You know what pisses me off the most about Olbermann and his ilk? They describe soldiers as children and victims. My son is no child and he is not a victim. He enlisted in the Army as the 3rd ID rolled across the berm between Kuwait and Iraq in 2003. He volunteered to be 11B – infantry. He volunteered to be a paratrooper. He volunteered to be a Ranger. That is four times he consciously made the decision to be a high caliber trigger puller. He didn’t do it out naiveté either. I was an infantryman and I was a paratrooper. I spent four years on active duty and ten years in the reserve components. My son grew up hearing, knowing and understanding what it means to be a member of the “poor, bloody infantry.”

In fact, I told him if he wanted to serve, consider the Coast Guard and I told him why. I told him as a grunt he would spend many nights sleeping with his head in the mud. He would torture his body and torture his mind. He would be called upon to kill and men would try desperately to kill him. He went anyway.

He sailed through basic, AIT, jump school and RIP. He did is first tour in Iraq as a “shitbird”, a member of a Ranger Battalion who has not been to Ranger School. That meant that, in addition to his combat duties, he got all the shit details such as doing the laundry for his squad. When he returned from that tour, he sailed through Ranger School and was soon promoted to sergeant E-5.

This man is not a child and he is not a victim. He is a warrior who made his own decision with open eyes. He enlisted in a time of war to serve in the most elite infantry regiment in the world. He knew what he was doing and he did it knowing the potential consequences. Nobody “sent” him to Iraq, he volunteered. He could have gone to college; I would have paid for it. He could have got a job, I would have arranged it. He wanted to serve. He wasn’t “sent to Iraq to die”, either. He wasn’t sent and he didn’t go to die. He volunteered and he went to serve his country.

When Olberman and his ilk refer to men like my son as children, he exhibits a profound combination of arrogance and stupidity. When he refers to men like my son as victims, he denies them credit for volunteering, serving and fighting of their own volition. These men deserve respect for volunteering to do the work most would be terrified of. They aren’t victims, they are warriors. Olbermann wants to strip them their status as warriors and diminish them to poor, hapless victims. It makes me sick.

There have been times that I have been outraged by various members of the media; this isn’t one of them. Much as I find Olby contemptible, he is here merely showing what a supreme pack of dunces he believes his audience to be. He may be an asshole, but to deliver such a tirade filled with foundationless hot air, all I can say is that Keith Olberman should pack up and move to Hollywood. His rhetoric is without reason and his passion without purpose. This little delivery of his is one tiny step above dropping his pants and farting on TV.

Thanks for saying what I think every day! My daughter and son-in-law served 5 tours between the two of them and Joe is heading back with his reserve unit. They are both college educated and not the idiots that John Kerry and Stephen King portray. It sickens me when I hear these talking ass wipes take swipes at our military. If they were in some other country they wouldn’t be able to spout out this garbage. The impression I’ve gotten in a place as liberal as this, is that people regard them as being very brave and capable. If that’s true here, then it’s probably true everywhere else in the country.

Mind you, I’m not talking about the asshole population of the city (aging hippies and activist college students), I’m just speaking about the average person who works for a living.
