February 20th, 2008 at 8:50 amMeteorite …
Doesn’t have to make “impact”.
The one in Russia’s Tunguska never made impact.
It’s also amazing how many people believe the two A-bombs we used on Japan actually made impact on their Ground Zeroes … When, infact, a wider area of damage is guaranteed when there isn’t ground impact, but in-air detonation.
Obviously, the meteorite in this case was quite small, and exploded into harmless light and shock wave as it was reduced to hot dust.
The “suspected” space rock over Tunguska was obviously much larger, and it’s mineral/elemental components were of a different nature, which leads to speculation it wasn’t a simple meteor, but a small asteroid or a chunk of comet.
As a kid I lived in a generally rural area with an unobstructed view of the night sky. Saw several meteorite explosions and falling fireballs back then. Oddly, a certain percentage of the ones I witnessed were during the dusk hours …
When I was in high school I would hear of meteor shower events for certain nights during certain times of the year. I’d drag my poor six years younger little sister out with blankets onto our lawn chairs and make her watch the middle of the night sky with me. Most times she just fell asleep out there and missed the show …

February 20th, 2008 at 9:08 amBTW -
A few years ago I read an independent study of the Great Chicago Fire …
Did you know that same night there was a swath of horrific fires (and forest fires) across the upper mid-west? Documentation of deaths and destruction, a whole town wiped out, the people fleeing into the water tributaries to try to save themselves … And that same night there was a huge meteor shower …
The guy that gathered the historical information and drew up the study speculates the Chicago fire may have been started by one of these fiery meteors falling in a fuel rich area of the city and sparking the ensuing inferno.
I found it a neat theory …
February 20th, 2008 at 9:15 amcome on guys we all know its a top-secret govt experiment that went wrong. lol
February 20th, 2008 at 9:40 amIt seems they are “plasma” balls
ball of fire (in french -> google translate)

I knew about the kind of fire balls through the cartoon “Tintin and the 7 chrystal balls”
I had once the experience of one during a thunder, it run around the bed early in morning, the noise wake me up, I had just the time to watch it in a quick glance, not enough time to get feared
