Almost makes you empathize with McCain’s position on illegal immigration: reluctance to deport aliens married to service members.

My God, Vietnam was a hellhole.

I know very little about my father’s combat experience over there, but I do know a few things. He arrived in-country in time for the Cambodian Incursion, serving as a platoon leader in C Co./5th Bn./12th Infantry/199th Light Bde. (his first brigade C.O. was KIA in that very action). He received 3 Bronze Stars (along with a Valor Device(s) (I forget how many)), a Purple Heart, an Air Medal, and numerous other ribbons, badges, and decorations. I know that one of the Bronze Star citations was for recovering American KIA in the face of enemy resistance. Before he was seriously wounded by a .45, he was acting company commander.

Is it any surprise why we (’we’ being all good and decent Americans) hold our military in such high regard? We unlike our European counterparts, have never lived under a military dictatorship. This is but one reason why I don’t feel we need to take after the Europeans, but vice versa; they’ve shown far more poor judgment than we ever have.

Good for McCain for sincerely recognizing a true American hero, I doubt Obama ever could.

We are weaker with his passing but stronger with the knowledge of his example.

The Battalion Commander came in about 0400 and had me come into his office to help with some of his T/A-50 when I noticed the inscribed photo of President Reagan hanging the Medal of Honor around the neck of Sgt Benavidez.

I froze. I asked the BC if he knew Sgt Benavidez and he answered in the affirmative with a smile that quickly faded.
He then went into the story and related what he’d seen.

I was there all night and into the morning because I had been forgotten and pulled the whole shift myself
Things like that happen for a reason.

It is neither strange nor funny behavior, but the behavior of someone deeply proud and respectful of your country and True American Heroes. Hooah..

That is a great story, one that we should tell our children at bedtime. Looks like ten years ago we lost a very good one.

You know I met a couple of CMH recipients and the mildest manner guys you would ever want to meet. It is as if some deep down devotion awakens the hero inside them, while they only feel that they have done what anyone else would do. They seem to only want to remember their fallen comrades in arms rather than accept any praise at all. Befitting for the highest honor in the land.

I choose Benavidez’s story as an example of what one man can do if he is committed not only to an ideal but to preparing for the eventual challenging of that ideal.

After I read the story I asked the group where they think the story came from. They al thought Hollywood. Wehn they found out it was a real guy you should have seen their faces.
