Rare 1941 Color US Navy Aircraft USS Enterprise San Diego
Old color shots of rare US Navy aircraft aboard USS Enterprise and around the San Diego area. Filmed for the 1941 movie “Dive Bomber”. Scarce aircraft such as the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator, Curtiss SBC-4 Helldiver and the Vought SB2U Vindicator are shown. It was during the filming that the US Navy was changing the paint schemes on aircraft from the colorful pre-war to the overall gray. Several planes were kept in the old patterns while the movie was filmed. Aircraft in the movie were clearly from USS Saratoga (Air Group 3) and from USS Enterprise (Air Group 6)….a very nice view of the Grumman F3F biplane fighter 6-F-4….. The best parts of the movie were just the aircraft shots. Video clips assembled by Greg Clarke.
Thanks for posting this I was just being nostalgic over on youtube watching videos of my favorite wwii navy aircraft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrA0S5US_Vk

September 5th, 2008 at 6:28 amAZ Patriot(Merchant of Death) F4U-1 Corsair I would love to see one of those at a local fly-in…and just to stir things up a little, the Corsair has a 1-0 record against the P-51 in head to head dog-fighting.
It happened during the 1969 “Soccer War in the air” between El Salvador and Honduras. Of course a good pilot makes a good plane great.

You’ve got to get up to Oshkosh some summer for EAA AirVenture (http://www.airventure.org/index.html). There are always lots of warbirds, including the F4U and P51.
Of course, living in the Green Bay area (about an hour from Oshkosh), we kind of take it for granted.

September 5th, 2008 at 10:30 amAtilla Kahuna, I’ve heard great things about Oshkosh esp. at the Arlington (Washington State) Fly-in. A P-51 and Grumman TBF/M were flying then.
Dogbert41. If possible I’ll be planning my next So. Cal trip to be timed with a stop in Reno for those annual Air Races.
I’ve also heard Abbotsford International up near Vancouver B.C. is big as well. Having just checked their schedule (Aug 8-10, 2008) might explain why I saw this flying into Boeing Field back in early August. Remember, Russia was invading Georgia? I know the vid here is 2007, but they were supposed to have one this year as well.
