Try out a lot of different guns before you settle on one.

At the absolute least, you should have a pump-action shotgun. That cha-chunk sound takes all the fight out of most punks.

Rifles are good for hunting and target shooting, but not much use in close quarters, especially since you’d be surprised how far a .308 round can go and how many walls it can penetrate, especially that sheetrock shit that everyone uses these days.

As for pistols, never use a caliber that starts with less than a .4.

9×19mm NATO is plenty of firepower with modern jacketed hollow-point ammunition (Gold Dot, Ranger, TAP, etc) and produces similar terminal ballistics to .40 S&W .45 ACP. That .4 myth only applies to military combat cartridges, which are forced to use full-metal-jacketed bullets and thus need the extra size.

If this is a defensive handgun (not for plinking) think twice before buying the cheap stuff. When you’re getting ready to defend yourself, do you want to know that you bought the cheapest gun? The old adage is true, that you get what you pay for. A new Glock can be found around $450-500, and in the same price range you can also get an FN Herstal FNP-9, or a CZ-75B. For a tad more there’s Heckler and Koch, and Sig. All great companies with stellar reputations with regard to accuracy and reliability. Ultimately, you shouldn’t rely on the internet to make your decision… go out and find a friend who’s experienced with firearms and will help you pick the right gun.

Oh, and I’m 20, saving up for my first pistol Probably gonna be a Glock 19.

Definitely try out some different handguns to find which suits you better. For home defense, I am with TicTicBoom on the shotgun.

In the DFW area, there is DFW Gun Club that is off of 35E and Mockingbird (I think) and then there is Bullet Trap in Plano. I know about Bullet Trap because I try to visit there every quarter to refresh. Both have gun rental counters and indoor firing ranges so you can test fire before you buy. I know Bullet Trap has an adequate range of manufacturers and calibers for you to try out.

Go see Larry at the Beretta Gallery in Highland Park Village. The new 90-two and PX4 storm are excellent shooting weapons that are highly accurate and built with design and feel that lesser pistols just don’t possess. Larry sold me a .40 cal 90-two for 630, about 100 less than everyone else wanted for it. Super safe, super deadly.

Do not buy a 9mm. As a Texas concealed handgun license holder, you will be responsible for the bullet should it pass through the offender and hit another person. A 9 mm will go through 2 people faster than shit. A .40 and above will hit like a ton of brinks flying faster than the speed of sound and quickly incapacitate a mother fucker.

Be a good Texan and get your CHL licence from dr gilreath in ft worth…1 day class, 99 bucks. Can’t beat it.

Everyone has an opinion on what is best rifle for you.

My opinion:

DPMS is the low end (I wouldn’t suggest DPMS), Bushmaster or Rockriver arms. Then S&W MP15. Then Colt, LMT, Novaske, and a few others. Visit AR15.com and browse the info there.

Don’t build one.

I have an LMT Defender 2000 MRP CQB 16″ and it is likely more gun than I will ever need. But I appreciate quality and I wanted what many consider a top quality rifle.

And long as it shoots 5.56 Nato and is reliable, the name on the side doesn’t matter.

Being a total novice, I assume I’ll be the worst shot in the world for a while.

Where do I get affordable, high quality ammo?

A friend told me to buy in bulk on the internet.
Was he right? Or should I look to the local brick and mortar gun shops?
