Iraq’s Main News Agency, Voices Of Iraq:

Baghdad, Apr 8, (VOI) – Leader of the Sadrist movement, Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr, consulted the clergy about dissolving the Mahdi Army, but they “rejected” this issue, said a Sadrist spokesperson on Tuesday.

He also repeated al-Sadr’s instructions to his followers to postpone the demonstration he recently demanded them to join on Wednesday, to “preserve their blood.”

In a press conference on Tuesday, Sheikh Salah al-Obaidi read a statement signed by the movement’s leader, saying that Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr demands “the beloved Iraqi people who want to demonstrate against the occupation, to postpone the demonstration, because I want to preserve their blood.”

Al-Sadr added in today’s release, “I fear that Iraqi hands may harm you, but I am honored if the American’s hands harm you.”

He stressed that the security deployment conducted by the Iraqi authorities “renders that the Iraqi government is still under the detestable U.S. pressure.”

Leader of the Sadr movement called on the Iraqi government of Premier Nouri al-Maliki to “demand the occupier’s withdrawal, or to draft a timetable for its presence in our holy lands, instead of demanding the impossible,” referring to al-Maliki’s demands to dissolve the Mahdi Army, the armed wing of the Sadrist movement.

The release demanded the government “provide services, security, stability, independence, and the good living that the oppressed Iraqi is looking for, and the government should ’seek’ God’s satisfaction through the satisfaction of its clergies and scholars.”

The top Shiite cleric referred in his statement that the “Mahdi Army will be hand by hand with the Iraqi people, to provide the people’s needs of security, stability, independence, liberation, unity, brotherhood, and intimacy.”

But Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr warned that he may disband the freeze on Mahdi Army. “If the interest requires lifting the freeze to implement our aims, beliefs, religion, national constants, then later we will do, in a separate statement.”

In a press conference today, the senior Sadrist cleric, Sheikh Salah al-Obaidi said that Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr “has until now abided by the decision to freeze the Mahdi Army.”

“As Sayid Muqtada explained in his statement, will not be canceled unless there is a separate statement in this regard that indicates disbanding Mahdi Army freeze, issued by ‘Martyr al-Sadr’ office in Najaf,” he clarified.

Al-Obaidi stressed that all the decisions related to Mahdi Army “are exclusively in the hands of Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr,” and that “al-Sadr used to make decisions regarding the Mahdi Army after consulting the clergy.”

He revealed that Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr “recently consulted the clergy about dissolving the Mahdi Army, but the major clergies rejected this issue.”

“In a TV interview with al-Jazeera satellite TV station two weeks ago, Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr identified those clergy as Sayid al-Sistani’s and Sayid al-Ha’iri’s,” al-Obaidi clarified.

He added that freezing the Mahdi Army “came about for essential interests and necessities, after we recognized that Iraq last year was t toward stability and a positive direction; hence why Sayid Muqtada actually made the decision to freeze the Mahdi Army throughout two periods with respect to this issue.”

“Until now we see no interest in ending the freeze,” al-Obaidi proceeded.

“The sequence of disbanding the freeze on the Mahdi Army that was mentioned through Sayid Muqtada’s statement is to apply what is in the interest of the Iraqi people,” he noted, asserting “if the freeze becomes an obstacle, and other sides wrongly used the freeze against us, this will give us the opportunity to serve our society’s people by lifting the freeze.”

He explained “Sayid Muqtada al-Sadr always calls on ending armed scenes, and he called on all parties to solve problems using dialogue, and that the government should have a fatherhood spirit in dealing with problems.”

“The government made no positive steps in response to the Mahdi Army’s freeze and ending armed scenes,” al-Obaidi said, adding “the government allowed elements that infiltrated the Iraqi army and police to hit the Sadrist movement.”

Al-Obaidi perceived “The government has the right to take all the measures against criminals, but we advise the government not to make this as a pretext to kill or oppress innocents.”

Concerning prohibiting the Sadr movement from participating in elections if the Mahdi Army was not dissolved, Al-Obaidi said “the premier has no authority to make such decisions, because this issue is attributed either to the independent electoral commission, or to the Iraqi parliament.”

Al-Obaidi clarified why Wednesday’s demonstration was canceled, saying “The demonstration was scheduled for Wednesday, but the government put obstacles in this concern.”

He added “Sadrist lawmakers discussed the demonstration issue with certain governmental and security sides to facilitate this matter, but after an agreement on Monday in this respect, we were surprised that thousands of vehicles that Sadrists used to travel to Baghdad were prevented from entering the capital.”

Adidas must be proud of the promo campaign this dude is running. How cool would that be if the RPG went off? As far as Muki is concerned, I give him 6-12 months before his days come to an end.

Whata loada bafflegab. The march is cancelled because it was doomed to flop. Clerics rejected responsibility for his decisions, so the “rejected the issue”. And so on.

    The man is inane.
