I feel its time all these musicians start to understand that just because their POLITICAL views are different doesn’t mean that their music is not being heard and BOUGHT by MILLIONS of republican and conservative listeners who could care LESS about the what “Entertainers Political Views” are…
I thought we were all Americans?Wired

September 5, 2008

The female-fronted band Heart has issued a statement denouncing John McCain’s use of their ‘77 hit song “Barracuda” after he accepted the Republican nomination for president on Thursday night. Apparently, vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s nickname on the high school basketball was “barracuda,” so McCain’s use of the song was meant as a reference to that.

But Heart is crying foul.

“I feel completely f—ed over,” said Heart’s Nancy Wilson to Entertainment Weekly, adding later with her sister and bandmate Ann Wilson via email, “Sarah Palin’s views and values in no way represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late ’70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”

This is getting downright weird. It seems like each day another band issues another statement that John McCain is using their music without permission. First Jackson Browne sued McCain for using “Running on Empty,” then it was Van Halen’s turn to hassle him for his use of “Right Now.”

Now, Heart is broken up about yet another of McCain’s musical missteps. The way things are going, it’s clear that the guy needs to start vetting his music a bit more carefully. Is Ted Nugent available? Or maybe ABBA?

Well there is a limit with band’s political views. I might listen to War, even though it’s an antiwar song about nam. But I refuse to listen to Rage Against.

  2. ROB

On another note. I say they play heart at every speech.

And if they make a fuss about it lock them up for treason after McCain is elected. Afteral, that’s what Obama’ll do with people who openly oppose his “Divine Nature”

  3. drillanwr (Today I am an Alaskan!)

You know, when they pumped this song out in the hockey arena last night while Palin and Mac strolled down the runway I thought, “Yeah, they know THIS is the only time they’ll get to use it … So they are milking it the fuck for all it’s worth … The “FOUL” call will be coming in the morning … HEH!!!”

    Predictable …

So, aside from marrying a movie maker guy, Nancy, what have you done lately for your career … and BIG sister Ann too? Show up to play your same old (but still great) music from the late 70s and early 80s …

I met the girls in 79-80 when I was doing my internship at a Cleveland progressive rock station. They were so fucking cool. Loved their music and female front guitar. Ann’s voice was so damn strong and wonderful.

You could have let this one ride, girls, as Sammy Hagar has, and raked in a few more bucks and radio play from a whole new audience of folks … But as libs always do when they try to handle [weapons] … you’ve shot yourself in the foot.

Somebody call Uncle Ted Nugent … I want Palin’s song to be Cat Scratch Fever or Wango Tango …

Bitter aging feminist hags are the ugliest … No?

  4. DC

    Who cares?

    Heart sucks wang anyway!

  5. Atom&Yves

Hey Mac, how about, “Fuck All You Liberal Pussies” by, Me?
I’m Atom&Yves, and I authorize McCain’s use of this song.

  6. tedders

Is that picture of Ozzy Osborne and his daughter?

  7. jack douglas

This is their second bite at the apple, let have their 15 min. in the spotlight and then shut the f#@k up and sit down.

  8. NickD

    boo fuckin’ hoo.

Bring on Uncle Ted, maybe some Kid Rock and Toby Keith too! I doubt they’ll have any issues with them.

  9. Steady

The Wilson girls are PATHETIC!!! What a joke.

  10. Clutch250f

You know why doesn’t he use The Right Brothers’s songs? Great conservative rock band. Use the Song “Shut Up and Teach, or Bush Was Right” that’ll piss off the liberals. I’m offended that she’s offended! I’m gonna sue Heart! Who’s with me?

  11. Steady

The Wilson girls are PATHETIC!!! What a joke. :???:

  12. AFITGrad 86

So long as they get paid the royalty for play over the air what’s the big deal?

Shut up and take the check idiots! It’s not like you’re overwhelmed with offers to do concerts and such!

  13. mjm

Would Ann and Nancy have complained if Obama used the song? I am 58 years old and have been a huge fan since Heart began. They are one of my favorite bands. I am also voting for McCain. Does Heart want me to stop listening to their music too?

  18. Texas Mom (Sarah Palin Rocks)

    And Ann Wilson, too.

    Fck U All.

  19. Hardball1911

Ann and Nancy Wilson have both been shitbags for years now. One is a fat disgusting hate filled bitch, and the other is just a hate filled bitch.

Never could stand them anyway. It takes more than 3 chords and spiffy guitar riffs from a mindless drugged out sack of shit to actually make music worth its weight on a cassette. “Magic Man”? Yeah, that’s a message we need to send to our kids. “Let’s get high, be a whore, and give up that ass as young as you can.” Have you listened to the lyrics?

Trust me, it isn’t a loss at all. I am quite happy that they don’t want to be involved on our side of the aisle.

  20. Steve in NC

heart? that music truly sucks, repetitive and unpolished

It droned on in the background last night, I thought it would never end.

I didn’t even listen to that sh*t in my youth when I was completely toasted or whatever you kids call it today.

    (CAPT-DAX)

got a taste for hogging do you?

  22. Jon

It was a public performance and perfectly legal as long as the RNC paid a licensing fee to BMI, ASCAP, SESAC. Nancy, go on home and cry yerself ta sleep on yer huuuuuuuge pillah! I’m a music producer and I approved this message (and I used to work in Licensing at BMI).

ProgRock, ugh. Well, everyone has to get a start somewhere I suppose.

N.B. Sammy Hagar isn’t a typical, leftist idiot rockstar. He donated $2000 to GWB’s campaign in 2004 http://www.newsmeat.com/celebrity_political_donations/Sammy_Hagar.php ; he might be better considered more independent/libertarian. He also is closely associated with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA). His major hit “I Can’t Drive 55″ and the track “VOA” are two patriotic rock songs, if you ask me.

  24. Mike in CA

    Those bitches.

    Uncle Ted, Stranglehold.

Call John Rich, I’m sure he’d even bring the Scotch.

  25. deathstar

    Dude looks like a lady

  26. Gman

Be nice to the Wilson sisters! Lifes been very hard for them lately.

Everytime Anne goes to the shore the Marine Rescue folks tow her out to sea. Nancy has to swim out, wave down a tug and get her sister winched up on the barge and brought back to land. It’s cost her thousands of dollars. That would make anyone crabby.

  27. RJI

    Hogs…Who cares????????????Baracuda THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. jaybear

and HOW long has it been since Heart had a hit song???

irrelevant has been rockers…..they should count their blessings that anyone still considers them worthy enough of that kind of exposure.

    I never liked them anyway….

  40. AZ Patriot (Merchant of Death)

Here is an interview of Uncle Ted at this years shot show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaNv80opy8s it’s always just amazing to listen to this great American.

  41. dmkamenski@gmail.com

maybe they should buy a tug boat with the royalty checks,
maybe that will put a smile on their scum eating faces saving rental fees

  42. Elvistheslug

Just one more reason I don’t support Phoneywood movies and haven’t bought a music CD in 12 years. Maybe if we stop supporting these morons they’ll get the freaking picture

  43. monkeysdad (Sur Tejas Gringo)

Didn’t I see Gretchen Wilson perform after Palin’s speach? I bet she would have loved to have “Redneck Woman” used as bumper.

  44. drillanwr (Today I am an Alaskan!)

    Anderson

Actually, in the 70s-80s we didn’t call it “progressive”, we called it Alternative Rock.

    That’s what I meant.

  45. AmericanJarhead

    Heart is lame.

I liked their song back when I was in high school but now they are worthless and have proven to be not important in Rock. They are only getting a little Pr out of this. Maybe we ought to just tell the ladies (and I use the term loosely) that they are not only irrelevant, they are either fat or old and both have maggot eaten vaginas.

  46. rightangle

Yeah, Nancy like we didn’t get tired of “Don’t Stop Thinking About Cigarro” back when the Clinton’s were the belle’s of the ball. Should have stayed in the garage if when you “Look What They’ve Done to Your Song” makes you unhappy.

  47. Rock

the best thing is when songs of bands against the war are used for mot-videos of us blowing shit up!

  48. BigTex

Can somebody tell me when the hell these musicians became the moral, political, social gatekeepers of our society?

I’m sick and freaking tired of them all making grandstanding speeches denouncing political opponents for “illegally using their music”. Guess what? NOBODY CARES! :!: :!: :!:

To Jackson Browne, Heart, Van Halen, whoever - GET OVER YOURSELVES BECAUSE NOBODY GIVES A GREASY BUCKET OF CRAP WHAT YOU THINK!!!

  49. maltboy

I guess the rumors weren’t true. I had heard that Nancy Wilson choked to death on a small baby someone accidentally left at a Chinese buffet, and Ann died in a tragic mudslide that occurred when she stayed in the sun too long and her makeup melted.

  50. CPLViper

Fuck Heart … I say they switch the campaign song to “Let The Bodies Hit The Floor” by Drowning Pool.

“Sarah Palin’s views and values in no way represent us as American women.” - Ann Wilson

That’s presumptuous and condescending. I think we’ll find out exactly who she represents in November.

McCain should just get John Rich and others to right songs for him.

Shame there isn’t a song out there about mountain lions, also known as cougars.

Debunked, the campaign paid for the rights to use the song
