Picture Of The Day: NY’s Brooklyn Bridge Is 125 Years Old Today
Happy Birthday …
A hell of a lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into creating this American marvel.
You have seen good times …
Peaceful Times …
And bad times.
History is a hard load to carry. But it’s all water under you … Thank You.
and what an awesome bridge it is.

May 22nd, 2008 at 8:42 pmI strongly recommend to any Dollard readers who might visit the city that they put their walking shoes on and stroll the entire length of the bridge. Bring your camera, and also allow yourself some time to really look at what several centuries of experiments in engineering and human endeavor can do, just from the vantage point of the center of the bridge.
Your heart will likely break when you can’t help but notice the hole in the skyline at the southwestern end of Manhattan. Wish I could say you’ll be alright, but that feeling’s going to linger for a few days at least.
At the same time, though, you will feel exhilarated by the sheer volume of the structure you’re standing on, it’s intelligent utility, and the craftsmanship that went into its construction. Do it. You won’t regret it. And you won’t be alone! Watch out for the cyclists!
I have a large, beautifully framed color picture of the span, taken from the Brooklyn side, that shows the Twins and the Woolworth building in the background, a shot taken at dusk, the natural light kind of pinkish/purplish. It shows human achievement writ large, just as it should be.
I have a love/hate relationship with NYC, probably because I work there five days a week. I sometimes despise the noise, the constant rush of people, and the inevitable nonsense any place with that many human beings thrown together to eke out a living is bound to have. But I love the efforts, the dreams, the ambitions, the loves, and the hopes that have been realized over centuries by millions of people in that one small place.
Stand out on that bridge and all of it will wash right over you. You’ll be glad to be alive.
