“Fitna” And Today’s Capitulating Brits
By Matt Sanchez
Today, the shores of Normandy are not a particularly frightening place. Even with the constant overcast that typifies the months before spring, Normandy Beach seems suspiciously like any other hibernating vacation community before the “season” begins. The locals frequent little restaurants that look more like someone’s living room to drink home-distilled Calvados made from the apples they grow and warm cider.
Three and a half generations ago, this community was under the surveillance of the Nazis. There was a growing suspicion that the bucolic landscape was going to be the site of a massive invasion, a debarquement, as the French called it.
On June 6, 1944, young British soldiers emerged from boats and were literally sitting ducks on the tempestuous waters. Gear tangled, some drowned, others made it to shore only to be maimed or worse by high-powered German artillery jutting out of well-constructed German pillboxes.
The first to reach the shores must have prayed for survival amidst the explosions of shells and the muted cries of the wounded. They fought against enormous odds that day, and for some reason many continued on, despite the odds of being killed, to liberate a nation that was not their own. Where did these men derive their courage? Surely, they wanted their children and descendants to live free.
Three and a half generations later, the offspring of those brave boys willing to face a very uncertain future are far more pragmatic than their forefathers. LiveLeak markets itself as a renegade alternative to its ubiquitous competitor, YouTube. The video-hosting website shows much amateur footage of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, mixed among the racy videos LiveLeak allows and tons of short clips featuring people in front of their computers attempting to be heard by the unknown masses who may or may not click on their Your Say video.
Those who record their statements from the comfort of their home fancy themselves as a rebellious alternative to the mainstream. These voices use major terms like constitutional, fairness, justice and freedom. The administrators at LiveLeak talk up the value of expression. They even encourage a lively debate, but they themselves capitulated when faced with the possibility of having to pay some cost for that freedom.
The movie “Fitna” is just a compilation of atrocities most of us have seen or heard. A beheading here, a mullah calling for death there, some footage of children being told that non-Muslims are pigs fit to be slaughtered – the standard indoctrination stuff any “religion of peace” would support – but LiveLeak quickly decided to pull the video from it’s millions of moving imagery because of “threats to our staff of a very serious nature.”
No explosion or German ammo hurdling at them downrange. No threat of a mine only strong enough to blow off a limb, but not merciful enough to kill. The inheritors of the freedoms won at the stretch of beach code-named “Gold” under the grand event known as Operation Overlord followed a tactical decision to capitulate with the first volley of threatening e-mails. In defense of LiveLeak, it did qualify the messages as “credible.”
The shores of Normandy are a short ferry ride from the British Isles, but the people who fought and died on Gold Beach are somewhere the average Brit will never reach.
Three generations and a half before, the British proved their bravery under conditions we cannot imagine, but most of us appreciate. Those boys pressed forward, all the way through to Paris and eventually Berlin. Historically, the Brits have been known for toughness, even during the horrors of trench warfare, but today a couple of e-mails is enough to get a subject to waive the white flag, and they’ll even publicize their own cowardice as one of the terms of agreement for a war they do not have the courage to fight.
Brits: “If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”
God bless those of the Greatest Generation.
Thank God, the Democrats were a wiser & more sensible breed back then, and both parties had the resolve to achieve absolute victory. Can you imagine if we had to pull off an Operation: Overlord in this day in time, with the MSM we have?! Omaha Beach would have been declared as impossible to win!
April 1st, 2008 at 2:16 pmHow bad will it get before they battle back?
I always wonder if the success of the post war western countries has helped create a population that is unable to conceive of the evil that can be found in some humans.
April 1st, 2008 at 2:46 pmIt is just like the Mafia when you think about it. The Mafia goes in and kills or beats the hell out of one merchant, and the rest of the merchants see what happend and capitualate. Muslims have been watching their Godfather reruns, except this time it is a whole country that is intimidated. It would not bother me so much if not for the brave British troops fighting with us. The muslims carry signs that call for death and killing of infadels right in the heart of London, while brave soldiers bleed on the battlefield. At one point, Airmen at one base were advised to not wear their uniform off base. In the article you quoted Winston Churchill, he is not spinning in his grave, he just turned over so he doesn’t have to see what is happening anymore.

April 2nd, 2008 at 4:31 amActually, the death threats were real. And after improving security arrangements, LiveLeak put it back up, with a middle-finger to the threateners.
A bit too quick to judge, Pat.
