Poll: 30% Of Conservatives Won’t Vote For McCain
WASHINGTON - Talk about cold comfort.
Mitt Romney, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race on Thursday, won a straw poll of conservative activists on Saturday, edging out likely nominee John McCain.
Ballots for the straw poll conducted at the Conservatives Political Action Conference were collected Thursday morning through Friday afternoon. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, quit the race in a midday speech to the conference on Thursday.
In the straw poll vote, Romney got 35 percent and McCain 34 percent. Mike Huckabee and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas tied with 12 percent.
Romney won the straw poll at the conference last year.
On another question, two-thirds said they would vote for McCain if he’s the eventual nominee, two in 10 said they would vote for someone else and about one in 10 said they would not vote.

This sucks! if we dont either find someone or unite behind McCain this election is going to the Democrats. Thanks alot for “suspending” your campaign Romney
February 9th, 2008 at 3:57 pmYes, indeed . . .

Thanks to Jay for posting this site.
February 9th, 2008 at 3:57 pmThink we can get a petition going to get Romney back? I mean do you seriously think it might work?
February 9th, 2008 at 3:58 pmWell this is going to be another year where we have 2 “bad” candidates.
Conservatives have to vote for McCain I mean no one should look at Obama/Clinton and say “Yeah they are better then McCain”
Lesser of two evils.
Sorry.
February 9th, 2008 at 3:58 pmGROM - Conservatives don’t have to vote for McCain . . . and they are not going to.
Those Republicans who said before they ran Romney out of the campaign that McCain was the “most electable” were wrong. The media and the Democrats wanted the gullible Republicans to think that because they knew that he was the most beatable. They knew that conservatives would never back him. The media and the Democrats got what they wanted - and unelectable McCain - Republicans are stupid.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:12 pmJust make sure you vote for Republicans to the Congress this November!
I also think it’s premature to ask who people will vote for this November without knowing who each candidate chooses for the Vice-President spot. A strong person here will make a world of difference, though I don’t know for the life of me who that person should be for any of the candidates.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:13 pmi really can’t believe that when it comes to nov. that any cons.. or real americans will vote for a dummyrat.. i only pray that whomever is on the right side of the ballot wins..for the good of our military..
February 9th, 2008 at 4:16 pmhttp://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/
WOW!!!!!!! McCain a communist puppet?
What a revelation.
…and his arms are too short! He does look like a retarded!
February 9th, 2008 at 4:17 pmI’m voting for Joe Arpaio unless something happens to change my mind….like McCain does a 180 on the illegal alien issue and swears he’ll quit ‘crossing the isle’. There is nothing but evil on THAT side of the isle.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:22 pmCathyH
Just make sure you vote for Republicans to the Congress this November!
———————————————————-
THIS is a VERY important point. And NO RINOs!
February 9th, 2008 at 4:29 pmI would guess that by the time November rolls around the conservatives base will back in the Republican corner.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:31 pmGOOD. Ron Paul is a true conservative, Mitt Romney somewhat.
McCain is a joke and doesn’t deserve support from true conservative voters.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:36 pmWell… Simply put, I would rather have Hillary or Obama to blame for the country’s self implosion & bankruptcy status and win both the House & the Senate by storm in 2010 rather than have McCain the lone liberal Cowboy for Pres.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:53 pmCONSERVATISM IS NOT A SUICIDE PACT. MCCAIN MY NOT BE PERFECT BUT THE REPUBLIC DOES NOT NEED TO BE STRESSED BY THE ELECTION OF BILLARY OR THE MAGIC NEGRO.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:54 pmid take mccain over huckabee
February 9th, 2008 at 4:58 pmI can handle voting for McCain. just wondering what will happen in November. The thought of either of those assholes on the left getting elected President is scary.
February 9th, 2008 at 4:58 pmI have to say I am still very uncomfortable with McCain.
As the vietnam veterans indicated on their site where they provide a great deal of information: The Lesser of Two “Evils” is Still “Evil”
This has been very much on my mind. As we all know - what political figures say to get elected are not a guarantee of what they will actually do once in office.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:02 pm“Paul” a contributor to http://powerlineblog.com/ wrote something quite interesting, I thought, and I’m going to take the chance and share it here:
“A gulity pleasure diminished”
” [I enjoy listening to Ann Coulter, partly because I usually agree with 80 to 90 percent of what she says and partly because of the guilty pleasure I get from much of the other 10 to 20 percent. However, watching the replay of her speech explaining to the Young America’s Foundation why Hillary Clinton is preferable to John McCain, I found that those percentages were reversed. Moreover, though I did take guilty pleasure from her attacks on McCain, it became increasingly difficult fully to enjoy the spectacle of Coulter attempting to persuade college-age conservatives that a McCain defeat at the hands of Clinton would be just fine.
Fortunately, judging by the questions, at least some of the college-age conservatives were skeptical. Indeed, Coulter seemed to be backing off by the end of the Q and A session — even to the point of allowing for the possibility of being persuaded to prefer McCain — as it became increasingly evident that her position is untenable.
For example, in response to a question about Iraq, Coulter responded that McCain wants to close Gitmo and end waterboarding. But Clinton wants to close Gitmo, end waterboarding and, more likely than not, get out of Iraq without having won. McCain wants to close Gitmo, end waterboarding, and win in Iraq. How is that even a close call for Coulter?
Similarly, when asked about judges Coulter reminded the audience that McCain was part of the Gang of 14, and added that there was no assurance McCain would appoint judges like John Roberts (whose nomination Coulter was no fan of at the time) and Samuel Alito. But McCain voted in favor of Roberts and Alito, and (though I disagree with the Gang of 14) supported restricting filibusters of Bush nominees to exceptional cases. Clinton voted against Roberts and Alito, and thought there should be no restrictions on filibusters of their nominations and the nominations of like-minded appellate court judges. Again, this seems like a no-brainer for conservatives.
I also noticed that Coulter frequently praised Mitt Romney yesterday. But, if I recall correctly, when she spoke at the National Journalism Center last fall, Coulter found little to like in any member of the Republican field. It’s understandable that Romney looks better to her now that McCain has moved to the forefront. McCain may likewise look better to her if Clinton or Obama is elected. ]”
February 9th, 2008 at 5:02 pmMcCain can not beat the Democrats.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:03 pmI am sorry to say this to anyone who believe it…but if you think the veterans site against john mccain is anything close to legitimate then you might want to consider if you are related to Paultards and 9/11 conspiracy theorists.
The site presents their “facts” in a very distorted fashion. A majority of the articles are written by independent people who cite no sources of their information. The website itself does not cite any sources or where and how they obtained their documents. They even have a disclaimer that the site is no responsible for any information that may not be true.
I could go line by line how the website is wrong but it would take up to much time. But the big ones are there are no documents that show that any help mccain provided led to him getting better treatment. The only reliable video on the site (the one with c-span) was cut. Why not show the entire tape? The satellite photo at the bottom can not be found anywhere else. Every other website that shows that photo cites the article where it was first written which of course does no cite where the photo came from.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:10 pmI’d take mccain over the dems. lesser of two evils. I don’t think romney would come back. everyone gave him too much shit.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:11 pmFrom that fucked up web site.
[[The Military Code of Conduct is the definitive code specifying the responsibility of American Military Personnel while in combat or captivity.]]
Read it and it seems lke McCain kept each one of the orders. Seems like a bunch bull shit to me.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:16 pmGERMAN… AND PROUD OF IT
Hey, I just read that your pussy coward military is stil ltoo fucking wimpy to go to south A’stan. Seems like theres not too much to be proud of in Hitler land these days.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:18 pmMike Huckabee will be the next President of the United States.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:23 pm@ Joe
“I am sorry to say this to anyone who believe it…but if you think the veterans site against john mccain is anything close to legitimate then you might want to consider if you are related to Paultards and 9/11 conspiracy theorists.”
Hey Joe, I don’t think anyone here endorced the veteran’s site - some thoughts about it were given. The McCain issues are serious ones.
So, a big Fook You at ya with your insult.
My biggest problem with McCain is his wanting to give terrorists rights, close gitmo, etc. Giving terrorist fooks rights is a big problem from where I see things.
I have never given Ron Paul a single thought - he is a joke. I have never been a 911 conspiracy theorist either.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:26 pmHUCK 4 President!!
&
CHUCK Norris as his VP.
=========================
I love your country guys, don’t vote for weirdos…
February 9th, 2008 at 5:30 pmStaying home to “show the GOP” a thing or two is flawed and retarded. That is what got us the 2006 elections…thank you very much ding-dongs.
Staying home to not vote, is a vote for Hillary or Obama and if people can look at themselves in the mirror over that one, I pity those.
There are MANY running for CONgress trying to evict and replace the dhimmis and RINOs up for re-election. DO SOMETHING and get behind AND SUPPORT these people, regardless of the Presidential Aspirant.
The battlefield is in CONgress. When we place conservatives back into the Lower House, we can then keep the President in check and begin to work on the House.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:31 pm1) I hope General Petraeus starts setting the stage for an orderly withdrawal from Iraq before Bush’s term is up because if Conservatives don’t get behind McCain then Iraq will be lost to anarchy - if not al Qaeda in Iraq itself.
2) Hopefully Dems keep perspective about Afghanistan and choose not to withdrawal because its going to get a lot rougher there if we lose in Iraq. We can’t lose in both places.
3) At this point, its still way early, but Democrats will probably pick up 4-5 senate seats in 2008, if you look at the races objectively.
I’m looking at this from a purely foreign policy perspective.
February 9th, 2008 at 5:39 pm“McCain can not beat the Democrats”
Hes spanking the bitch in recent polling. Huck on the other hand is double digits down against her.
February 9th, 2008 at 6:02 pmI don’t think Huck has a Chinamans chance of beating BHO or Shillery. I don’t like McCain but I do think he has broader appeal and chance of winning.
February 9th, 2008 at 6:15 pmI did my best to get Romney the nod. I am no fan of McCain’s big adventure of reaching across the isle (leaping across would probably be more accurate). I detest the condescending blue bloods of the Republican party that are pumping money into McCain’s campaign while talking down to their fellow Republicans that pulled for a rival candidate.
That said, I will vote for McCain. There are some good folks that post here that have been pulling for McCain from the get-go. Based on McCain’s voting record IMO he wasn’t the best Republican nominee; however, I do owe my fellow commenters here that are McCaniacs my support over the dem nominee. Now that it is apparent McCain is getting the nod, I’m not about to let my fellow McCaniac Dollardheads down by sitting at home on election day whining because my guy didn’t get the nod. Congratulations McCainiacs.
February 9th, 2008 at 6:25 pmdeathstar is making lots of schnitzel tonight … LMFAO!!!
TOO BAD THERE’S NO BEER EMO!!!
February 9th, 2008 at 6:29 pmWell said PhilNBlanx. McCain was not my first choice, but I will be happy to punch the ticket for a pro-life, pro-military guy who will fight and win the war on terror.
February 9th, 2008 at 6:29 pm“schnitzel”
Schnitzel sucks, ever had sour kraut? Its even fucking worse.
February 9th, 2008 at 6:35 pmRegarding the Vietnam Vets Against McCain website: I find it very interesting how McCain was a big part of shutting down the POW search/investigation and closing off the records - If I were still looking for my loved one, I would be pissed. It just seems suspicious. With his record of voting for self-interest causes and not for the good of his constiuents or the party or sometimes even the country, I would think that suspicions would add to further questioning. It seems logical.
There are those on here who support McCain, without question - only a handful. You have that right. You should think twice about insulting those who question him though — we have a right to question him. We have the right to not trust him. We have the right to not vote for him, if we decide to do that. The fact that so many have to “hold their nose” to vote for the man should tell you that something is not quite right with the picture of your hero, John McCain.
I stand by previous my statement - McCain can not beat the Democrats - either one. Polls lie. It was a mistake putting him up as the Republican candidate.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:03 pmObama must be blocked! he’s an open door to Islam!.
if a vote for Hillary with a Republican Congress this November / make a tactical vote.
God Help us all.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:04 pmRomney did not drop out, he suspended. Honest conservatives who haven’t voted in a primary can and should vote for the candidate they prefer, not the one AP,NBC,CBS,CNN et al says will win.
When McRINO arrives at the convention without a sufficent number of delegates to cinch the nomination the brokering will begin and maybe, just maybe McCain will retire, for the good of the party and the nation. Otherwise, it’s lock and load, cause the Magic Negro will be sending Marines to Kenya, supporting the Muslims of Odinga.
Complaints regarding political incorrectness should be deposited where they can be flushed.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:09 pmMcCain, Hitlery or Hussein………and the difference is?
McCain tries to appear as Ol’ Glory, deserving of the utmost respect.
The problem is that, like Ol’ Glory, he turns which ever way the wind blows.
The choice this November is going to be between two Dummycrats.
I’ll do write in come November.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:21 pm[[We have the right to not trust him. We have the right to not vote for him, if we decide to do that. The fact that so many have to “hold their nose” to vote for the man should tell you that something is not quite right with the picture of your hero, John McCain.]]
You do have that right TexasMom. I pray however that good people do hand our nation over to Obama or Hillary because they act as suicide voters or decide to sit it out. Those two will stab our military in the back, push forward the pro-abortion agenda and load up the supreme court with liberal judges. McCain, despite his many flaws, will not.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:23 pmdeathstar - You make a good point . . . and there is our dilemma . . . It sucks. I am pissed off to have to be in this position - I find the Republican Party to be worthless. I find McCain to be ridiculous. I find the entire election to be a farce. I find our future to be in question.
February 9th, 2008 at 7:46 pmThis is what you you war-mongering neo-cons get for not supporting Ron Paul.
Have a happy defeat.
February 10th, 2008 at 1:16 amTexas Tarian said:

_______
Screw you TT, Ron Paul has done nothing but undermine our troops overseas from his fairytale perch about this war. He’s also done nothing but undermine the party he allegedly belongs to. Right off the bat, you know there’s something wrong with a guy whose followers are all like cult members.
Go Huckabee. Or Arpaio.
February 10th, 2008 at 1:42 amConservatives are beginning to amaze me in their inability to see what’s really at stake here. This election is about more than McCain and his inability to follow conservative principals.
How is handing the whole country over to far left liberals a suitable alternative to McCain?
There is a serious difference between McCain and a purebread liberal who is bent on destroying ALL conservative values permanantly.
Today’s liberal is not like the Bill Clinton’s Presidency. It’s moved radically left… Clinton is now considered a moderated, and loosing it’s power because it’s not radically liberal enough.
The Democratic candidate that is surging now, Obama, is bottom of the barrel liberal. He is about to take power, unless conservatives stop fighting and get serious.
This would give liberals what they will treat as a clear sign from America that is it ready to move sharply to the left. Not slightly to the left.
Cherry picking our candidate is exactly what got us INTO this mess, and if conservatives aren’t careful, they will allow our country spiral out of control.
There is no such thing as a quick recovery from 4 years of radical liberalism unchecked. We may be facing what will take years and years of damage to undo. What’s more, there’s no guarantee that it WILL be undone. Have conservatives completely forgotten Roe v. Wade and other extremely important issues?
Questioning McCain was right and highly useful for a time and a season. Many of us wish we had acted sooner to support Romney or Huck…. But staying home on election day allows liberals a pass to capture all THREE branches of Government. Our kids deserve better out of us.
I’m not asking anyone to sacrifice their own belief or convictions, but we have a serious problem here that requires that we do everything we can to minimize the damage this election can cause to our society.
I’d rather have 50% of McCains ear, than 0% of a liberals ear.
Give it some thought, friends.
