 Bob...

Aye.

I was in the Coast Guard in the early 80's and I kept wanting to add this text to the post, it's what was piped through the ship's loudspeakers every night:

(Bos'n Pipe)

"Now, Taps, Taps
Lights out
Maintain silence about the decks
Now Taps."

Geez, now I know why I didn't type it before...this floodgate gate opens in my memory.

RIP Fallen Brave.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup Runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

 Steve ... I really like this one too:

"The Mansions of the Lord"
Words by Randall Wallace

To fallen soldiers let us sing
where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
to the mansions of the Lord

No more bleeding no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
just divine embrace, eternal light
in the mansions of the Lord

Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard tho the angels sleep
All through the ages safely keep the mansions of the Lord

 drillanwr, that's beautiful, thank you for the link also.

Hits hard at the close of the song:

Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me

....

As my days go by I will never forget these warriors who have stood for my nation my family and me.

Rest well brave souls.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

- Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

 Steve -

Another ... and a piece of it can be heard near the later part of "The Mansions of The Lord" from Mel Gibson's "We Were Soldiers"
----------------------------------------------------------

"Sgt. MacKenzie"
by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie (he wrote it for his Great-Grandfather killed in WWI)

[Scots Tongue]

Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun
Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun

When they come a wull staun ma groon
Staun ma groon al nae be afraid

[edit] [English Translation]

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone

When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground I'll not be afraid

Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears

Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me

Never more shall I see the sun
For I fell to a German's gun

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone

And to all my fellow members of the Order of the Spur

Halfway down the trail to hell
    In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
    Near a good old-time canteen
    And this eternal resting place
    Is known as Fiddler’s Green.

Marching past, straight through to hell,
    The infantry are seen,
    Accompanied by the Engineers,
    Artillery and Marine,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
    Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
    To seek a warmer scene,
No trooper ever gets to Hell
    Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
    With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
    Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge or fierce melee
    You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
    Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
    And go to Fiddlers' Green.
