In a rare occurrence, the CIA fired an officer who acknowledged giving classified information to a reporter, NBC News learned Friday.

The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.

Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA’s inspector general’s office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.

The leak pertained to stories on the CIA’s rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.

In addition, Steven Emerson of The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) provided the following comments on this subject on the January 11 FOX News television program “Hannity and Colmes”. The following provides Mr. Emerson’s televised comments on this subject on the FOX News television program (despite numerous efforts by Alan Colmes to interrupt him).

Sean Hannity:
“An Islamic expert at the Pentagon known for his hard stance against radical Islam was recently fired, and now his colleagues want to know why. Stephen Coughlin was fired after a confrontation with one of the Deputy Defense Secretary’s aides, which ended with Coughlin being called ‘a Christian zealot with a pen’. The word from the Pentagon is that Coughlin was fired for fiscal reasons, but supporters of his think there are ulterior motives behind his dismissal.”

Steven Emerson:
“Stephen Coughlin has a background in law and international business and specialty in academic study of Islamic militant doctrine of Jihad. And what he did is to analyze documents, hundred of thousands of documents, which were released during the Hamas, the Holy Land case trial, in Texas. He did an analysis of some of those documents — that were not disputed — which showed that there was a Muslim Brotherhood plan, a secret plan, designed to acquire influence in the U.S., undermine U.S. democracy, and to establish a caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood plan was spelled out in a document that was introduced at trial. Mr. Coughlin wrote a memo spelling out the implications of these documents, and the profound nature of what would happen if the United States government decided to start doing dialogue and embracing the very organizations that were intent on undermining national security.”

Sean Hannity:
“Was there a point, and this is a point of contention - I know Bill Gertz brought it up in the piece that he put together on this, that he was asked soften his views on Islamic extremism. In other words, they are saying it is about fiscal reasons…”

Steven Emerson:
“That’s a cover. The J2, which is intelligence, said he was an… I can tell you this openly right now - the J2, which is the intelligence wing of the Joint Chiefs, said that he was a political embarrassment. And the reason was because he had offended a top aide to Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, whose aide Hasham Islam, I believe is an Islamist with a pro-Muslim Brotherhood bent, who has brought in groups to the Pentagon who have been unindicted co-conspirators.”

Sean Hannity:
“Let me get the broader picture here. So you believe that this guy is a foremost expert on the issue on the Islamic extremism, in the United States, and because he wouldn’t soften his views, change his opinions or his rhetoric, he is being fired because they are people that are sympathetic — you are making the case — to radical Islam within our own government? Am I understanding that right?”

Steven Emerson:
“Radical Islam… Global civilizational Jihad — that’s a quote from a document released during the trial — has emerged under the guise of different organizations that have penetrated the U.S. government. People don’t want to believe it, but it’s true. And even when these groups claim they are anti-terrorism, they’re not. They have an agenda, they’re subversive… let me just finish… And the fact is that he didn’t have a hard line… all he did was spell out what the agenda was of these groups, and this particular quote… (cut off)

Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “I gotta do… we only have a moment left.. We have a FOX News producer at the Pentagon who is reporting that… uh, we have spoken with people in the Pentagon who are claiming that the Defense Intelligence Agency… they employed Coughlin through a contract and there was Rear Admiral David Dorset, director of intelligence for the Joint Staff, who decided not to renew his contract for fiscal purposes, and it had nothing to do whatsoever with Islam - the person you are fingering as being responsible for his dismissal.”

Steven Emerson:
“You know, they want to have a cover story - that’s the cover story. The reality is a lot different. He was called a Christian extremist, a zealot. He had offended Hasham Islam. He may have offended Gordon England, who has appeared before radical Islamic groups, such as the Islamic Society of North America - we have videotape of this…”

(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “That may be true, but that is not why he was fired… So you are saying that we are being lied to by the Pentagon?”

“This is a cover story. The reality is that his contract was not renewed because of the Islamic penetration of the Pentagon. And that’s a sad reality that has affected also the DHS, the FBI, the Department of… (interrupted)”.

(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “When you say Islamic penetration, are you just talking about one person or are you saying there is widespread penetration of people who want Jihad against the United States working, literally working in the Pentagon?”

Steven Emerson:
“I’d say yes. I am telling you… we know that from the trials of former military members who were brought up on charges of carrying out Jihad. So we know that they trained in the military, number one. Number two, the chaplains who served, the Islamic chaplains who served, were trained by a known terrorist.”

Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “And they want to destroy the United States? These people working internally… like a 5th column in there?”

Steven Emerson:
“You got it. In fact, there was an operation in the late 1980s, called Trojan Horse, by the FBI…”

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2007 – If Hesham Islam’s life story was translated into a screenplay — and it’s got all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster — the director would be hard-pressed to come up with a more compelling chain of events landing him as a top advisor to the deputy defense secretary.

The movie would open with Islam as a young boy growing up in Cairo, Egypt, huddling in terror as Israeli bombs came raining down, demolishing much of the building around him and his family.

Next would be the scene of the teenager who moves to Iraq when his Egyptian naval officer father is transferred to help establish the Arabian Gulf naval academy Islam would later attend.

The camera would then close in on a young merchant mariner adrift for three days in the Arabian Sea after an Iranian torpedo sunk his 16,000-ton cargo ship, drowning all but Islam and four of his crewmates.

Next viewers would see the young man, who after corresponding with an American pen-pal for more than three years, dares ask for the photograph that leaves him smitten with his future wife.

The action would shift to the United States, where the new husband, desperate to provide for his family, enlists in the Navy. Later he will be accepted into Officer Candidate School, then ultimately retire 20 years later as a Navy commander.

Today, Islam is drawing on those vast experiences to advise Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England on international affairs.

Although Islam’s life lends itself to high-drama scenes typically seen on the big screen, England sees him more as a behind-the-scenes player with a special talent for bringing other actors together.

Before retiring from the Navy, Islam contributed this skill and his regional and language expertise on the staff of then-Navy Secretary England. Much of Islam’s work focused on U.S. military engagement with the Middle East.

As England moved to the No. 2 Pentagon position, Islam followed, broadening his purview to “the whole globe.”

“He’s my interlocutor,” England said. “He represents me to the international community. He assists me in my own outreach efforts, and he’s extraordinarily good at it.”

Islam is rarely at his Pentagon desk, believing the best way to serve as England’s “man out in town in Washington, D.C.” is to be out and about, building relationships.

“I am a strong believer that there are no relationships between countries,” he said. “Relationships are between people, and those relationships are what bring countries together.”

“It is all about friendships between people,” agreed England, “and you build them one person at a time.”

England calls relationship building “a contact sport.” “You can’t develop friendships unless you actually go out and take the effort to meet people and interact with people,” he said.

As he represents the Defense Department around the country and the around the world, England said, he counts on Islam’s insights and advice. “Hesham helps me understand people’s different perspectives and how they see things,” England said. “He has a cultural background that’s very helpful, but he also works at it very hard to get a better understanding of people and how they think.”

Islam works tirelessly to befriend diplomats from around the world, learning from each about their country, its sensitivities, and its requirements. “I help them understand us, as Americans, and help my boss understand them,” he said. “My goal is to bridge the gap and help people understand each other, even if we are different.”

Not all Islam’s efforts are directed toward other countries. A Muslim, Islam works closely with the Muslim-American community, encouraging its members to integrate into American society and take an active stand with the United States in the war on violent extremism. “This war can’t be won by just Americans,” he said. “It’s a war that has to be fought by Muslims. Islam has been hijacked, and it is time to take it back.”

Islam said he’s proud of the 5,000 Muslims actively supporting that effort in the U.S. military. Among them is his own son, Navy Lt. j.g. Rami Islam, who serves aboard the carrier USS Carl Vinson. “As a parent, I’m very proud that my son is serving this country,” he said.

After growing up in wartime, first in Egypt, then in Iraq, Islam hopes this dialogue can help eliminate differences that can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. “If people talk, people don’t fight. If they talk, they don’t argue,” he said. “I try to bring talking and understanding into the dialogue.”

“Hesham has wonderful friendships and relationships, and therefore he can give me extraordinarily good advice in dealing with countries and people,” England said. “I take his advice, and I listen to him all the time.”

England said he rarely disagrees with Islam’s guidance. “After all,” he said, “if you have a good doctor, you listen to your doctor, right?”

Hesham Islam is responsible, according to earlier reports, for the firing of Stephen Coughlin, the Pentagon’s only expert on Islamic law. But now the questions about Islam himself, and what his intentions really are, are increasing.

The Pentagon is looking into conflicting statements about the background of Hesham Islam, a special assistant to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England who was the focus of a dispute with a Joint Staff counterterrorism analyst.
Mr. Islam faced tough questions about his background posed by veteran journalist Claudia Rosett, a former Wall Street Journal reporter who covered the United Nations oil-for-food scandal with Iraq. Last week, Miss Rosett took the Pentagon to task by uncovering serious discrepancies about the Egyptian-born Islam that no one at the Pentagon seems willing to answer.

Writing in National Review Online, Miss Rosett revealed that certain claims about Mr. Islam’s background don’t fit.

Shortly after she wrote about the discrepancies contained in a Pentagon-written article on Mr. Islam’s background, the Pentagon removed the biography from its Web site, DefenseLink.mil.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said “that piece was taken down in an attempt to reduce the rhetoric and the emotion surrounding this issue while we try to determine the facts.”

The Pentagon does not comment on such personnel matters, he noted. “That said, we are looking into the matter and trying to reconcile conflicting statements.”

Mr. Morrell called later to clarify that the conflicting statements being probed relate to whether or not Mr. Islam used the term “Christian zealot with a pen” in describing Mr. Coughlin, and not about discrepancies in Mr. Islam’s background.

Mr. Islam has come under fire from supporters of Stephen Coughlin, the Joint Staff analyst on counterterrorism whose contract was not renewed. The action followed a meeting between Mr. Coughlin and Mr. Islam several weeks ago when the two clashed over Mr. Coughlin’s views on the Islamic law roots of terrorism.

After refusing comment to Inside the Ring, Kevin Wensing, a spokesman for Mr. Islam, now says that reports in this space that Mr. Islam called Mr. Coughlin a “Christian zealot with a pen” did not take place during the meeting.

Queries to other Pentagon officials familiar with the issue said the phrase was used by Mr. Islam after the meeting, not during it.

No action was taken against Mr. Islam, a Muslim adviser and confidant of Mr. England, for the anti-Christian comments.

Mr. Islam could not be reached for comment.

Miss Rosett tried — and failed — to get straight answers from Mr. Wensing about why Mr. Islam claimed that when he was 7 his family was bombed by Israeli jets at his home in Cairo, when there is no evidence the Israelis bombed the Egyptian capital during the 1967 war.

Also, Mr. Wensing could not explain why Mr. Islam said in his biography that he was on a freighter sunk by an Iranian torpedo in the Persian Gulf when there is no record of the ship being sunk.

According to his 1992 master’s thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School, Mr. Islam is highly critical of Israel and the influence of American Jews on U.S. politics, noting that U.S. ties to Israel have harmed relations to other states in the Middle East.

One Pentagon official suggested that any security concerns about Mr. Islam are misguided, noting that someone in his position would have to face a background check.
