Pakistan: 80 Year-Old Man Arrested For Blasphemy
As I read this story, it reminded me of the Salem Witch Trial kind of stuff.
Of course, these are the same people who will just throw acid on a girl if she refuses or kill her if she shames.
Kabeer wala– Police in Kabeer wala arrest the old believer, charging him with ripping and throwing pages of the Qur‘an on the ground.
His name is Altaf Husain and he is an 80-year-old man. He was arrested by police in Kabeer wala for desecrating the Qur‘an, a crime which is punishable with life in prison according to the Pakistan Criminal Code.
The elderly man belongs to the Ahmadiyya, a Muslim religious movement condemned as heretical in 1974. With perhaps as many as 3 million followers, especially in Punjab, the Ahmadi community has suffered from harassment and persecution.
According to police, a student saw Altaf Husain rip pages out of a Qur‘an last Monday and throw them on the ground. When he shouted at him to stop, the old Ahmadi ran off.
Conversely, members of the Ahmadi community said that Altaf Husain was just reading the power meter outside his home when a madrassa student warned him that he was stepping on a page of the Qur‘an. The 80-year-old man failed to understand what the boy was saying when the latter began shouting, accusing him of blasphemy. Police arrived soon after and arrested the alleged offender.
The spokesman for the Ahmadiyya community, Saleem Ud-Din, told AsiaNews that the charges are baseless, that they are just a way to persecute Ahmadis.
For Ud-Din no one in the community could desecrate the holy text. What the community wants instead is for the government to put a stop to such incidents which are sowing hatred against the Ahmadi community.

Aren’t those Hindu’s?
March 6th, 2008 at 3:50 pmwhy is that a crime?
March 6th, 2008 at 6:31 pmPoor Altaf….this one’ll cost him his head.
March 6th, 2008 at 6:34 pmAnd muslims accuse us of idolatry: you get life imprisonment for damaging a book! perhaps if you worshiped God instead of a book and the man who recited it, people might take you more seriously?
March 6th, 2008 at 8:46 pmTJ(the kafir) I’ve often seen islam as a headless “religion”. The fundamentalist has lost his mind, and the moderate runs the daily risk of losing his head. More than that though is the apparent lack of hierarchical governance. No “pope” (caliphate?) or anglican style rule, where imams would function like bishops.
March 6th, 2008 at 9:56 pmYo mindy, my point was that the article is about Islam and the girls pictured are Hindi. It is none the less horrific regardless what faith they belong to. In India when a man approaches a woman to court her and she rejects his offer sometimes the men retaliate and throw acid on them in revenge, another example of a society that has low regard for women.
March 6th, 2008 at 11:04 pmI think, you think, I’m prejudiced because you misunderstood a remark I made in a post I made way back on this site. I can assure you that there is not a prejudiced bone in this bone head of mine. M
