Wow. Just when I'm about to lose my "slow connection" excuse, Hillary has provided me with a new one. Now I just say, "Sorry, I was pinned down by sniper fire" just as she did on Leno.

Internet 2 has existed for ten years, we're just not invited.

"While Internet1 is open to pretty much anyone with a computer, access to Internet2 is limited to a select few, and its backbone is made up entirely of large-capacity fiber-optic cables. Rather than Internet1, which is cobbled together out of old telephone lines, Internet2 was built for speed—the roads are all wide and smooth, like your own private autobahn. Internet2 moves data at 10 gigabits per second and more, compared with the 4 or so megabits you'll get using a cable modem. As a result, Internet2 moves data 100 to 1,000 times faster than the old-fashioned Internet."

Reminds me of William Gibson's Neuromancer.

Japan gets pretty kick-ass speed now. They get 93,693 megabits a second compared to America's 8,860 megabits.

They can pretty much watch high definition tv via the internet.

Verizon's pushing FIos, which brings fiber directly to your house. My parents upstate have it already. 20 mps internet connection, and that's just the beginning. There's only so much data you can push through with coax or copper, but there's no hard ceiling with fiber. We're selling half our real estate holdings to pay for it. Hell, they're turning our headquarters on 42nd into condos.

The cable companies have been suing to keep it away from the public instead of doing it themselves. Plus, they've been flooding the airwaves with bullshit commercials. If you pay attention, they never, ever give hard numbers.

Jimmy fucking Dolan has cost me alot of money, and I'm pissed that I don't have it yet because he paid off some judge. Bastard would kill his own mother for a nickel.

My off-campus Apt. only gets the service we pay for, when Fall & Spring classes aren't in session. Comcastic, my ass! It works fine back home. My thinking is, they don't care about college students, who won't be living here permanently.

I'd love to have FIOS right now, but Blacksburg hasn't received that yet. On-campus, however, it's just fine (as with most big colleges). The more bandwidth, the better!
