Iraqi PM: Reconciliation Has Succeeded
Can you see my smile? Someone send this story to the Democrats…hehehe
BAGHDAD - Iraq’s prime minister says national reconciliation efforts have broken new ground and all political blocs have agreed to return to the Shiite-led government.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s optimistic remarks Thursday come a week after lawmakers with Iraq’s main Sunni Muslim political bloc said the group has agreed in principle to return to the government nearly nine months after quitting the Cabinet.
A statement from al-Maliki’s office quotes him as saying that “national reconciliation has proved a success and all political blocs will return to the government.”
A return of the Sunnis would be a boost to al-Maliki. But the main bloc the National Accordance Front has not made a formal announcement.

And from VOI:
Baghdad, April24, (VOI) Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Thursday said all parliamentary blocs granted him a mandate by their support to the security measures taken by the government to reine in militias and to clamp down on violence, PM office said in a statement.
“National reconciliation has succeeded and all parliamentary blocs granted the suuport and approval to the measures taken by the government”, PM office statement cited Nouri al-Maliki speaking in meeting withUK foreign minister David Miliband, who arrived in Iraq in anannounced visit.
The UK FM arrived in Baghdad, meeting Iraq PM to discuss security issues and the opportunities of British companies in Iraq.
“All political factions would return to the governmen”,PM Maliki pointed out, adding “the equation of a militia versus a militia has ended and the weapons have been exclusively at the hands of the government”.
Al-Maliki termed the situation in south Iraq as “stable”, vowing “to normalise the situation in Mosul and some of Baghdad areas”.
The southern port city of Basra saw heavy clashes between Iraqi troops and militiamen loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr following the announcement of a major crackdown dubbed as Saulat al-Fursan(Knights’ Assault) on gunmen last month by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
The Sadrists considered the offensive as aiming at weakening the power of their movement ahead of the provincial elections due in October.
The clashes spread to Baghdad and major southern cities, but violence was halted after al-Sadr’s call to his loyalists to put off weapons from street.
For his side, FM Miliband reiterated “his country’s cooperation with Iraq especially in sectors of investment along with supporting development and reconstruction projects in the south of Iraq”.
Last December, UKFM visited Iraq and met top officials to assess the security situaion in the violence-ridden country.
