7:24 A.M.
Been up all night finishing an episode that has to be delivered today. More brain-dead than usual. Have to finish another one in just a few hours.
12:01 P.M.
Losin my fuckin’ mind here. Havin to spend $500.00 to have someone get on a plane and hand deliver the two episodes by tonight, and I’m still having some technical difficulties getting the second one knocked out. LOL. All I can do is keep on chooglin’…
6:37 P.M.
Sorry for all the non-posting today, y’all, but I’ve been on an edit spree that began last night and will go until tomorrow morning. Should be able to make some contributions on breaks tonight…
8:47 P.M.
I’m making a Goddamn masterpiece. Says me. I don’t know if America is ready for the story of the dedicated, willing warrior with a responsible and mature love for killing. Early in one episode, a Marine who’s face is the embodient of a cheub says, ( he looks twelve, and you can tell this is a good kid with a heart of gold ) he says, “I couln’t really say I believe in killing, but there’s people here who need to be put in the ground. Not a hint of anger, bravado, cuteseyness, or mugging for the camera. Says it just like a straight fact, with a sense of conviction. He looks like everyone’sw neighbor. I wonder if stuff like this is going to surprise and freak some people out. And that’s a mild example of a type and level of human thought and behavior that civilians have no experience with, and are probably just not going to know how to take from this. As Matt warned the world about YA: “Be careful what you wish for”. It’s a study of the darker truths of the world and human nature that people don’t much like to talk about openly, as it is a story of this war. I’m curioser and curioser about how people are going to react. Life and conversations on the precipice of death while being hunted by the devil, are very interesting things indeed. At least to me.
8:59 P.M.
Now keep in mind I’m a no-trained newbie with limited natural talent, so a lot of this is gonna just plain suck, but I think the gold within is going to make it all worthwhile to everyone. I’m filming Marines, for Christ’s sake, that should speak highly of it enough. I still stand by my masterpiece claim, giant flaws and all.
Oh, and June was the last request from Showtime, btw.
9:13
I’ve been awake and working for over 29 hours now, so as far as my last and future posts of the evening go, I can blather whatever I want with legititmate impunity.
9:45 P.M.
This gets posted for one reason and one reason alone - a single lyric: “Stick out your can, I’m the garbage man”. Second runner-up lyric: “Just what you need when your down in the dumps, one-half hillbilly, one-half punk”. And of course, “If you can’t dig me, you can’t dig nothing.” The Cramps were never really a punk band, they were comedians, with a good look for the times, and the ability to make everybody think they were some sort of “untouchable” hipsters. when they were really just a bunch of goofball NY rockabilly nerds. If you’re a good marketer, America is your oyster.
Besides, anybody who writes a song called “I Can’t Find My Mind” deserves some kudos. Anyway, they’ve just always amused me, cos I never took their whole freak rock thing seriously. Always thought it was one of the best entertainment jokes going. And they propped it all up by being really, really good Rockabilly musicians, which is an increasingly lost American genre that could use some attention again.
Hang in there Pat!
February 21st, 2008 at 7:43 amany idea when I should add Showtime to my premium channels?
February 21st, 2008 at 8:15 amI do NOT envy you Pat. When I work on my little home movies it is enough to drive ME nuts. I couldn’t imaging having to work on such a monumental project that you are and have so much red tape and all the other crap that goes along with it. I don’t know how you do it. When all is said & done, you deserve a VERY NICE vacation. YOU worked for it!!!
February 21st, 2008 at 10:02 amThanks Pat. No doubt the finished product will be worth the hassle.
February 21st, 2008 at 12:25 pmSry man. You got it right though. A Master Sergeant once told me(in the midst of spec ops indoc training) “Keep on smiling, keep on driving, it’s all you can do”
February 21st, 2008 at 12:32 pmHey Pat, when do you think we can expect to see YA on Showtime? Any idea yet?
*Can’t wait*
February 21st, 2008 at 12:55 pmHang tough. In the end the results will be amazing and you can rest assured there are many, many folks out here who appreciate what you do and the impact it will make. God’s speed. Damn the torpedoes.
February 21st, 2008 at 1:10 pmPat, Bottom lime…… the truth makes a difference. Hang in their buddy, we want every soldier’s family and the nation to know all.
February 21st, 2008 at 2:06 pmWith all its ups and downs what you will leave will be an inspiration for others and a tribute to all our warriors.
Pat, you are fulfilling your God given destiny.

And THOSE ARE the Marines I know … To the letter, Pat!
This is going to hit a nerve … a might big one.
Masterpiece?
More like the Gold Standard …

February 21st, 2008 at 10:29 pmYou know, I have been wondering about this same subject for along time as well. When I read ” We were one ” I think there was a narrative about a meeting or moto speech or something where a Marine said something to the effect of ” We as Marine’s are trained to deal with situations that would make most people curl up in a ball and cry, or have candle light vigils and seek counseling ”
Is America ready to see a very unfiltered view of war? We’re going to find out…..
Me personally, I am dying to see more of this because I am enlisting in the USMC soon and this has given me better insight as to what I might need to expect then anything else besides books such as We were one, House to House and the like. But those are about Fallujah and this series shows more what the daily grind of patrol’s are like. I always watch that clip where Pat and the Marines are looking for the mortar team and then consequently get mortared….
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 amIf YA is a little rough around the edges from not being professionally polished then all the better, you can polish the soul right out of things.
As you know, people in the military are not col kurtz or gomer pyle, They are simply people.
A couple of truths from Diane Arbus:
“I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn’t photograph them.”
“The thing that’s important to know is that you never know. You’re always sort of feeling your way.”
February 22nd, 2008 at 4:46 am“SOME PEOPLE JUST NEED KILLING” ~ MARINES!
That is one slogan that drives the liberal left nuts!
It is SO TRUE though. I am glad that our guys have no qualms about speaking that truth.
February 22nd, 2008 at 6:03 amThat sort of talk is one of the things I missed about the Corps from the moment I got out. You just can’t talk about that kind of stuff with civilians, even sympathetic/conservative ones, without them recoiling at least a little bit.
February 22nd, 2008 at 6:16 amAmerica isn’t ready to hear it, but fuck it. People are asking for reality, and I look forward to you giving it to them.
While I shy away from asking specific “details” (unless THEY initiate the `kill’ subject) of the Marines I personally know who have been deployed in Iraq more than once, one of them has said calmly, “I didn’t kill anyone who didn’t deserve to die …”
