Flying Fish In Japan Sets New Record Of 45 Seconds
I grew up in Hawaii and during the summers of 79, 80, & 81 I worked on a sport fishing boat. We’d go out for Marlin (Striped & Pac Blue), Ono (Wahoo), Mahi Mahi (Dorado), Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna), and a few others. Seen some huge sharks in my time and once we brought in a 1,008 lb Pacific Blue Marlin.
When we finally got him alongside the boat Alan, the Captain, always had what we call a “Bang-stick” ready, just a long pole with a .38 bullet you sort of screw into the tip, just bang it against the head of the fish and the bullet fires.
Alan said “Fuck that!” ran below deck, grabbed his .30-30 and emptied that fucker. That moment is forever etched in my mind, this old Japanese guy jumping up on the gunwale (gunnel) screaming at this 15 foot long monster as he cocked and fired cocked and fired…We couldn’t get it into the boat so we used hand gaffs and secured it to the back and towed her home. A forklift had to drag it up the boat ramp.
Said all that to say, we would see flying fish all the time. Daily. Most cool. Most cool.
Lookinig at this video, I realized that I had not seen a flying fish since the 80’s.
That’s amazing! I didn’t know they could stay out of the water for that long…
