It's really just an M16 style rifle with improvements in two areas...the operating system (gas piston / rod / valve as opposed to the original direct gas impingment system), and the magazine is redesigned. Larry Vickers (ex-US Army SF) did most of the development on it. If they ever do release it to the civie world (H&K has gone back and forth the last few years about whether they'll do it) I think it will be 5.56mm only (no 6.8 SPC). Not that 5.56 is bad in anyway for home use / self defense...it only lacks perceived knockdown power because the Military isn't allowed to use expanding bullets (like hollow points). Ball ammo (especially NATO M855 with a steel penetrator core) in such a small diameter and at such high velocity, can blow right through without creating a large wound channel unless it hits something with some mass that will cause it to fragment. That's why M855 isn't that well liked in general (at least in terms of knockdown power for the Military), unless you are shooting through objects to get to your target. M193 isn't a whole lot better really. It's lighter and faster, but that presents the same type of problems. But for home use you can use whatever bullet that is available to buy (I like the heavier 77 gr Hollow Point). And the regular direct gas system is fine for home use as long as you take care of your firearm. Keep it clean, don't convert it to full auto (the receiver / chamber get carbon fouled pretty quick on full auto with a direct gas system), and it will work fine. If you really want the best and you feel you need the extra reliability of the gas piston system, and you want it in 6.8 SPC, then I recommend LWRC. I think it's nicer than the H&K...better quality and excellent engineering. And it's made in the USA. It is expensive though (about $2,000 for a complete rifle), and if you can't find a dealer who has one (either complete or you can buy the upper receiver separately if you already have an AR-15 style) you'll be waiting a while.
