Looks like the mortar missed it’s intended target. Looks like it was short. For all you 11C types here’s a link for you: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=16b_1174708176

I demand UN condemnation and that the red cross and amnesty international investigate. You can not shoot at unarmed medevac helicopters (those with a red cross on them). You must abide by the geneva convention and the rules of war. (Oh wait, my bad, the US are the bad guys, not the terrorists, never mind).

it’s pretty unlikely that was a mortar. In order for it to have been one, the insurgents would have had to know exactly where the helo was going to touch down before it even arrived on the scene. Also, most mortars have about 30 seconds of air time before impact, meaning the bad guys would have had to drop their round the instant the helicopter touched down. Also, they’re typically not good with their mortars. They have a few good teams, but mostly their just aiming at American bases in general, not really going to precision strikes.
All of this combines to making pretty certain that this incident wasn’t an indirect fire attack. But hey, I’ve been wrong before.

I couldn’t resist. Ever heard of C-RAM? Here, scope this out:http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=d306b12449
