Iraq War widow Julie Shumney accepts the Bronze Star with Combat “V” Device for USMC 1st Lt. Dustin Shumney.

Widow Of Bronze Star Hero Marine Scammed Out Of $57,000
By Bashman

1st Lt. Dustin Shumney was a devout Catholic, dedicated officer, family man, and Iraq War hero.

His widow Julie, and their three children Jordan, 15; Mallory, 11; Conner, 6 were awarded the Bronze Star with the Combat ‘V’ device on August 4, 2005 as a result of his heroic actions in Fallujah, Iraq while serving as the commander of 2nd platoon, Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team for Hawaii based 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force.

2
1st Lt. Dustin Shumney, hero.

He led his men fearlessly into Fallujah in November of 2004. Shumney’s confidence, proficiency and warfighting spirit made a positive impact on his platoon’s ability to fight.

And fight they did. Few men have ever exercised the type of bravery exhibited by Shumney and his men. From throwing live enemy grenades that landed at his feet back at the enemy, to leading his men through dangerous minefields, to clearing houses filled with suicidal insurgents, all the while under sporadic mortar, RPG, and small arms fire.

Articles have been written. Heroes have been recognized. Medals have been awarded.

Many posthumously.

Lt. Shumney died on Jan. 26, 2005, when the CH-53E Sea Stallion helicopter he and his men were using for transport crashed due to a sandstorm about 200 miles from Baghdad near Ar Rutbah, Iraq killing all on board. Approximately 30 Marines and one sailor perished in the crash making it one of the deadliest days for U.S. troops since the initial invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

On that day, Julie Shumney became a widow, and the three children she and Dustin had lovingly brought into the world, Jordan, Mallory, and Conner, became fatherless.

One of the most noble things a person can do, is to help widows and orphans during their “time of trouble.“

The harshness of the reality that her soulmate would never walk through their front door again and take her in his arms, the emptiness that Daddy would never again tuck them into their beds, kiss them goodnight and chase away the boogeymen; the knowledge that he would never be there to lead, guide, play with, and love their children again, is a time of trouble no decent person would ever wish upon any other.

In times like those, friends and family should come together, band around the widow and the fatherless, and give them aid and comfort.

4
The Bronze Star, when awarded for bravery, it is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces.

This is the tale of two men who preyed upon this widow and her fatherless children, in their time of trouble, and bilked them out of $57,000.

Arguably, one of the best ways a person can work through grief is to give oneself to a charitable cause. This is what Julie Shumney did. She held a Bible study at her house with people from her church, and through the course of those weekly meetings she came up with the idea to raise money to give to various Christian outreach programs around the country.

More specifically, a program that would give money to Iraq War widows and orphans. This was especially dear to her. She wanted to help those who would go through what she had been going through.

This is where Julie Shumney’s heart is, to help those truly in need.

“I just was wanting to give back,” Julie said.

Enter Jeff, an evangelist from her church, who also led the weekly Bible study in Julie’s house, he seemed like a nice enough guy. And when the idea to help Iraq War widows and orphans came about, Jeff told Julie about a friend of his named Ken.

Jeff explained that Ken had had some success in an eBay business that revolved around buying truckloads of returned electronics merchandise from national chain stores like Circuit City and Wal-Mart at a greatly reduced price. They go through the items, salvaging what they can and putting them up for sale on eBay.

According to Jeff and Ken, their first investor, a man named Hencer, had fronted them the money needed to get that business going, and Hencer claimed he had received his initial investment back with no problem.

What could go wrong? The nice evangelist guy has a friend with a tried and true method that could help them raise lots of money to give to Iraq War widows and orphans. Her idea was that they would recoup the initial investment and give the profits to the widows and orphans charity, then take that initial investment and buy another truckload of reduced electronics, etc etc…and continue the cycle of charitable giving.

Sounded like a good plan for a good cause.

They drew up a contract. Julie gave them a Cashier’s Check for $40,000 with the stipulation that $5,000 be used to help “start up” the business, and that nobody made any profit off of the venture, that the profits would go to the charities. Contract signed, check handed over, Julie felt good. She felt that she might be able to help make a difference in the lives of those who would be going through one of the worst times of their lives.

Both Jeff and Kenneth had said that the project would be a side thing for them, that they would be volunteering their time with the project in the spirit of giving, and helping the Iraq war widows and orphans.

But soon afterward, things started to go bad. The contract they had signed had mysteriously disappeared. Whenever Julie would call Ken or Jeff to check on how things were going, she would get conflicting stories.

Things weren’t adding up.

But Julie, being a good Christian, believed that because they were also Christians, brothers in the faith, she should give them the benefit of the doubt.

Then one day, Jeff the evangelist came to Julie in tears. He said he was unable to live with himself knowing what he knew and that he was losing sleep, and his conscience was eating away at him.

He told her that Ken had been pocketing the money. That Ken had bought a car for his wife with it, that he had been making his own house payments with it, that he had been simply spending it as if it were his own money. Jeff went on to tell Julie that he himself had been unfaithful with the funds, paying for an expensive school for his own son, as well as numerous other personal bills.

Julie said “Well, let’s go get my electronics from your garage then. They belong to me.”

Jeff agreed. But Jeff said that Ken was a dangerous person with a criminal background. That there was no telling what he would do if he was confronted with his wrongdoing. So they decided initially, to not tell Ken that Jeff had informed Julie of the deception. Instead they took the merchandise, rented a warehouse, and moved it there. Then, Jeff told Ken that he was no longer part of the project.

Jeff then told Julie they needed to buy another smaller truckload of electronics to try and help recoup her losses, and Julie reluctantly agreed on the condition that she send the money directly to the company that was selling the truckload of electronics, and she did that.

The Shumney Family.

Jeff brought in a man named Brandon, who was supposedly an honest guy, to help.

Soon after they started operating, Jeff said that Paypal kept shutting them down and they didn’t know why. Jeff gave Julie some excuse about eBay, which she found hard to believe. Julie knew it was time to just shut it down. Brandon came to her and told her that things with Jeff were “not as they seemed.”

Julie ended recouping only $7,000 of her $57,000 investment. Ken had threatened her if she tried to come after him for her money back. Apparently these two guys run some ministry called John G. Lake.org.

I talked to Julie on the phone this afternoon. Her income, which was supposed to be from an annuity is gone because she had to liquidate the annuity. She is having a hard time making ends meet.

She wants to pursue the matter legally, but that also takes money that she doesn’t have.

An Iraq War Hero’s widow and fatherless children need your help.

Update from Julie on the legal situation: “Dustin had recently passed away, and I had three kids, and was emotionally not stable and felt unable to go through a whole court proceeding, but more importantly, they had threatened my life and my children. And now I’m now I’m told that the stature of limitations has passed. I’m willing to take legal action if still able, if that isn’t correct. ”

    What happened to these assholes? What church were they a part of? Julie, if you read the whole Bible you will see that Christ is a warrior who fights for the right thing and for the Father’s purpose. That’s what got Christ killed. Stop being naive about mainstream Christianity and get the police involved in your fight before you start paying lawyers. If these men are licensed through a church, go after the church.

  2. Ranger

    Let’s find these scumbags and deliver some Texas justice.

  3. Jeanet

    :evil: , f*cking bastards.

    Bashman,

    They’re running a story at Blackfive about the Marine who got his car damaged by a moonbat-twit.

    It ended in the best way possible, the judge being a Marine :mrgreen:

    But, before it got to court, that whole story got blogged by many with enourmous positive results of help and back-up.

    I’ll do some mailing right away.

  4. mindy abraham

    What a scuzzbag :mad: :evil: and i would like to know what “church” he works for. I’m jewish, but even I know it’s un christian to take advantage of a war widow.

  5. Goodbye Natalie

    Seems like we ought to be able to help in this manner. As a Christian, there is nothing I hate worse than somebody smearing the name of Christianity to do evil. To make manners worse, they did it to a widow who just happens to have a husband that died for our cause. I can’t think of a lower scumbag crime - this ranking with pedophiles. Let’s get some names and cities of these jerks.

    When some scumbag ambulance chaser keyed a marine’s car, thousands went after him. This is 10 times worse. Time to hunt down this group of three thieves and get Julie’s money back with interest. And if these thieves can’t pay the money back in full immediately, I recommend we put them on the Chase Credit Card plan. Julie will be paid back with about 18% annual interest on a monthly basis. And if they stop payment for any reason, then I recommend a flogging, followed by the sale of their personal assets starting with that car that was purchased.

    They better hope they can pay quickly and they better pray they decide to pay in full with an apology and a smile on their face.

    Has someone contacted 1/3?

    I’m sure that they would be very interested to hear that the widow of one of their fallen has been bilked.

    “Ken had threatened her if she tried to come after him for her money back. Apparently these two guys run some ministry called John G. Lake.org.”

    This “ministry” is easy to find and I’m sure there are people who live in Texas who are going to read this. The best thing we could do is spread the word and some former Marines need to pay Ken a visit and see if the threatens them. He needs to be “persuaded” to give the money back, perhaps in a lonely parking lot somewhere when he is returning to his car.

    If you read their website they are running some “healing” minstry and “training” people to do healings. As a Christian and medical professional I have a real problem with scam artists like this and would like to see them taken down. If they were really doing this for Christ they would be helping people for free and certainly not bilking a widow of her money. These guys do not represent Christianity, their con artists.

    I feel very bad for this young family and I think this is probably more common than we think. I do have a few questions. 1) Have the police been contacted? 2) I’m pretty sure she still receives DIC and Social Security. Is she able to make it month to month? 3) If she made this type of decision shouldn’t someone supervise her money management so she doesn’t end up in the same situation in the future?

    Police,yes, Marines, yes….the local church should also have a system in place to deal with members who go against church doctrine.Defrauding widows and orphans is not likely church doctrine.(Unless these fellows ARE the church leadership.) Some denominations call it shunning, some call excommunication, but all have a method of dealing with something of this nature. I’d like to hear whether or not her pastor and elders are involved in helping her get justice and supporting her family too.

    what church does Julie Shumney attend, is it directly involved with John G. Lake.org and is it (http://www.jglm2.atomicshops.com/John_G_Lake_Ministries.html)

    is Jeff, Ken, and Brandon directly involved with these churches

    where are locations of affiliates of these churches located at

    what is jeff and ken’s full names, do they have a my space or something that we can gain information on them or location

    is this church doing anything about this

  22. Phil N Blanx

    I don’t do PayPal either but in this case I’m definitely into ‘payback’. Bash - Get us some more information from Julie on how to track down these two low-lifes. Julie - Call the police ASAP. Some of Dustin’s brother marines need to visit these wolves disguised as sheep and make it REAL clear to them how dangerous it would be for them should they consider hassling Julie or her children in any way, shape or form. One other great option for Julie is to get in touch with the Marine Law Enforcement Foundation - http://www.mc-lef.org/
    I’m sure they will be of great service to Julie and the children.
    Please keep us updated Bash.

  25. RENO

    xray is right, I cant find them either and it will take more info to resolve.

    Julie Shumney would be the the closest link to them. Get on it Bash and either post it here or send to my email which should show up on your end with my post, if it does not let me know here and I will post it.

    xray is probably thinking what I am because he was looking for the location too.

    Ranger is obviously pissed. You live in Texas?

    Robbie is only about 4h from Dallas.

    I am only 4hr from Dallas.

    1/3 is probably busy fighting the war on terror, so maybe Ranger, xray and I could form a collecive bargaining unit and negotiate a settlement.

    I am very serious. Is anyone else serious or just venting?

  26. Tim Porter

    I am a retired police officer and I know for a fact that her local police department or the State Police will have a criminal fraud unit which is set up specifically to investigate and prosecute these kinds of cases. She should call the police now and start the investigation. She will prevail.

  33. Klei

    Horrible… My prayers are with Julie…

    To the best of my research, the statute of limitations for fraud in the state of Texas is four years, so she should still be able to take legal action against these two cretins if we can scrape up some start-up legal fees for her…

  34. TRA

    I was directed here from michellemalkin.com and am quite eager to help out a war widow in need. However, in order not to be taken advantage of, I would first need to see a police report OR some proof that Mrs. Shumney cannot press charges at this point.

    Her update, “Dustin had recently passed away, and I had three kids, and was emotionally not stable and felt unable to go through a whole court proceeding, but more importantly, they had threatened my life and my children. And now I’m now I’m told that the stature of limitations has passed. I’m willing to take legal action if still able, if that isn’t correct,” needs some bolstering. She can easily find an attorney to give her a free initial consultation, and should do so before expecting people to believe her story and send her money.
    Let’s see her either a)file a police report, post it on this website, and actively press charges or b)show that she has verified that the statute of limitations has expired and she can’t. Then I’ll send in my contribution.

    To Craig (the infidel),

    I am happy to read your comment about informing 2nd Plt. 1/3 Charlie.

    ~~~~~~~~
    After reading Bashman´s post this morning (Dutch time), I commented I would start mailing some peeps.
    I´m thrilled to see it worked, seeing some blogs (amongst them Michelle Malkin) already have picked up this story.
    Sorry, this was all I could do.
    (Right now I´m in the middel of lots of work, preparing for 2 funerals for comming wendsday and thursday. Lost 2 young soldiers due to “friendly fire”. After the first soldier got hit, the second one jumped in to help his colleague, only to get killed as well. Such a tragedy.. :cry:)
    I´ll be around now and then for a quick peek but not 100% active ´till comming friday.
    So folks, let´s kick some ass and achieve that sollicitors will sue these 2 scumbags pro bono, lots of people will donate to Julie and that once again the honourful legacy of being a Marine will emerge. (No man left behind, nor it´s widow being left sucked out of here lifesavings by douchebags.)
    Will RTB now.
    Sincerely yours,
    Jeanet
    From the dates that her husband died, he could have been one of the guys who went over to Iraq on my former ship– the USS Essex.
    The Captain and XO are two very good folks who might be able to get some kind of a fund-drive going– we joke a lot about our Marines, but they are OUR MARINES and no scumbag slime can just abuse their widows and get away with it.
    http://www.essex.navy.mil/Index.htm is the ship’s address.
    When you’ve convinced them it’s not in their best interests to threaten or harm the family, then you can turn them over to the authorities. I suspect a jury will not treat them kindly.
    OK, this type of fraud is as old as snake oil, probably older. The civil statute of limitations may have passed (I’m not sure) but criminal fraud statute is different. The authorities need to come down hard on these guys, especially if they are using a church to front for their fraud. The IRS would be interested, too. I am so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Schumney.     Just got home, checked in an saw the last comments on the subject. I promissed myself to get some decent sleep, regarding the sad work I’m doing these days. But I got so angry, can’t get to sleep anymore.
    First, thank you for deleating the comment from carolynp. She went to far and had me make this comment:
    ________________
    Forgive me for getting rude, just read my last entry if you want to now why. But I feel the need to clear up a few things, also being responsible for other blogs picking up this story and, the results, those bloggers commenting here.
    Listen up folks - those who are commenting here after your attention was caught by Julie’s story somewhere else on the net, not being a close “follower of the Dollardian-world” on a regular base:
    It was Bashman who came up with the “whole story”. But, it was Pat who got in contact with Julie shortly before Christmas because of some pictures Pat still had and on which Julie’s killed husband was portayed. That’s when Julie told her story to Pat.
    With Pat still recovering from a retina-rupture and heavy surgery afterwards, it is Bashman who is bringing Julie’s story to our attention “in the full” after Pat alredy mentioning it in “Deep Thoughts”.Right now Pat is too tied up with doctors-orders and other extremely important issues. (E.g. wrapping up the “Young Americans”-documentary and more very important stuff.) Seems to me he has enough on his mind while Bashman is working his but of too, keeping this site “on the sharp edge” in the way we, The Dollardians, are used to. (No puns intended here.)
    I don’t want any one to impose anything negative on the person “Julie Shumner”, ‘cause, if Pat snifs out something nasty, you’re not on his list, you’d be already crushed underneath his boots.
    Short:
    If a story like this one is brought to you on Pat Dollard’s YA, it’s legitimit. End of story!
    I can very well relate to certain thoughts.(Is this story for real? Is Julie also responsible herself, why didn’t she go to the police? etc.) But we don’t know all the “in’s and out’s”, simply, because we were not in Julie’s shoes around the time this happened. One thing I can tell you from my own experiences;
    If you are a good and honest person just to get litterly robed from your savings because of some frauds, you’re life is upside down. You feel guilty too, ‘cause your family is stricken as well. (In more then one way, being black-mailed not to take action with the lives of your kids on stacke.) You just can’t think clear, you’re numb. And Julie had already lost her dearly loved husband when all she wanted was doing some good, as a tribute to her fallen loved-one. Just imagine how you would feel, being left in a situation like this.
    It’s okay to pay thorough investigation into a mather when a donation is asked. No one wants to steal money out of your pocket. Making a donation is a FREE choise, but please, commenting with the negative attitude towards Julie I read a few times, as if she is a fraud herself and stumbling about her not taking enough action in the mather is, considering the circumstanses, NOT DONE.
    Same goes for the well-understandable “research about” and thoughts of “taking some action against” the two frauds involved in this dirty play. This too is NOT DONE. Remember;“Innocent ‘till proven guilty!”
    Let alone, you could harm some one not being part of it, just being associated and by coincidense with the same names. But, more worse, it will do more HARM to Julie, her children and her case then good will come out of it. Please, take a deep breath, count ‘till ten and restain yourselves. I can totaly inderstand your feelings, but in the end it will harm Julie and her family even more!
    Julie’s story is about:
    Informing the readers about a tragic loss witch turned from a “tribute” into a sheer nightmare.
    Appealing to those who can actually help, e.g. sollocitors, private-investigators and lawyers who might want to put some outstanding work in it, in order to get the scumbags in front of a judge without Julie having to pay up hefty sums of money. (She just can’t!!!)
    And, if you feel like it, donate some money or offer some other good help. (I already read some good advice.)
    It’s not about;
    Throwing even more sault in Julie’s open wounds. (Not to mention, those of the children.)
    Do a follow up by beating up some folks who maybe in the end aren’t even responsible.
    Let stay civil about this. Don’t act as if you’ve emerged from the middel ages AND, don’t talk down on people who have already lost so much, now nibbling at their last credability. (Feels to me like kicking an already beaten up dog, chained to a wall.)
    Once again, if I was rude? I appologize. It’s so frustrating to see that good intentions sometimes backfire with only more negativity. That isn’t what I hoped for.
    Pleace, stay human, stay civil, reach into yourselve, asking “what if it had happened to me” and then…… do the right thing. (And I don’t mean, slowly starting up a smear-campagne, nor following others advice blindly.)
    Just THINK!!!
    Getting some shut-eye now for a few hours. Hoping things will change for the better here.
    Sincerly,
    Jeanet from The Netherlands.
    I”m in Irving, if there’s anything anyone wants me to do.
    And I”m not including a beating in the above, not that I couldn’t but I wouldn’t.. :-)
    If anyone needs some surveillance, photos, video maybe, those things I can do. I have a bit of time on my hands.
    I’m a child of the ’60s and ’70s, ashamed and embarrassed that I chose not to serve because I believed all the crap the media were flinging at the time.. but getting older and fatter, I got wiser too..
    So thanks to every serviceman and woman, present and former, and Julie, I know what it’s like to suddenly lose the one you love.. a lotta prayers are headed your way…
    Somebody find a physical location and I’ll get you pictures so you can be sure of who these people are or are not.
    And proceed from there, civilly and with the calm that comes from being right. :-))
    Ask the Dollards for my email, cuz I hereby authorize them to give it to you. :-) But I won’t put it here in the open for sensible reasons.
    God bless Dustin Shumney and all those who volunteer and take a risk I cannot imagine, just so I can be free in this country. It’s beyond “thank you”.. there are no words for it… :-)
    To Tom, who made the ignorant comment about “evangelists” above:
    Why do you hate, son? Maybe you didn’t notice, but a lot of good people, including Christians, are banding together to do something for this war widow and her kids, and you have to throw your slimey hate right in the middle of it.
    For your information (not that it matters to a hater like you) a “Christian” is, by precise definition, a follower of Jesus Christ, and adheres to His teachings. Therefore, if someone calling himself a “Christian” does something like rob from a war widow, you can be sure that are NOT Christians. Got it?
    And, if any person calling himself a “Christian evangelist” is doing anything other than “evangelizing” (spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ,) you may be sure he is neither a Christian nor an evangelist. And I don’t care whether the scammers run some of the biggest TV churches in America (they do,) they are NOT Christians, by definition, and are NOT evangelists.
    I’ve tried to explain this simply, as I would to about a seven year-old kid, hoping you might learn something. Any questions? Go peddle your hate somewhere else, please.
    Master Chief Petty Officer, U.S.N. (Ret.)
    It looks to me like Mrs. Schumney has 4 years in Texas to file against them for fraud, if fraud is what it is. It sure sounds like it if he was using the money on his personal affairs, but I’m no lawyer though.
    Tried to find out about Kenneth Waters’ criminal history (to see if it is just part of the scam or not), but had no luck, other than that he’s never been in federal prison.
    I hope someone has a photo of the guy in case he tries to skip town and run this scam on some other poor soul.
  57. Sandy
    Hello Julie,
    I noticed throughout the day that the commenting here at Dollard Nation had slowed down. (I could not comment until I got home from work.) I am more than sure it is because of how moved everyone has been about what happened to you and your family and they are doing everything they can to get help for your family and resources.
    You have a tremendous amount of heart to be reaching out to others after the loss of your husband, Dustin. I cannot imagine what you and your children have gone through. I will keep you all in my prayers and send you what I can when I am able. It is very distressing to know that the people who were involved in stealing this money from you are hiding behind a Christian organization or church of any kind. Those involved must be stopped before they do this again. I am also very glad that Pat Dollard and Bashman have brought this issue into the news. Your story will hit every mil-blog.
    The dirtbags that took advantage of you in your grief, stole the money from your family, and threatened the lives of you and your children will not get away with it. There is a whole band of people organizing now to get your family some justice in this situation. Eventually they will have to answer for this crime according to the law.
    God bless your husband, Dustin, may he rest in peace. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten by any of us.
    God bless you and your children, Jordan, Mallory, and Conner. You all will remain in my prayers.
    Julie,
    My wife and I were at the Marine Metroplex meeting that day in O5 before I went to Iraq when they presented the Bronze Star to you. I worked with Ben King as well at the time. please email me, I would like to help “Talk” to these guys and let them know what they are up against.
    Just to be clear, there are two things that need doing.
    One is the Christian thing, helping someone from the club out whose family is in need.
    The other is the American thing, bringing criminals to justice, or if needed, justice to criminals.
    Shining daylight on the situation provides factual and actionable information so the system can do its job, and others can be kept from being hurt. We just need to ensure there is clear and accurate information. Full names, locations and dates would be very helpful. Then you bring in the professionals.
  60. Julie Shumney
    Hello fellow brothers and sisters,
    I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support, to be honest it is quite embarrassing that this actually happened to me! Being that I consider myself to be quite on top of things and these types of things “NEVER” happen to me! lol Well I guess never say never. I am very thankful this is in Gods hands and he will come through I know, with out an ounce of doubt. The Shumney’s thank you! OORAH!
    Have you ever seen a snow globe? You know the glass ball with a scence and snow in it.
    That is the best way I can describe what my soul felt like for a year and a half after loosing my husband. It was like someone had taken me and shook me, everything was foggy yet warm, like I was a puppet going through the motions. God was definately there, oh my was he ever. The holy spirit was with my kids and I every moment of everyday for at least a year. Then as I grew stronger the snow started to stop falling and the fog started to clear. I became stronger and stronger and all my kids and I wanted to do was give back to God! God had been so good to us, when you feel the holy spirit upon you, you are a candle with a bright flame ready to do nothing but fall to your knees and serve the Lord by serving his people. The greatest gift you can give is your time! That is what my kids and I did for a year we traveled to various places and served the Lord, I thought these guys from church were on the same page as I was on. Unfortunately not!
    I only want justice. I am a Godly woman, not a pitbull! God has been so good to my kids and I, I had turned this all over to him to deal with at the time because I was scared and emotionally unable. I thought as a christian that is what I was supposed to do. Until now finding out that doesnt apply to widows and children of the father less. I want the guys brought to justice and I want to be at peace with it. With everyones help I may just get there.
    I will contact my congressman, friend of mine and speak with him to see what can be done.
    Thank you for all of your support!
    Julie Shumney
    OK - I am not an atty (blah, blah, blah) but I am a former Texas peace officer and I hope this info helps.
    Mesquite is in Dallas County. Here is a link to the official Dallas County criminal conviction database:
    http://www.dallascounty.org/pars2/#
    Searches are free (even though it says something about paying - ignore that - and these are the county records, but you may need more information on these clowns (approximate age) because there are several “Jeff Randalls” and “Kenneth Walters”. You’ll need to get the document that explains disposition codes - follow the link.
    You can also do a search on the Texas Dept. of Public Safety Website for Texas criminal convictions. Each search is three dollars and you have to use a credit card and give some of your information:
    https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/dps_web/Portal/index.aspx
    JULIE - GO TO THE POLICE or Texas Rangers (there is a DPS office in Garland, Texas with Rangers in it - they may send you back the locals, but if this goes over more than one county, you might start with DPS). There is no amount of pressure that you can put on these yo-yos more than that of a pending felony theft charge. It appears you are DEFINITELY a victim of fraud/theft under the Texas Penal Code. Let the police investigate them for the criminal part and then when all the facts are out, sue em and take what’s left.
    Put this in your browser; it is the Texas Penal Code. Read Chapter 31.03 (THEFT) and related definitions. It appears you have a third degree felony theft (by deception).
    http://tlo2.tlc.state.tx.us/statutes/pe.toc.htm
    Since the raw text may be confusing as heck, the relevant parts of excerpted below:
    FROM THE TEXAS PENAL CODE:
    § 31.03. THEFT. (a) A person commits an offense if he
    unlawfully appropriates property with intent to deprive the owner of property.
    (b) Appropriation of property is unlawful if:
    (1) it is without the owner’s effective consent;
    NOW, these definitions explain what each word in that statute means (taken from TPC 31.01):
    § 31.01. DEFINITIONS. In this chapter:
    (1) “Deception” means: (A) creating or confirming by words or conduct a false impression of law or fact that is likely to affect the judgment of another in the transaction, and that the actor does not believe to be true;
    (B) failing to correct a false impression of law or fact that is likely to affect the judgment of another in the transaction, that the actor previously created or confirmed by words or conduct, and that the actor does not now believe to be true;
    (C) preventing another from acquiring information likely to affect his judgment in the transaction;…… or
    (E) promising performance that is likely to affect the judgment of another in the transaction and that the actor does not intend to perform or knows will not be performed, except that failure to perform the promise in issue without other evidence of intent or knowledge is not sufficient proof that the actor did not intend to perform or knew the promise would not be performed.
    (2) “Deprive” means:
    (A) to withhold property from the owner
    permanently or for so extended a period of time that a major portion of the value or enjoyment of the property is lost to the owner;
    (B) to restore property only upon payment of
    reward or other compensation; or
    (C) to dispose of property in a manner that makes recovery of the property by the owner unlikely.
    (3) “Effective consent” includes consent by a person
    legally authorized to act for the owner. Consent is not effective if: (A) induced by deception or coercion; ……..
    (4) “Appropriate” means: (A) to bring about a transfer or purported transfer of title to or other nonpossessory interest in property, whether to the actor or another; or
    (B) to acquire or otherwise exercise control over
    property other than real property.
    (5) “Property” means: (A) real property; (B) tangible or intangible personal property including anything severed from land; or (C) a document, including money, that represents
    or embodies anything of value.
    I came here from Michelle Malkin’s blog and I hope this helps. By the way, I am a Christian myself - these guys are con-men, not Christians. God will judge them as well for this someday.
    Pat,
    I didn’t read all the comments but there is a org called Liberty Law in Georgia. Here’s the site. They’re excellent and do pro bono especially for things like this:http://www.lc.org/ PO Box 540774, Orlando, FL 32854. Telephone: 800-671-1776. Email:
    When I was saved about 25 years ago–as a business man–I learned EARLY ENOUGH: don’t do business with a (most) Christians. Most of them have Democratic/socialis attitudes and some are scum bags like these sewer crap.
  65. JJIrons
    I’ll put my 5′10″ 245 frame (yes, it’s in very good shape!) in a room with the three of them simultaneously and I’ll beat the last friggin’ cent out of them. I AM a Christian and I can tell you that what these barf piles did is nothing short of sin. Dear Lord people, do NOT think that these thieves represent Christ or Christianity. The Bible says that you will “know them by their fruit” and these three are criminals.
    To the dear lady Julie, I am very sorry for your loss of your great husband and this event is something that you need to pursue legally. Your family deserves it. It is not right to let evil go unpunished. These three stooges need to be held accountable. Surely there are Godly men in your area that will support you and stand with you through this until justice is done. This absolutely fries my wires. I could hardly read the article without seeing stars and flashes of anger. Go get em’ girl!! Go get em’! We can’t do it for you but we will support you! God bless you and your children.
  66. Mark Tanberg
    Julie
    I would not want all the above coming after me. These folks are awesome.
    Lying is the original sin, it caused the fall and has opposed the truth ever since. But it’s God that these guys should fear, this is from Matthew 18:5-7 (you and your kids would be that child)
    5″And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;
    6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
    7″Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
    Yours in Christ
    Mark
  67. Xray
    Wow, missed “bulldog drummond”’s info based posting earlier. Your name fits you bulldog :)
    Julie, what “Another guy named Kevin” posted is spot on. Now for the hard part, going forward to the authorities as a crime victim (if you haven’t already). When a case is established, use the pro bono resources to press a civil claim as well. They can take quick action to lock up an accused’s assets. Probably the last thing you want to do after all you have been through, but it is necessary and right.
    Should other actions and protections be needed, beyond the financial assistance, there are many, many who would answer that call and help out. Your family is not alone, it is a part of this much larger whole of current and former service members and families. God bless.
    Careful you might want to check to see if your response in business is biblical.
    If Christians would only train as if they were in the corps.
    none of this would need to be discussed.
    This is a very sad situation, but I don’t think giving money over the internet is a good solution right now. Hopefully, Mrs. Shumney has a church body who can help her financially, especially since they would be in a better position to analyze her situation. As a Marine wife, I know there is a lot of money given to widows, and it’s hard to understand how all of it could be gone in two and-a-half years. (We’re talking at least $400K here, folks, assuming he had SGLI, like any good Marine would. The amount of money she received was probably far greater than that, even. And surely she is receiving Social Security for her children.) This is just a bit sketchy… My heart is with this family, and shame on the men who preyed on a serviceman’s widow.
  74. Curry R. Blake
    Greetings:
    I am Curry R. Blake, I am the General Overseer of John G. Lake Ministries.
    I have just been informed of this situation.
    I do know parts of it are true.
    The “Jeff” in the story is Jeffrey Brent Randle, he is currently in the Dallas County Jail.
    He worked as a web designer and graphics artist for us for a while.
    I fired him about 3 weeks ago when we noticed irregularities in our online store page.
    He was arrested for a probation violation.
    Felony Injury to a child.
    Jeff is also under suspicion for knocking out my wife’s car’s window on New Years Eve.
    “Ken” is Kenneth Waters, Kenneth and his family attended our church in Mesquite.
    The story I was told by Jeff and Kenneth is that they were in an ebay business with “Julie” and the business went
    under due to mismanagement on Julie’s part.
    Julie contacted me to tell me that Jeff and Ken were representing themselves as John G. Lake Ministries.
    I informed her that they did not represent the ministry.
    Their (Jeff and Ken) association with Julie ended just before I met them. They attended a seminar I held.
    As far as money or cars, etc. Neither of these two ever donated any money to JGLM. Kenneth and Jeff were given cars by people in the church.
    Feel free to contact me with any further questions.
    I too, am a veteran (U.S. Air Force - Security Police Law Enforcement Specialist).
    I am a Christian and would have nothing to do with a situation like this.
    Personally, I agree with the sentiments of the other responders.
    I too, would love to take matters into my own hands, but it appears Jeff may already be reaping what he has sown.
  75. Wm Lawrence
    I hate to sound sceptical, but the standard SGLI policy is now (has been for a couple of years) $400,000. Hard to believe a marine in combat would have opted not to provide max coverage to his family. Even though a $50,000 hit would be terrible she shouldn’t be destitute. What’s the rest of the story?
  76. Larry, Curly & Mohamed
    I hope you all don’t mind but I posted your story on Sean Hannitys site:
    http://forums.hannity.com/showthread.php?t=491741
    I am however not able to post the link to the story due to rules against solicitation of donations.
    I want to help Julie as much as I can. I am also a Marine Wife. I know your pain Julie. Although I have not lost my husband, I have lost friends. I do understand the haze you were in. I hope I can help you. If anything by getting the word out as much as I can.
    My prayers to you and your children. Your story is definitely in the right place here @ Pats site.
    LC&M
  77. Curry R. Blake
    Just to let people know.
    When Jeff went to jail, his wife asked for a divorce.
    She is not staying at the address listed on this blog.
    she and their two children are staying somewhere else.
    Her father, a Lt. with DPS is involved in this situation.
    Regardless of what everyone thinks of the three men involved
    (Jeff, Ken, and Brandon) I don’t think the wives were involved and no children should be involved.)
    Kenneth is also married with four small children.
    I hope Julie will follow through with legal action.
    The “church” referred to was not a JGLM church.
    It was the First Baptist Church of Sunnyvale (from
    what I gather).
  78. MrSpkr
    Just read about this. Julie, I am a licensed Texas attorney practicing in the Dallas area and would be willing to talk to you about your options, at your convenience. Contact me via email at MrSpkr [at] aircanopy [dot] net (or click the link at my anemic, inactive website).
    Also, to those who would bring physical violence to these creatures, I would urge some restraint. The last thing the Shumney family needs is for these things to claim that Julie was urging people to harm them.
    Just my $0.02 worth.
  79. Michael A. Davis
    As an active member and one of the leaders at my church, I have to say that while reading the article, my stomach started feeling like I had swallowed a pint of sour milk. Nothing gets me feeling worse than when a person uses their Christianity as a scam device!
    The church needs to be notified of this! Talk with the Pastor of the church. Believe me, he will want to know. Then get the word out!
    Also, here is a Psalm that is written by King David, when he was wronged by someone who was near and dear to him, resulting in David losing everything he had! Let his words be yours…
    Psalm 7:6-11
    6 Rise up, LORD, in Your anger; lift Yourself up against the fury of my adversaries; awake for me;You have ordained a judgment.
    7 Let the assembly of peoples gather around You; take Your seat on high over it.
    8 The LORD judges the peoples; vindicate me, LORD, according to my righteousness and my integrity.
    9 Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. The One who examines the thoughts and emotions is a righteous God.
    10 My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart.
    11 God is a righteous judge, and a God who executes justice every day.
    Translation: You got a mighty power in your corner - use it!
  80. Philip L Hickman (Hicky)
    Julie, I am so sorry for everything that has happened to you,I have dedicated my Life to Helping others and know how these things can happen,but Please don’t Let it make you bitter,we are so blessed in spite of all the setbacks we may endure! You are in my prayers, God bless, Hicky
  81. rosignol
    Hoo boy.
    I’d talk to an actual lawyer. And the police. Preferably a lawyer and policeman who are prior service- they can probably come up with something nail these jackasses on. Do not assume the statute of limitations is past.
    I’d also file liens on their property.
  82. Julie Shumney
    I am absolutely disgusted, Curry Blake you need to stop and think about the lies you just typed. I would worry about what God is going to allow happen to you posting the lies on this web site about the sitsuation.
    My acctant and I have proof, we have a spread sheet showing where money went to JGLM! Paint, projector etc… those are just to name a few. You stated Jeff is in jail, I guess he is reaping.
    You also left out the part when I called you and said Curry Blake the bible says not to take your brothern to court, but to go to the pastor of the church to resolve the matter between christians. So I did, I called you and you told me you did not want anything to do with the matter. I quoted you what the bible says and you went to speak with Jeff and Kenneth, you called me back and told me, they said it is a matter between you and them and for me to stay out of it.
    That is what you said and that is what took place, I have phone records showing where I called you on your personal phone. I told you, you have two criminals that are members of your church. You did nothing, nothing about it.
    Yes, I am pressing charges, I am strong boy am I strong enough to take this head on, with God guiding the way I can do anything!
    I also have a witness that was there by my side and heard every conversation that took place between Jeff, Kenneth and I.
    I will pray for you today Curry Blake as spiritually you are gonna need it.
  83. Julie Shumney
    Hi AnnieB wilh all respect you just made an excuse for these people to steal from my children and I. My husband died for that money and wether I had 800,000 or no money which is what I have is no money, it doesnt matter you dont steal from a man and family that layed down his life for that money. Stealing, is stealing. The church offered me money in the beginning but I did not take, do to the fact I had received money from the military and felt it was not the right thing to do, did not need it at the time.
    Respectfully
    Julie
  84. T Double Dash
    I thought the whole thing sounded kind of fishy from the start. Don’t listen to me though, I have issues with trusting people.
  85. Julie Shumney
    Please let God, police and our justice system decide what punishment should come their way. Please do not take matters into your own hands. I saw that someone posted their address, I appreciate how much you care but taking matters into our own hands is not right.
    God can punish them more than anyone on this earth can do, and as it seems Jeff is already in jail, he has a very long criminal record and JGLM lets those kind of people work their, while they are still on probabtion? Crazy
    God will prevail, I just want to say thank you!
    Julie,
    My deepest sympathies and sincere prayers go out to you and your children. The good Lord will see you through this horrible situation. I am glad that you are going to be taking action against these vile men. The behavior of these men are not human let alone Christian.
    I’m back, different schedule than most who posted here.
    Since Julie is pressing charges and one scumbag is in jail (injury of a child, WTF!! although I trust Blake about as far as I could throw him. His posts are a CYA attempt if I ever saw one.)I guess a collective bargaining unit would be counterproductive at this juncture. And I never suggested violence just negotiation.
    Power comes from the assembly of those who believe in the same thing. Violence is the last resort of one who has lost power ( described by Hanna Arendt in “On Violence”).
    Although I think it can be effectivly used to straighten out wrinkles of those who do not subscribe to decency.
    Thanks to all the wrinkle straighters who posted and got the info we needed. A true testament to the power vested here.
    And to xray, Ranger, BulldogDrummond, Frogman, Dave, LtColMitchBell, and JJIrons I like you style!
    First, here is the statute of limitations from the Texas Criminal Code:
    (2) ten years from the date of the commission of the
    offense:
    (A) theft of any estate, real, personal or mixed,
    by an executor, administrator, guardian or trustee, with intent to
    defraud any creditor, heir, legatee, ward, distributee,
    beneficiary or settlor of a trust interested in such estate;
    This is considered an estate because it was money paid due to the death of Julie’s husband.
    Secondly, I have worked with the school that teaches Casualty Affairs for the Air Force. As for SGLI, it isn’t free and they can elect anywhere from $50,000 to $400,000. It’s not really our business how much they got or where it went. Maybe Julie did get more — maybe she invested it for her children’s education. Not our business. Furthermore, the increase to $400,000 was not signed until 5 months after his death and didn’t take affect until 1 September 2005.
    Although I am divorced, I was a military daughter, wife, and am a military mother. We are taught to be independent and not ask for help. I can totally understand Julie’s reluctance to do anything. I won’t even begin to think I can understand her state of mind — I never lost anyone in combat. If Julie doesn’t have an attorney, I believe I can help her find someone to help her pro bono.
    Julie,
    Your interests are not servered by posting on this website. Contact the lawyer as he has offered. Other than thanking people for their help don’t comment here as it may hurt you and your family in the long run. Us ex-service members feel for you like no other but please bite your tongue and don’t post anything until you speak to a lawyer.
    May God bless you and your family.
    Julie -
    I am a bit confused. I apologize for missing something here but I have to ask this, Did you contact the police in this matter? If not I feel it would be a very important step in doing so to proceed further. I believe you and please do not feel ashamed. This can happen to anyone and more then not does. Now that this story has hit the blogs I do feel it would be in your and the children’s best interest to obtain an order of protection against those involved. If anything, just to be on the safe side.
    :?: This comment is for ‘Curry R. Blake ‘…if you so disavow your involvement with these 2 vermin then i suggest you take down their testimonials off your bloody w/site mate,because its a tad hypocritical.If you use their words you should make up for what they have done to Mrs Shumney…here is a link if any doubt of involvement.http://www.jglm2.atomicshops.com/jglmtestimonies.html
    I have no doubt that Messrs Randle & Waters shall be visited one day,probably early dawn around 430am with a not too pleasant surprise…I suggest CRB you DO SOMETHING ve to avoid the ghost of Christmas past..understand my drift.
    :beer: :beer: :beer: to all those who serve,past present & future I raise my glass to your health and safety,cheers,DM.
    Bulldog, looks like they read your post and took your advice. Ken and Jeff’s testimonials have disappeared off of their web site. Cheers!!
    As I said, I don’t do the website stuff.
    As soon as I read your post I called and had it pulled.
    Jeff set up the Myspace for us and locked me out of it.
    I had Jeff was under investigation for possible internet
    fraud. I fired him when I was informed of possible theft.
    I will be following up on this whether Julie does or not.
    Our charges will be more recent.
    I have spent the last 30 years of my life building this ministry on integrity. I may make wrong judgment calls, but they are accidents and certainly not intentional.
    Ex-gay Marine Matthew Sanchez is now featuring this story. We have got to fight the leftists and homosexuals who are anti-military. There are no such a thing as ‘gay’ soldiers. As Matt has written, they wouldn’t enlist because they’ll miss ‘Ugly Betty’, LOL.
    Matt Sanchez has a great book coming out called ‘Gay Jihad’ about how the homosexuals are trying to recruit our kids. This is one of the critical issues of our time - we have got to stop the homosexual agenda!
    Unfortunately, I am not surprised by people using “christianity” as a way to scam people.
    I have found that if someone hands you a business card with a fish on it, or tell you they are a christian as a way of selling their trustworthiness, then they will rip you off MUCH faster than one who does not shove their religious beliefs in your face. The school of thought are two fold: 1) Since I believe in Jesus, I can do wahtever I want and go to heaven.
    2) Since you believe such non-sense as reglion, then I can easliy con you out of your money.
    I really hope this good person Julie is able to get her money back and that these scum bags are put in jail.
    @ LftBhndAgn:
    Thank you for your recent comment.
    I can understand the waves of emotions of people commenting here.
    “We are only human” :wink:
    Blackfive and Drudge report picked up the story as well I just found out.
    I’ll print out your comment and put it in my agenda.
    I’t will be filled between “Nec temere, Nec timide” and “Semper Fi”.
    Every time I crash at the border-line between “staying civilised” and “let me make the scumbags teeth play canasta in his but”, I’ll take a peak at these words:
    MARINES!
    HONOR: INTEGRITY, RESPONSIBILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY
    Just let us hope that especially this will benefit Julie in the most positive way possible.
    I have no idea what kind of money was Julie used to shuffle around, but to write a check for 50 thousands dollars to some guys she’s just met sounds quite disturbing to me.
    A reasonable individual wouldn’t do that if there was only $20 involved …
    How do we know for sure that the FACTS are exactly as presented by Julie? Is she taking some of the blame for being careless?
  101. Mike
    Jeremy,
    What the heck is that bile you are spewing. One has naught to do with the other.
    Ms. Shumney,
    Best of luck to you. Please call a lawyer.
    Mr. Blake,
    You are filth. A benevolent god would strike you down with dick cancer.
  102. David
    If everything she said was true, then my heart goes out to her, but I gotta be honest, She sounds like she is scamming the readers. Her whole story sounds like a giant bag of crap. By the time I got to the bottom of the story I was already thinking I needed to head to Snopes to see if it was a scam…then I saw the Donate button and was like…no way this is real. I certianly hope no one sent her any money yet.
  103. BruthaSoulja
    Hey Jeremy,
    The sickest bastards I see in the news these days are married dudes who kill their wives and/or children because they can’t handle the “straight” life : marriage and children.
    I’d think about that before going after gays especially those that serve honorably in the military fighting and dying for their country.
