Pakistan reports 15 killed in attack on military convoy in Swat

Jul 15 01:36 AM US/Eastern

ISLAMABAD, July 15 (AP) - (Kyodo)— Up to 15 people, including 12 paramilitary troops, died Sunday morning when a military convoy was hit by three roadside bombs in Swat, about 150 kilometers northwest of Islamabad in northern Pakistan.

TV channel AAj claimed a suicide bomber rammed his car into a 40- vehicle military convoy in Swat, which has been the venue of a stronghold of the Taliban-like radical group Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariahe Mohammadi.

It said several houses in the vicinity of the attack were also damaged.

Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen, Wahid Arshad told reporters that according to initial details 40 paramilitary troops have been injured, but so far no reports of deaths.

Since Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s spoke Friday night, army and paramilitary troops have been pouring into Swat for an operation against local clerics who have enforced their own Islamic laws in the hilly region.

Twenty-four paramilitary troops were killed Saturday when a suicide bomber rammed his car into a convoy in turbulent North Waziristan tribal agency bordering Afghanistan.

Will johnny edwards pick up the phone and tell these people that there is no global war on terror! That those soldiers are not really dead, that it just a bumper sticker slogan used by the Bush administration to instill fear so that he and his oil buddies can get even richer.

The idiots keep showing their ass.

Godspeed to Musharraf and his troops in this battle.

Perhaps a joint military exercise is in order.. Make the region a bombing range and hold exercises.

I hate seeing any legitiment military being trapped in those narrow valleys and mountain passes, you know that rough terrain stuff. I heard something that doesn’t set to well with me. Did we negotiate away our arsenal of neutron weapons? Do we still have those things or what? They sounded so environmentally friendly. What would be wrong with tossing in some green bombs?

Neutron bombs are basically slow, dirty a-bombs, that fizzle rather than detonate full force. They spew out lotsa slow neutrons which mess up cells and kill stuff. They don’t have a real good shelf life, but wouldn’t be a big problem to whomp up in a hurry if needed. But I think the gamers and analysts have concluded that they escalate without providing much serious advantage.

But I might be wrong. This is an old debate.

I was reading not long ago of a large non-nuclear bomb that DOD wanted to test. It is such a powerful bomb that the people living near the base were warned that it might break windows when it goes off.

DOD, never got a chance to test it, because people living nearby said “no”. Well, here’s a good place to test it.

The other characteristics of this bomb, if I remember is the ability to penetrate deep undergound bunkers.

This info came from news sources. Maybe Drudge, Fox, not sure which.
