The Quilliam Foundation (named after a 19th century British convert) is being pitched as advancing the counter-argument to extremism. It is another case of the moderate emporer who has new clothes.

"The think-tank aims to develop its arguments out of the Islamic theological tradition, rather than simply use Western secular arguments against versions of political Islam which it regards as distorted and damaging.
Its founding statement says: "Western Muslims should be free from the cultural baggage of the Indian subcontinent, or the political burdens of the Arab world. We were born and raised in a milieu that is different from the Muslim East. As such, our future and progeny belong here."

From the The Quilliam Foundation:
"Just as Muslims across the globe have adopted from and adapted to local cultures and traditions, while remaining true to the essence of their faith, Western Muslims should pioneer new thinking for our new times. Here, Muslim scholastic giants, such as the noble Abdullah bin Bayyah and Shaikh Ali Goma (Mufti of Egypt), have provided ample guidance."

"Not reassuring. Ali Gomaa is the statue-hatin', wife-beatin', Hizballah-supportin', Muhammad's-urine-drinkin' Mufti of Egypt, who not long ago denied reports that he had rejected the traditional Islamic death sentence for apostates. The delirious Dinesh D'Souza has praised him as a "traditional Muslim" with whom American conservatives should cultivate an alliance. I do not think Americans should be so naive, and do not think that the Quilliam Foundation's invocation of this man as a moderate bodes well for its own claims of moderation."

Whether or not AQ is having problems with their tactics is beside the point. Islam world-wide in all its falvors continues to pursue a doctrine of subjigation, supremacy and world conquest. Islam itself is the problem.

You cannot claim to be an Islamniac and say you are a moderate. You're either a liar or naive.

Anyone who thinks that Islam and the west can co-exist are insane. There has never been a coexistance of Islam with any other philosophy in any country where Islam is supreme or in acendency. Islam seeks to dominate, not co-exist.

Yes there is multiculturalism is Islam only so far as the Dhimis stay in their places and pay the jizya.

Irrespective of whether or not AQ becomes a pariah in its own community, Islam will continue to seek the abolishen of all things western because Sharia (Allah's law and government) is the only law that Islam recognizes.

In places like Iraq and Algeria, AQ is getting their asses handed to them. AQI has been rejected by Sunnis. They are in the words of Mr Ali"...trying to stay plugged in to Muslim opinion.”

But don't lose sight of the bigger problem westerners. Your survival as a culture is at stake.

There has never been a coexistance of Islam with any other philosophy in any country

Except in Andalucia, till that the Castillans wanted to conquest it (before being Mauresque, it was a Visigoths place)

These were the only enlightened times of the muslims, that created universities bibliotheques... where the jews, the catholics and the muslims could live in peace.

Jeez, that was a pretty good comment Dan!
You stated what I was thinking a third of the way into the article....That inter-sect squabbling within islam does not change the overall goals of islam. They have just noticed that their current tactics aren't as effective as they would have liked them to be.
