Baghdad, May 16, (VOI) – Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said he would pardon gunmen in the province of Ninewa if they handed over their medium and heavy arms to security authorities or tribal chiefs in their areas in 10 days’ time.

“We have decided to grant clemency to members of armed groups in return for handing over their medium and heavy weapons to the security agencies or tribal chiefs in their areas within a period of 10 days,” according to a statement by Maliki’s office as received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).

“Later instructions would be issued on the mechanisms to hand over weapons,” the statement read.

Earlier on Friday two members of parliament from the Sunni Iraqi Accordance Front said they had asked the government to pardon the repentant gunmen detained during the course of Operation Umm al-Rabiain and respect human rights of civilians in the province of Ninewa.

“We have asked the prime minister to issue a general pardon for the misled or repentant gunmen and he promised to do that,” IAF lawmaker Nour al-Din al-Hayali told VOI by telephone from the city of Mosul, where he arrived on Thursday.

An IAF delegation of five members had arrived on Mosul on Thursday night to back the government in its operation launched in the city, watch the government agencies’ performance and meet local residents.

The delegation met with Premier Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi defense minister and the Ninewa operations commander to be briefed on recent developments.

Operation Umm al-Rabiain is an offshoot of Operation Za’eer al-Assad (Lion’s Roar), launched by the Iraqi government on Saturday to track down gunmen of al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq.

The IAF occupies 44 seats in the 275-seat Iraqi parliament, making the third largest bloc after the Shiite Unified Iraqi Coalition (UIC)’s 83 seats and the Kurdistan Coalition (KC)’s 55 seats. The IAF, which represents the Sunni Muslims in the Shiite-led government, has five ministries.

The GOI is now strong enough to talk and act tough. Sorry Harry Reid, you lost, Iran lost, Syria lost and al-Qaida lost, the US military beat them all.

    Fuck him.
