PARIS - President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged Friday to send thousands of extra police and more than $700 million in aid to neglected, heavily immigrant neighborhoods that exploded in riots in 2005 and 2006.

Sarkozy unveiled the much-awaited plan for reinvigorating isolated suburban housing projects and better integrating their youth into French society. The conservative president stressed the importance of new security measures, and declared a “war without mercy” against drug traffickers in such neighborhoods.

“We will put an end to the law of gangs, the law of silence, the law of trafficking,” he said, by installing new “intervention teams” mobilized day and night against an underground economy “poisoning the lives of the neighborhoods.”

Sarkozy also announced plans to bus students to schools in different neighborhoods to better mix social classes—and races—a subject often taboo in France.

“Together we will build a France proud of its diversity,” he said, adding that young people should not have a hard time getting work because of the color of their skin.

The riots in 2005, a three-week explosion of car burnings and other violence in projects nationwide, woke up the country to the seething anger among youths over discrimination, joblessness and alienation. Many of the rioters were Arab or black, French-born children or grandchildren of immigrants from France’s former colonies.

Sarkozy, as interior minister before his election as president last year, angered many people in the housing projects by calling youth delinquents “scum” and through his crackdowns on immigration.

But during his election campaign, he pledged a “Marshall Plan” for France’s suburbs, and assigned Urban Affairs Minister Fadela Amara to come up with a vast project for fixing their woes.

She announced outlines of it Jan. 22, but Sarkozy said he wanted a say, and the plan released Friday appeared to have several new measures.

The gilded halls of the presidential palace were packed for the announcement with guests from the neighborhoods the plan is aimed at, including young people, local officials and people from neighborhood associations.

Sarkozy noted that past government plans have failed to overcome the ills of housing projects, and vowed that this plan would break the pattern.

“integrating their youth into French society”

    >> I do not think the muslims have any desire to integrate, foolish idealism that is being proved wrong around the world

  2. Kurt(the infidel)

This is just wishful thinking. you have to give Sarkozy credit for trying but muslims wont assimilate. They expect everyone around them to give in to their culture even when in a foreign land.

  3. bill-tb

Heavy on the cops, forget the rest. Muslims don’t want to integrate, they want to take over.

  4. Firebad

It’s actually pretty brilliant, kids are gonna be kids, they wanna be seen as the normal or cool by there peers, they are gonna want to fit in, by bussing them over to other schools with less immigrants is a pretty good idea

Gotta start from the roots and grow you can’t just change a generations mind over night, it took us almost a 100 from when slavery was abolished to when blacks were given equal rights in the south.

On the other side of the coin, i could easily see a rise in those honour killings as kids get murdered for wanting to fit in.

Love the more cops part of the plan. I have to agree with everyone else. Muslims aren’t interested in assimilation. They want supremacy. Idealistic on the Sarkman’s part. But he’s the boss, so I give him credit for trying.

He has to start somewhere, especially if he needs the cover for later for more harsh actions to change the situation.

would be great if that is the case

    Sarko -

I wish you all the luck and success G-d can send your way …

But if your plan fails … Nuke the bastards.

A head-cracking surge is all they understand. You have to smack them between the eyes with a 2×4 just to get their attention. We’re about to have a surge here in Philadelphia. New mayor and new police chief. My only concern is will the unintended result be not unlike what Rudy experienced in NYC. They surged Manhattan, but that just pushed it out into Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens.

Using the classic Carrot or the stick ploy. Stick(cops) will break up the current problem into managable pieces. while the Carrot(schools and such) will mix up the kids, like Firebad said they will see something different. While he probably won’t get them all the change, but he will get some. From there they have to choose. Those who don’t like carrots will but kept under stick-rule.

As someone who’s seen the consequences of busing, I have two words:

    BAD IDEA!

It won’t improve the little pieces of shit in the least. Instead, you’ll destroy the French kids chance of a decent education, or whatever passes for it over there. Half the French kids will emulate the jihadi-wannabes, and the other half will meekly hand over their lunch money everyday.

Teachers will spend more time trying to restore order than actually teaching. French girls will learn the muslim version of a ‘pass around’, and to run at the sight of a gang of ‘youths of indeterminate ethnic extraction’ coming down the hall.

The few who do start to assimilate will be accused of apostacy, and get the shit kicked out of them. Any muslim girls who date French boys will be lucky if all they get is a beating.

I’ve seen this happen before. It never ends well.

Take a bunch of former cops and soldiers, give them teaching degrees, and open some sex-segregated (that is very important) schools in the muslim neighborhoods. Before anything else, make sure they learn French. Then, teach them civics (the pre-60’s kind) along with everything else. Cut off further immigration.

Deport or incarcerate the jihadis. Monitor the mosques. Then, after a few generations, they might, MIGHT, assimilate.

  12. Ranger

Good move, all around. Sure, they may not assimilate and it could be a waste. But I bet not. It’s different when you start with kids, although Islam does make it a bit more difficult.

  13. JewishOdysseus

Gotta agree w/TTB, busing only manages to corrupt the normal, not normalize the corrupted.

If only the headline had been as follows:
    “Sarkozy To Flood Muslim Slums”

    period.
