Obama’s campaign announced Thursday night that he had accepted an invitation from NBC News to the debate, to be moderated by Brian Williams and Tim Russert. His campaign also said he will participate in a debate in Texas.
“I think we said we will do two more debates, and at least one of them will be in Ohio,” he told Plain Dealer editors and reporters Thursday afternoon during a phone interview. “I’m not sure exactly what communications have been going on between my staff and Sen. Clinton’s.”
Clinton is eager to debate Obama again — they have already faced off 18 times — and committed immediately to participate in a CNN-sponsored debate in Ohio planned for later this month. (See note above for a late update. Both candidates have now committed to a Cleveland debate instead.)
Obama said Wednesday that he didn’t “think anybody is clamoring for more debates.”
“What we don’t want to do is have a debate every few days, given that it is very imporant for me to actually reach voters, something that may be less important for Sen. Clinton to do because she is better known in many parts of the country,” he said Thursday. ” We have such a compressed schedule, it is important for us to be able to travel around Ohio as much as possible. Whenever there is a debate, that is a day that is lost. ”
Obama didn’t identify the other debate he plans to participate in.
