Update: Harry Determined To Return To The Front Lines

(AFP) - Prince Harry may be returning from the Afghan frontline to a hero’s welcome, but he seems far from happy with England, notably life on the media frontline, according to remarks released Friday.

The Ministry of Defence said the 23-year-old was being pulled out of Afghanistan “immediately” after a US website breached a media blackout on his presence in the violence-scarred southern province of Helmand.

Officials have praised the British media for strictly adhering to the embargo on reporting Harry’s deployment, which came after he was unable to go to Iraq last year due to concerns for his security.

But Harry, third in line to the British crown, didn’t seem overly happy with his homeland’s press, who have given generous coverage in recent years to his partying escapades in the nightclubs of London and elsewhere.

“I don’t want to sit around in Windsor,” he said, referring to his barracks near a royal residence outside London in a pooled interview in Afghanistan last week, released after the blackout on his whereabouts was broken.

“But I generally don’t like England that much and, you know, it’s nice to be away from all the press and the papers and all the general shite that they write.”

Harry’s media image will certainly benefit from his adventures in Afghanistan.

Top-selling daily The Sun described him as “a man of outstanding courage who has risked having his head blown off by the Taliban so he can serve his country with his mates.”

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown described him as an “exemplary soldier (who) is serving with dedication in the finest tradition of our armed forces.”

Hell, I think we’d be happy to have him as a guest on this side of the pond. I think it would especially go well with the ball cap I saw him wearing this morning in footage from an interview shown on FOX.

The back is especially good, where it states, “WE DO BAD THINGS TO BAD PEOPLE”.

Just goes to prove that while the political leadership in Britain may be FUBAR’ed sometimes, there is still some life left in the people.

One caveat to us welcoming him though…They’ve GOT to take Beckham and Posh Spice back.

Thank God! Finally a royal that isn’t useless!

I hope they let him pack heat when he gets back home; lotta hostile rag heads there that’ll want him dead. At least in Afghanistan, he can call on CAS and have combat-ready troops to protect him.

  4. ( CAPT-DAX )

he stood up moved up and took point,
he’s a man of Honor,as all the brave Solders are.

God bless them all. cheers!

  5. Reign in Blood

He should be first in line for the crown and not third. Cheers to him.

A man after my own heart … even if you do walk around in flip-flops and shorts in the middle of winter …

One Prince Harry is worth a million decadent, comfortable nay-sayers sitting at home in England. Good for him!

Drudge sucks for blowing his cover - I hope his site picks up jackass points from this episode.

Hell, he’s probably safer over there where he and his buddies are always armed and armored than in Londonistan - let him stay if he wants to. He’s a soldier, he’s taking the same chances his buddies are. Like I said in another comment, not sure I agree with Drudge about outing him like that but I do think it would have come out eventually, most likely near the end of his deployment.

Harry has been in the ATO for 10 weeks … The tour of duty was to be 14 weeks …

Pretty damn good stretch, considering the Brit news media.

  10. KBar

You would think he could afford to buy a decent holster!

Thinking of the Brit Cav guys I’ve done training with a couple of times (Bright Star ‘01 and Salisbury Plain), carrying their sidearm in that fashion is quite common. The Spartan’s (their version of the Bradley essentially) commander’s cupola doesn’t provide much maneuver room to be able to access a thigh holster and even shoulder holsters can be tricky due to snags, etc. BUT, one would think that he would’ve been able to get his hands on a good MOLLE holster (I think I have an extra squirled away under my bed even)

Let’s see, gotta MOW MY GRASS this weekend. should be in the upper 60’s to 70’s too so guess what…flip-flop and shorts again! Meanwhile…oh man I just looked at yall’s radar and it looks shitty.

Have a “fun” weekend!

Normally I like the Drudge report, but Matt Drudge should have known better. to what should be Englands future King…

  13. KBar

 Erik, I was just thinking that carrying a sidearm like that exposes it to even more dust/grit/dirt/ etc. than normal, especially in the ATO.

  14. ukatheist

the press he refers too is the sun the mirror and sundays news of the world, usually bought by soap opera watching, tracksuit wearing, mouth breathers, and no! we do not want becks and posh back thank you very much.

Damn drillanwr! I’m painting all our windows black. I don’t want you posting what I wear (or not) on a cold winter’s eve!

Now, that little flannel number you wear …

Actually, Erik (on the Texas Gulf Coast) has made a point of rubbing mine and Kurt’s noses in our Ohio cold/snow all winter, while he flip-flops around and mows his lawn in shorts …

  18. KBar

    drillanwr,

No kidding about the snow and cold in Ohio. I moved from Buffalo to Akron for this?! I was told it never snows here!! Damn liberals LIED to me again.

When did you move to Akron?

Oh, and don’t worry about all the current attention we’re getting in the news. Just as soon as the 2008 presidential election is over the politicians and the MSM will go back to ignoring Ohio …

  22. HDZ

heros welcome? for what? many guys have been to afganiraq

  23. Lone Wolf

Yup, many guys have been to “afganiraq” and they *all* deserve a hero’s welcome.

    drillanwr,
Accepted a job offer down here last year. I do like it here, and I’m not far at all from family in Buffalo.
