great shot, can’t prevent me of thinking that most of these german soldiers never came home
though I don’t understand why there is a celtic music sound track here, ok, for the rythm ; a bavarian march would have been more appropriated
also we can’t see many russian typical face in the soviet army ; Stalin preferred to employ his provincial mongols as tank meat
August 8th, 2008 at 11:09 amI bet there is still a lot of film and photos from WWII that still have not been released to the public. Funny how color adds another dimension to the war vs black and white film.
August 8th, 2008 at 11:34 amProbably filmed by Goebbels’ henchmen. I’d guess almost everyone shown alive in that film died in the war - people trapped in a gargantuan collision of Evil versus Evil.

August 8th, 2008 at 2:17 pmHe had to. After the invasion the Germans captured or killed Russians by the thousands. Whole divisions were wiped out.
I met some Russian emigres/legal. One Russian woman summed up the Russians perfectly.

Stunning film. Color somehow makes it seem more real. You can see the youth in the soldiers, especially the dead ones. War is fought by kids for the most part.

BTW, some really interesting footage from WWII here lately.
August 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pmThe fact of the matter is that Operation Barbarossa was the Greatest invasion in the History of the world.
Stalin had over 300 divisions on the Eastern borders. What would you do? I mean really. THAT is a real threat. Not a maybe he has mobile labs.
The embarrasment is that we got involved and helped the Soviets.
The Germans would have defeated them in Oct 1942. The reality is that the US and British aid of tanks, trucks and supplies kept that bum Stalin alive.
The front stretched from the Arctic Circle to the Black Sea to the Georgian mountains. The logistics alone are mind boggling. Especially 65 years ago. Amazing.

More like 190 divisions versus the Axis 166, but the Axis had about a 30% numerical superiority in manpower. The USSR had superior numbers of tanks and aircraft, and some of them were even technically superior to the German equipment (e.g. the T-34). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Barbarossa
