There are clips on UT of his visit to Letterman during pre-2000 election where he says the very same thing. The left (MSM & DNC) all to easily avoids even mentioning this.

Nobody listened to Bush in 2001 because gas was still around $1.50/gallon, and it was easy for the enviro-whacko-leftists to shout conservatives down on the issue. Now they have been exposed as the self-centered America-haters they are, and I feel their influence will be diminishing as the majority of America turns against them.
