Iowa Jima Vets Blast Time Magazine Cover As “Absolute Disgrace”
Business And Media Institute:
For only the second time in 85 years, Time magazine abandoned the traditional red border it uses on its cover. The occasion – to push more global warming alarmism.
The cover of the April 21 issue of Time took the famous Iwo Jima photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Marines raising the American flag and replaced the flag with a tree. The cover story by Bryan Walsh calls green “the new red, white and blue.”
Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, told the Business & Media Institute on April 17 that using that photograph for that cause was a “disgrace.”
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Mates said. “Whoever did it is going to hell. That’s a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor.”
Mates also said making the comparison of World War II to global warming was erroneous and disrespectful.
“The second world war we knew was there,” Mates said. “There’s a big discussion. Some say there is global warming, some say there isn’t. And to stick a tree in place of a flag on the Iwo Jima picture is just sacrilegious.”
According to the American Veterans Center (AVC), Mates served in the 3rd Marine Division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, landing on Feb. 24, 1945.
“A few days later, Mates’ eight-man patrol came under heavy assault from Japanese forces,” Tim Holbert, a spokesman for the AVC, said. “During fierce-hand-to-hand combat, Mates watched as his friend and fellow Marine, Jimmy Trimble, was killed in front of his eyes. Mates was severely wounded, and underwent repeated operations for shrapnel removal for over 30 years.”
Lt. John Keith Wells, the leader of the platoon that raised the flags on Mt. Suribachi and co-author of “Give Me Fifty Marines Not Afraid to Die: Iwo Jima” wasn’t impressed with Time’s efforts.
“That global warming is the biggest joke I’ve ever known,” Wells told the Business & Media Institute. “[W]e’ll stick a dadgum tree up somebody’s rear if they want that and think that’s going to cure something.”
Time managing editor Richard Stengel appeared on MSNBC April 17 and said the United States needed to make a major effort to fight climate change, and that the cover’s purpose was to liken global warming to World War II.
“[O]ne of the things we do in the story is we say there needs to be an effort along the lines of preparing for World War II to combat global warming and climate change,” Stengel said. “It seems to me that this is an issue that is very popular with the voters, makes a lot of sense to them and a candidate who can actually bundle it up in some grand way and say, ‘Look, we need a national and international Manhattan Project to solve this problem and my candidacy involves that.’ I don’t understand why they don’t do that.”
Holbert, a speaking on behalf of the American Veterans Center, said the editorial decision by Time to use the photograph for the cover trivialized the cause the veterans fought for.
“Global warming may or may not be a significant threat to the United States,” Holbert said. “The Japanese Empire in February of 1945, however, certainly was, and this photo trivializes the most recognizable moment of one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. history. War analogies should be used sparingly by political advocates of all bents.”
Stengel also appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on April 17 and had no difficulty admitting the magazine needed to have a “point of view.”
“I think since I’ve been back at the magazine, I have felt that one of the things that’s needed in journalism is that you have to have a point of view about things,” Stengel said. “You can’t always just say ‘on the one hand, on the other’ and you decide. People trust us to make decisions. We’re experts in what we do. So I thought, you know what, if we really feel strongly about something let’s just say so.”
Time has been banging the global warming drum for some time now. In April 2007, Time offered 51 ways to “save the planet,” which included more taxes and regulation.
I’m sooo fucking sick of this shit.
The global warming cult/movement is the fucking Kudzu on our society …
April 17th, 2008 at 9:32 pmI present to you everything that is wrong with journalism and news reporting today…
April 17th, 2008 at 9:49 pm“I have felt that one of the things that’s needed in journalism is that you have to have a point of view about things,” Stengel said. “You can’t always just say ‘on the one hand, on the other’ and you decide. People trust us to make decisions. We’re experts in what we do. So I thought, you know what, if we really feel strongly about something let’s just say so.”
Stengel, it is not up to you to decide for me what is and is not - this is the typical elitist “we know what’s best for you” mentality. The idea, I thought, is that as Fox news so aptly puts it, we report, you decide. You are supposed to be the eyes on the scene telling me what is happening, not the sociology professor telling me what to think.
Frankly, I don’t trust the lamestream news media for anything, other than a consistently liberal bias, 24/7. As for being experts, I think Time should back quietly away from that one, considering the recent and quite unprofessional scandals with fabricated news stories that have rocked the media.
The scary part is how fascist this whole thing is, and how it is so ingrained in the lamestream media - “shut up, see what I tell you to see, think what I tell you to think and do what I tell you to do, you brainless sheep.” Sounds like Islam, just in slightly different packaging.

April 17th, 2008 at 10:22 pmDrill, I heard that last week on Glenn Beck. Thanks for reproviding.
Despite the debt owed to those Marines, I won’t be joining Time Mag in pledging allergies to the (green) flag of the United Snags of America. And to the reluctant, forested lands One Generation under Gaia with liberal judgement for all.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:24 pmPardon me all if that borders on the treesoness.
good posts
Completely insane, disgraceful, sickening. Completely routine for a liberal. Fuck Time.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:45 pmI’m certain we’ll all fill this thread with our thoughts on the whole global warming bullshit …
But I DO want to address the direct point of the post … and that IS the GW movement’s desecration and invasion of things that are established in their own right (such as the Iwo Jima image and it’s historical marker) … hence my Kudzu remark above in my first post.
There is nothing sacred to these people … except their agenda.
The 9-11 photo of the firefighters raising the Flag in Iwo fashion at Ground Zero was apropos and not staged. I don’t believe I heard one complaint from Iwo veterans.
What you see above is fucking blatant and in-your-face plagiarism … not only of a historical photo, but of the sacrifice many many Marines made in that battle. Time is pissing on their graves, and on their memories.
Whoever is responsible for photoshopping this abomination is lame, lazy, clueless, and doesn’t have an original or artistic ounce of grey-matter inside their skull.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:45 pmthis ‘global warming’ fad is going to run out, (hopefully sooner or later). It’ll be interesting to see when the folks who lose all their money in ‘green company’ investments dot the street corners begging for a little bit of MY green
April 17th, 2008 at 11:53 pmhere is what bugs me even if global warming is false, the policy behind its prevention is still sound, there are still things such as air and water pollution depletion of natural resources etc….whats the big deal, right or wrong we all win…the key is simply not to go overboard with environmental policy to the detriment of our economy, but there is really no risk of that…as far as i can tell or have seen, environmental policy generally works best when business and environmentalist come to an agreement about how to proceed.
April 18th, 2008 at 12:52 amlet me just ask you all this is planting a tree for what ever reason, really that offensive, Chicago has the best air quality of any metropolitan area in America and its because he have trees, and green roofs, and lots of plants to clean the air up….OMG WTF…trees are cool…calm the fuck down…i really doubt ira hayes or who ever is actually in the picture are rolling in there grave on this one.
April 18th, 2008 at 1:00 amyou can plant all the trees you want and ride your bicycle to work, but forces stronger than climate change is whatsgonna rock our world..fall mountain fall, just dont fall on me. we’ll just stick a tree up somebodys rear and see if that cures something. lets start with al gore
April 18th, 2008 at 3:24 amThe image of the Iwo Jima flag raising is on the official Marine Corp ring that many jarheads have. I still wear mine daily to remind me of what I can do as an individual.
The traditions and history that is taught to us throughout basic training, and in fact our entire service has this historic moment as one of the most inspiring acts of the entire 232+ year history of the Corps. It is part of the esprit de corps we have instilled into us by our service.
I was able to acquire a number of original photos when on active duty. A few are from WWI, many from WWII, and some from Korea and VN. Included in the WWII shots are pictures from MacArthur accepting the japanese surrender. The most prized are some photos taken during the Iwo Jima battle.
When times are tough, or I feel that it is next to impossible to drive on, I usually do one of two things. I look to my beautiful 6 year-old son for inspiration for the future of the country and world, or I flip through those old photos to show me what our past heroes went through for us, and it helps remind me what our current heroes are doing in uniform around the world for us. needless to say, these are in addition to my constant faith in the Lord, who has carried our country and military through so much.
The photoshop Time Ragazine did is another reason why years ago I cancelled my subscription, along with the daily rags I used to get. I also regularly glance through the paper at work to see which major advertisers support the MSM rags, and I email or send letters to the management advising them that their support of X magazin or X newspaper and its liberal, soicalist lies is why I will not support THEIR business.
If more people did that, the MSM print media might finally wake the hell up and stop their traitorous editorials dressed as “news” stories.
I know i have posted this many times in the past, but business is business, and when retailers are looking for customers, especially when they are losing business, they WILL notice, and we can make a huge difference.

Yes, I agree … Being good stewards of the gift we’ve been given.
Recycle, don’t pollute if you can help it. Respect the plant and animal population/growth.
However, what is going on with global warming is a friggin’ religious/world socialist movement. They are talking taxes and laws, not only in this country, but world taxes and world laws … SEE: One wolrd government … They presume to dictate every aspect of your life … right down to what kind of light bulb you read by. We have already seen in the last week or two what jumping the gun on “GW solutions” can result in … additional stress and strain on the world’s food shortages. And the stupid light bulbs they insist on are filled with mercury.
I refuse to be forced to do anything.
But what is even worse about all of this is the fact there is NO consensus … There has been NO extensive public debate of ALL scientists. Data has been altered and ignored. People are slobbering at the thought of not only making money from this, but obtaining control over the masses. This has been shoved down our throats for a couple years now … and it’s been like a freight train with NO reasoning.
And we see things such as the Time cover above that shows the blatant disregard for anyone else’s feelings or rights. Our children are being inundated and indoctrinated with this stuff in school … yet, it has nothing to do with their still falling test scores.
The left’s been extreme and irrational about this. Comparing them to fascists is not off the mark.
April 18th, 2008 at 5:06 amI get the feeling that journalists are out to piss off half the country and the other half goes along to piss us off too! Time to buy a gun.
April 18th, 2008 at 5:27 amdrillanwr (hembra blanca típica)
Great post! you definitely explained my feelings right there. As someone who screwed up and bought the damn light bulbs i should know. yes they last for 5 years, but at the time i didnt know they were filled with mercury.
This stuff has just been crazy though. with all of their tactics and somehow making global warming apart of almost any subject in this country. Im hearing it so much that im about to turn off my television. They are selling global warming like it was a companys brand name except with much larger agendas than selling something. they want to own us, dictate us.
April 18th, 2008 at 5:28 amWhy do I have to take care of the planet by giving the government money, huh?
April 18th, 2008 at 5:31 amhegelbot seeing as how you really don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to either global warming/its affects or Iwo Jima you should not be talking about who would or would not be rolling in their grave.
I do beleive that Ira would be rolling in his grave, he was not a political man; and being thrust into the political debate (especially where there is no debate allowed) would make him uncomfortable if not piss him the fuck off!!
Oh yeah, I live in Chicago and the few trees and flower boxes that Mayor Daley has installed really does not make the air any better or worse.

April 18th, 2008 at 5:35 amSorry for coming back again but did you know the Planet Mars is going through a global Warming too?!! Oops, its our fault! We have those pesky two Mars Rovers over there changing the climate of Mars!!!

Did ya feel the earth move in the middle of the night, or was all the fun away from your neck of the woods?

[[[Planet Mars is going through a global Warming too]]]
Our fault too … Mars is sucking up the residual/radiation/flux of “warming” seeping off Earth.
Only solution there … After forcing a global tax, that the USA will pay 95% of, send up a multi-billion $$$ nuke powered monster fan to blow our heat pollution escaping our ’surly bonds of earth’ and infecting the rest of the Solar System, out into deep space …

April 18th, 2008 at 8:14 amYou are 180 degrees out of phase…. I don’t think anyone here is against planting trees or taking care of our resources responsibly. That is a persistent trick of the left, to demonize those who are against the environmentalist wacko agenda as being nature haters, tree haters, animal haters blah, blah, blah.
What we hate is an agenda which seeks to subjugate the entire planet by means of a baseless, “scientific” quasi-religion, and attempts to manipulate economies and force taxation on the world, while a few well-placed scam artists like Algore get rich off the whole thing.
To claim there is no risk to our economy shows that you perhaps never studied economics and the effects of this kind of taxation on economies - especially western economies which will bear the brunt of legislation/taxation, while the real polluters in the underdeveloped third world and China walk away scott free.
Environmentalists (also known as Marxist/Communist/capitalism haters) and capitalists will never agree on policy - by its very nature, environmentalist policy suffocates capitalism-based economies, and in effect seeks to turn progress backwards.
Take a look at gas and food prices right now - you can thank the global warming, ethanol pushing environmentalists for that.
It’s not about trees, fruitcup. It’s about those assclowns at Time disrespecting those great men. That picture is a source of pride and inspiration to all American Warriors. Traitors and cowards could never understand this.
April 18th, 2008 at 8:20 amas far as the use of the image, if people are genuinely offended by the image, fair enough.
My main point is that the goals of reducing emissions corresponds to well established environmental concerns other than the global warming controversy. Smog is real, acid rain is real, degraded soil and water quality are real. The quality of basic natural resources necessarily effect business. And i think i qualified my statements by saying only measures which accommodate business and the environment should be pursued.
I don’t have the time to articulate how i think we should achieve those goals, but i am not on board with the current global warming “Kyoto agreement” type policies.
Lock and load, yeah i agree with you on ethanol, it is a bad idea, nuclear energy, advances in solar and wind tech, and more efficient and cleaner power cells are the way to go. As far as your belief the (1) environmentalists are communists, well i don’t think teddy Roosevelt was a communist (2) that business and environmentalist are mortal enemies, most of experiences i have had with local efforts have been successful because conservationists and local business have come together to develop a plan for sustainable development. It all about using best management standards in preserving unique natural spaces and in developing land for commercial, industrial, residential and agricultural uses.
Howie, yes i see that NY has better air quality than Chicago, but the greening policies are having a positive effect, it is not just a touchy feel good policy.
April 18th, 2008 at 10:39 amhegelbot…take it somewhere else. There are plenty of your kind on other sites. The problem here is the lack of respect time has given the ones who allow you to plant your damn trees in peace. I actually believe we should cut some down because I keep scratching my 870. And now our kids in these socialist schools are going to think WWII was about trees seeing they dont teach history any more.
April 18th, 2008 at 11:17 amWhat in the hell makes Time magazine the experts They are the last people I want telling me what the hell to do…
April 18th, 2008 at 12:08 pmRyker what is my kind exactly?
i read this site cause i agree with its take on the war in Iraq. And it is a great site for updates on the war on terror. Unfortunately i usually refrain from just posting comments in concurrence cause, i really don’t see the value of preaching to the choir.
Most of the time when i do comment i am usually trying to engage in a meaningful exchange of ideas, and many times i do learn something from the responses i get which is great.
But really what kind am I? Please i would really like to know.
And as i said above if this image really offends you fair enough, fair play. Seemed to me the issue was global warming and respect to veterans, said my piece about global warming, and asked you all if it was really that offensive, i didn’t personally feel it was.
April 18th, 2008 at 12:21 pmlol everything that hegel said makes sense. he is not saying the government should mandate environmental laws that would be detrimental to business! just that businesses feel the pressure to be more aware of the environment around them and make technological advances to adapt to what is needed.
April 18th, 2008 at 1:14 pmhegelbot
I guess our personal experiences have caused us to come at this topic from opposite ends of the debate, even though we probably are not that far apart.
Apparently your experiences with environmentalists at your local level have been good - mine have not, and if you look at the “climate” in the Democratic party right now, I see very few business friendly politicians/environmentalists. They prefer to not allow use of available resources in the US (how that is business friendly, I do not know), and they follow the lead of the most radical branches of the environmental movement.
I agree that in a perfect world there should be no environmental laws that are detrimental to business, but the idealogues in the environmental movement (like Algore) have girded themselves with a type of moral superiority that makes their cause more “righteous” and gives them the attitude that their side must win at all costs, even if it means taxing us all into oblivion to pay for their environmental protections. Thus, in the end, if that brand of government takes over, environmental laws that are not business friendly will be passed ad nauseum, and they will feel perfectly justified in doing so, because they are protecting the earth, for all of us
Regarding the Times cover, my main offense is that the symbol of Iwo Jima has been co-opted by a movement that most of us Dollardites consider to be a joke/scam/lie/pick your obscenity. Those WWII vets died for a very real cause - the freedom of the world from Nazi/Jap tyranny, not some make-believe bullshit.
April 18th, 2008 at 7:22 pmI understand the outrage that some have with TIME magazine using the Iwo Jima Flag raising. However, the greatest discourse appears to be “Global Warming”, myth or factual.
April 21st, 2008 at 8:03 amApproximately 98% (I understand) scientist agreed that Global Warming is a problem and that problem is caused by us(people world wide). Roughly 2% of the scientist (those that in most cases are being paid by the largest polluters) say it isn’t. I don’t know which is true, but I think I would hang my hat on the 98%. Others opinion, that it is just a theory. Yes, that is true, but gravity is also a theory, so is evolution. But look at the hard facts - Approximately 23,483 people die of starvation, each and every day in this world, and most of that number is below the age of 5. So I guess we are willing to allow 8,457,295 people to die of starvation than face the problem. We can add all of the deaths in all the battles that have been fought, and they would not equal the number of people that have starved over the last 5 years. What symbol would you use to jar the people of this country into action.
