Surprise! Rap Concert In Texas Turns Into Giant Brawl
Notice the name of the concert: “Spring Break Party Beach Bash”…heh heh…my name has always had a dual-use policy. Bash as in “An uproarious party” and also Bash as in “A vigorous blow”…looks like the former was the intent but the latter ended up being the reality.
Anybody ever been to Galveston? Just curious as to what it’s like there.
GALVESTON — An outdoor rap concert ended in multiple fights and unruly partying that police say “completely overwhelmed” officers who struggled to restore order and herd nearly 5,000 cars off the beach in this island city.
At least 12 people were arrested and one officer broke his finger Sunday trying to control the crowd, Galveston police Lt. Jorge Trevino said. Almost four hours passed before police cleared the streets.
Problems began when police tried arresting a group of men fighting. Other fights then broke out and left four officers patrolling the concert “completely overwhelmed,” Trevino said.
All on-duty officers and some whose shifts had not begun were eventually called to the scene, Galveston police Sgt. Byron Franklin said. Authorities shut down four city streets while trying to get as many as 5,000 cars off East Beach, he said.
“It was an absolute fiasco,” said Johnny Smecca, owner of Mario’s Italian Restaurant.
Smecca said he saw people urinating in the alley behind his restaurant and dancing on top of cars.
The concert, called the “Spring Break Party Beach Bash,” was hosted by Houston radio station Party 93.3. The event was to feature artists 2 Pistols, Colby O’Donnis, Lil Wil & Lil Keke, and Webbie, according to the station’s Web site.
Ha, I’m in Houston and have avoided going to Galveston on this weekend for many years now. About 6 years ago a friend and I went through Galveston on Thursday evening and took the ferry over to the Bolivar Penensula to camp and fish for the weekend. Normal as can be on the drive there. On our way back sunday morning we noticed cops everywhere and the place was a mess. Trash and empty beer bottles , ( lot’s of 40 oz.”s) were everywhere. We had to stop and get gas and asked the store clerk what the hell happened. She, ( a black female), replied that”A bunch of damned nasty assed, out of town, niggers had been there trashing the place all weekend.” They have this event just about every year and hire a buttload of out of town cops to compliment the local force but usually it’s just a mess after it’s all over with. Apparently this year it got rowdy., Magine that.

I live just north of G-Town (Galveston) and used to work down there. It’s a shit-hole. Trust me, these guys didn’t ruin anything. The county seat is there (which means that’s where all the pj’s and everything else is at). Rampant drug issues including mainly crack and meth. It’s got like a 4 sq. mile area near the cruise ship terminal that’s “ok” and kinda touristy, but besides that, it’s a waste. If you want to come to the Gold Coast for beach time and some fun I’d recommend to stay in Houston (Warehouse Dist., Midtown, Galleria, ASTROS!), San Antonio (duh!) or Corpus Christi. Dallas, Austin, G-Town are all a waste of time.

March 17th, 2008 at 11:26 amSummer of ‘67, just before the coeds learned from Prof. that GIs were murdering rapists, I felt very welcome in Galveston in that slippery, sweaty, “I’m in love again”, way. The bay was full of stinging jellyfish but I didn’t go there to swim.
