Maliki addressing regional conference in Istanbul, Turkey

Baghdad, Nov 3, (VOI) – In his speech before the Istanbul conference on Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on Iraq’s neighboring countries to increase their security measures along their borders with Iraq and respect Iraq’s sovereignty.

“Iraq has passed the difficult stage and become more powerful and experienced in fighting terrorism and outlaws. Iraq is now very close to announce its final victory over the terrorist al-Qaeda organization and militias,” Maliki addressed the participants.

Attributing what he described as “the improved security situation in Iraq” to his government’s efforts to establish national reconciliation, Maliki said, “Since we assumed the duties of the leadership of the national unity government, we have been bound and determined to reconstruct our armed forces and reinforce their capabilities to take over security responsibility.”

“We have taken great steps in this direction: We received security responsibilities of eight Iraqi provinces and are ready to take over in other provinces,” Maliki indicated.

“2008 will be a year of economic development, reconstruction and service provision. We have allocated the largest budget in Iraq’s history and we look forward to further cooperation from our neighbors and friends to achieve our goals,” Maliki noted.

Urging Iraq’s neighboring countries to exert more effort and tighten security measures along Iraqi borders to prevent terrorists’ infiltration into the country, the Iraqi premier pushed for “immediate and proper steps to counter terrorism finance.”

Stressing Iraq’s sovereignty, Maliki urged the participants not to side with some Iraqi factions against others or support sectarian conferences, which, he said, would undermine Iraq’s unity and sovereignty.
