true, the problem is that our “education nationale” still insists to make us learn english, spanish, german… with litterature texts, not with the every-day language ; so when we go abroad, it takes timme to understand and respond to the people. (It took me 2 months in England, while 15 days in Italy)

July 9th, 2008 at 3:24 pmThis a recurrent meme that continually cheeses me off. In Europe you may be no more than 30 minutes from a different country that speaks a different language. In the time it takes to travel from New York to Miami you could have potentially travelled through England, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Germany and Italy. Maybe you would have made it all the way down to Greece. They all speak different languages. That is the reason they must learn to speak multiple languages at a young age. That and so they can find a job in an English speaking country when their economies collapse under the weight of socialist entitlements.
This will be another distraction in our schools as the mandate from the NEA will soon be to force kids to learn four languages so they can cut back on teaching reading, writing, arithmetic, and history. You know, the subjects they need to learn in order to get a good job.
