I could not believe what I was reading. Some left wing liberal pukey shmuck blogger at the Daily kos is doubting the idea that women in Islamic culture are oppressed.
I simply can’t fucking believe these little mealy-mouth faggots over at That Piece of Shit blog.
I’ll just let them speak for themselves:
In the United States, there’s now an almost universally held belief that most women in Islamic societies face wretched persecution and that Islam itself is wholly to blame. But there’s scant empirical evidence to support the claim — mostly, we’re treated to detailed reports of horrific abuses in theocratic states like Saudi Arabia and Iran, despite the fact that just six percent of the Muslim world live in those two countries. If you ask average Americans how they came to their beliefs about how badly women suffer in Islamic societies, most will reply that “everyone knows it.”
But I’ve seen no empirical data to suggest that an Islamic majority itself correlates with the subordination of women better than other co-variables like economic development, women’s ability to serve in government, a political culture that values the rule of law or access to higher education. In other words, you can use a comparison of women’s status in Saudi Arabia and Sweden to make an intellectually weak argument for Western superiority, but there’s little support for the notion that women living in “traditional” Islamic cultures enjoy a lower social status than those in orthodox Christian, Jewish or Hindu communities, to name a few examples.

How about the fact that they cant be seen in public with a man unless it is her husband or a family member.
How about the fact that if a woman is raped she needs to something like 5 witnesses in order to prove it.
Or how about how women cant drive in cities or populated areas. and cant wear any type of clothing that reveals skin.
or maybe how a woman can be buried up to her head and stoned to death for “bringing shame” to her family. what a loose translation that could be. It could be for whatever the “man” of the family chooses it to be.
Im not someone who is very concerned with the feminist movement or any such thing. But i do believe women should be respected the same as anyone else on earth, not put lower on the totum pole than a dog.

The reason they don’t want to acknowledge the oppression is because they would have to admit someone has to deal with it. Since it isn’t politically expedient for them to do so now they have to minimize it. Believe you me if it helped them politically they would be banging the drums louder than anyone.

Liberals need to believe that Bush and Republicans are the enemy. They need to believe Islam is a mirror of some third world Marxist crap they learned in college about class struggle. They need to believe this because the alternative is that we are up against a death cult founded by a warlord from the 8th century whose favorite wife among many was like five years old when he married her. In contemporary terms, a pedophile. A deathcult that seeks to implement the rules and lifestyle of that warlord and his time onto the 21st century. A warlord whose “laws” included the killing and/or subjugation of Jews, gays, Christians and any other “Other” in their midst.
I read that as many as 30 percent of the women in prison in Pakistan are there for the “crime” of being raped. Since the Prophet decided that in a case of rape, there must be four (or five, I forget) MALE witnesses to the encounter in order for a rape to be proven, and as most rape victims do not have that many witnesses, then it is determined by the Islamic laws of Pakistan that then she therefore solicited the encounter. Thus she is a seductress and this is a crime. She gets sent to prison. How very Gloria Steinem.
Liberals look at Muslim societies and they see generally darker skinned people (Oppressed for race!) and an exotic culture and religion (I’m so multi-cultural! I love ethnic food and I bought my girlfriend this Peruvian handbag this weekend!) and conclude that if they’re trying to kill Americans it must be because Mother Nature is using them to wake us up to Global Warming. Not that they are a centuries old global version of the Ku Klux Klan, albeit with more melanin. A cursory read of history from Spain to the Taj Mahal might lead one to be a but more curious about Islam than this blogger but damn those history torpedoes, full delusion ahead!!
