Church organizations are more than capable of making a mockery of themselves without the help of the State. I left a very loosely organized denomination for an Orthodox Anglican faith because I got tired of the "doctrine of the month club" but I know with certainty that men are fallible and the less you put in the hands of "Men" the better off you are and Governments are nothing more than "Men" making decisions for you. However, I feel that genuine Christian faith is stronger and more deeply felt in the U.S. I really wish the US could have the best of both worlds, state recognized national religion and the religious individualism that the reformation and revivalism has brought to the US. However today the protestant tradition has been crowded by catholic immigration (Italian/Irish/polish/south American) and the rise of secularism/atheism/agnosticism/unitarianism. As a prot i don't know how to feel about this country anymore. The new world is a new world indeed, my ancestors did not prepare me for this melting pot. Iran or Europe perhaps? The separation of church and state is the reason my grandfather came to this country. Not saying that we should ignore/marginalize the importance of the Judeo-Christian ethic on the formation of our Constitution and society.
