Good article.

“They are compassionate. They genuinely care - not just about each other, but about Iraqis, too. I saw it again and again. They are compassionate young men and women.”

 said it before, to define the greatest generation as Brokaw has is an insult to the men and women who have volunteered to stand in defense of this nation and the ideals of human liberty.

The general sees the old inter-service rivalry as a relic of the past: “In Iraq, there’s only respect for capabilities between the Army and Marines. Marines command soldiers, soldiers command Marines. We’re all brothers in arms.

 Was it Franks which changed battlespace command to include all branches working together at the begin of the Afghan campaign?

“As for Iraq, we have made significant progress . . . and it’s in our strategic interests to have a friendly government in Iraq. Our soldiers have sacrificed a great deal. It should not be in vain.”

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— John McCrae

The sad thing is that great Americans like Pace, Odierno and Petraeus are the least likely to go into politics, where we need them. Instead, we get disgraces like Wesley Clark. Not to mention all the lawyers. I think anyone with a law degree should be barred from public office. Sure, we'll lose a few good ones, but most of them are parasites in the Edwards, Clinton, and Obama mold.

The saddest part is that probably only ~5% of the Americn people know who this great man is...In another era he'd be a household word, shorthand for "national hero," in the mold of Patton, McArthur, Pyle, etc.

God bless the General!
