U.S. Destroyer Heads To Georgia, U.S. General On The Ground In Capital
Let’s just see if the Russians try to keep our destroyer and its crew out of port…
From Defense News:
WASHINGTON - The guided-missile destroyer McFaul departed from Crete on Aug. 20 loaded with humanitarian relief supplies for war-torn Georgia, a U.S. defense official said.
“It’s going into the Black Sea, and the intent is for it to be able to deliver those (supplies) in the next week,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
“This is intended to be for humanitarian purposes,” the defense official said.
“The ships will transport thousands of blankets, hygiene items, baby food and infant supplies to save lives and alleviate human suffering,” U.S. European Command said.
Sending the warship into the Black Sea, albeit on a humanitarian mission, would mark the first projection of armed U.S. military power into the region since the start of the conflict between Russia and Georgia on Aug. 7.
The U.S. military has delivered humanitarian aid since last week aboard unarmed military transport planes.
The McFaul will be joined by the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Dallas, which is taking on supplies in Souda Bay, Crete and is scheduled to depart in a few days for the Black Sea, the defense official said.
The Mount Whitney, the flagship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet, also was ready to go if ordered but at this point was not going, the official said.
Meanwhile, a team of U.S. European Command, led by Army Brig. Gen. John Miller, is already in Tbilisi “to assess the current humanitarian situation and make recommendations on continued humanitarian support to senior military leadership.”
“The EUCOM team will conduct a deliberate and focused assessment, encompassing variables such as transportation, infrastructure, manpower and many other life support considerations,” the U.S. European Command said.
I’ve been waiting for this move since I read about the russkies blocking of Georgia’s port. This run will reveal a lot about the resolve of putin.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:24 amThey should send a fast attack sub along with it. Out of sight, of course.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:35 amWho says there isn’t one ghosting along under the McFaul during it’s transit?
August 21st, 2008 at 10:42 amI wonder how many “aid workers” got off those planes and were replaced by others when the planes left…..You know we have “eyes on” in theater.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:57 amThis is gonna be an interesting play… A mush bigger and more “edge of your seat” play then the Giants “Helmet Catch”…
Wish I could be there.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:12 amWouldn’t mind seeing a CVBG or two follow.
August 21st, 2008 at 11:55 amWho ever said there isn’t one of our subs in the Black Sea to begin with?
August 21st, 2008 at 11:59 amI would have put a carrier group in the Black Sea just like we sent to aid the stricken tsunami victims. Bullies back down quickly when confronted by real force.
August 21st, 2008 at 12:12 pmI’ve been wondering just what the activity level is like at Incirlik Air Base, they are well within range of Georgia.
August 21st, 2008 at 12:30 pmThis is exactly what the Virginia class subs were created for.
August 21st, 2008 at 12:32 pmWadda ya gonna do now Vladdy?…should be interesting.
I’m w/Gandalf…and I’ll bet that there already is a “presence” under those waves
August 21st, 2008 at 12:53 pmMove straight in on the “blocked port” in Georgia and if the ruskies don’t move then tie a rope around thier sails and pull them out to sea and sink them!!! Raptors and subs everywhere KGB assholes oh, Bush get ready for an attack on Poland–be ready!
August 21st, 2008 at 1:42 pmIt’s all over but the crying. The Coast Guard is on the way. Those lovable lugs using buoys like bazookas and breaking hearts along the way. Get some Puddle Pirates.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:33 pmSEMPER PARATUS
Not sure why the US is doing things this way. They have got to be sending military supplies along with them also.
August 21st, 2008 at 2:51 pmWhy not use Turkey to send supplies.
If I were General, what I send. Antitank weapons.
The subs are there so is the air support just below the horizon/lol
August 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pmThe problem, the Georgians jumped in with both feet to help us in Iraq, we owe them, a debt of blood, period.
Putin on the other side is just like any good kgb ace, schizo about the rodina/little mother russia/been attack again.
The question: How long before putin uses tac-nukes if he feels threaten??????
Will we answer in kind????
Those forces doing the assault where too efficient and professional;
maybe some para’s and some spetz’s and some chenchen mercs
points to ponder
George C. Scott as Patton: “This where we hold them by the nose and kick them in the ass”
Launch strike against Iranian nuke sites now while everyone is focused on Georgia! Better yet have Georgia play host to the IAF to shorten their route and refueling woes…. Putin will have a heart attack! LOL
Poland and Ukraine … Go to DEFCON 2
August 21st, 2008 at 4:31 pmI think this is a perfect time to reactivate our Iowa class Battleships. Show them Russians how to blockade a fucking port.
Can we bomb them, now?
