Islamist ‘Trojan Horse’ In Pentagon
WND:
Federal authorities say a high-level Muslim Pentagon aide, who led a campaign to silence a Pentagon intelligence analyst for taking a hard line against Islam, is running an “influence operation” on behalf of U.S. Muslim groups fronting for the radical Muslim Brotherhood.
Hesham H. Islam, a special assistant to deputy Defense secretary Gordon England, recently criticized Maj. Stephen Coughlin, one of the military’s leading authorities on Islamic war doctrine, for making the connection between the religion of Islam and terrorism.
After Islam lodged complaints, Coughlin’s contract with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon was not renewed.
Islam also was upset with briefings Coughlin recently prepared for the U.S. military warning that major U.S. Muslim groups were fronting for the Muslim Brotherhood, a worldwide jihadist movement based in Egypt.
Islam, who was born and raised in Egypt, is heavily involved with one of the groups – the Islamic Society of North America, which U.S. prosecutors last year named as a member of the U.S. branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and an unindicted co-conspirator in a major terror-funding case.
Islam has persuaded his boss, England, to conduct various outreach with ISNA, including hosting the group’s leaders in the Pentagon and speaking at its annual convention.
Speaking during ISNA’s 2006 opening ceremonies, England proclaimed, “There is no contradiction between the peaceful religion of Islam and America’s values and principles.”
Coughlin reached the opposite conclusion in a 329-page report submitted to the National Defense Intelligence College, in which he warns that Islamic law sanctions violence. That finding, among others, has put him at odds with Islam, whom England describes as “my personal close confidante.”
“I take his advice,” England said, “and I listen to him all the time.”
WND has learned that Islam is closely associated with a Muslim military chaplain trained at a radical Islamic school that federal agents raided after 9/11 in connection with terror-financing.
As WND reported, the chaplain, Abuhena M. Saifulislam, studied Islam at the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences in Virginia.
Recently declassified FBI documents reveal its sister organization, an Islamist think tank known as the International Institute of Islamic Thought, or IIIT, is involved in a Muslim Brotherhood conspiracy to wage a cultural and political jihad to eventually take over America from within – most notably, through infiltration of government agencies.
Islam works closely with Saifulislam (Arabic for “sword of Islam”) on Pentagon outreach projects involving Middle Eastern embassies and the so-called Wahhabi lobby in Washington.
“He’s a Muslim brother,” an FBI official said of Islam. “He’s a bad actor. He’s well-positioned to be where he is, and that doesn’t do us any good.”
He also said Saifulislam is “definitely Muslim Brotherhood,” while noting that Islam “is a lot smoother than Saifulislam,” who as a chaplain at Gitmo lobbied for special meals and other privileges for al-Qaida detainees.
The official hastened to add that, at this point, belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood is not criminal, and neither Defense Department employee is the subject of a formal counterterrorism or counterespionage investigation. Both men have refused interviews, and the Pentagon had no comment.
However, the FBI official warned that the Muslim aides are part of a conspiracy by Muslim Brotherhood fronts to run “influence operations” against the U.S. government.
“Their M.O. is to make nice for the very purpose of penetrating us,” he said, “and we just roll over for them, at least at the top levels.”
He says England, who also recently dedicated an Islamic prayer center at Quantico on the advice of Saifulislam, is blind to the threat.
“England doesn’t know it’s an influence operation that’s been laid at his door,” he said. “His lack of awareness is irresponsible.”
A senior U.S. official who has met with England says he was not even aware that a convicted terrorist and al-Qaida fund-raiser created the Pentagon’s Muslim chaplains corps.
Adurahman Alamoudi, a Muslim Brotherhood leader and founder of the American Muslim Council, placed Muslim chaplains throughout the military. He is now in jail on charges of terrorism. However, most of the chaplains he trained and sponsored are still in their current positions.
“The Islamic chaplains who serve were trained by a known terrorist,” said terrorism expert Steve Emerson.
Emerson says Islam, like Alamoudi, has invited “subversive” elements into U.S. military headquarters.
“Hesham Islam is an Islamist with a pro-Muslim Brotherhood bent who has brought in groups to the Pentagon who have been unindicted co-conspirators,” he said.
Emerson said a “Trojan horse” of subversives and potential spies have penetrated deep inside the Pentagon, and they are now bearing fruit with the ouster of Coughlin. Sources say Islam has high security clearance.
A former Pentagon colleague of Coughlin described Islam as a “gatekeeper,” who at a minimum, is blocking candid discussion of the religious nature of the threat posed by Muslim terrorists. Such action, William Gawthrop says, thwarts the U.S. war effort, because it denies military brass and rank-and-file the information they need to effectively fight the Islamist enemy.
“We still do not have an in-depth understanding of the war-fighting doctrine laid down by (the Muslim prophet) Muhammad, how it might be applied today by an increasing number of Islamic groups, or how it might be countered,” Gawthrop told WND.
He says Coughlin was trying to bridge that gap before being pushed out.
Supporters of the respected contractor say Islam had a direct hand in his firing. They say that on Jan. 3 Coughlin was told his contract, which ends in March, would not be renewed because his message had become too “politically hot.”
They say that in a meeting late last year between Coughlin and a member of England’s staff, which Islam unexpectedly attended, Islam asked Coughlin to “soften his message” regarding Islamic war doctrine. Coughlin refused.
Islam was heard referring to Coughlin as a “Christian zealot with a poison pen.” The conflict resulted in his contract being terminated.
A well-placed Pentagon insider described it differently, however. Islam and Coughlin were present at the briefing, but there was no direct confrontation between the two. It was not until Hesham returned to England’s office suite that he remarked that Coughlin had a “poison pen.”
“He clearly doesn’t like him,” the source told WND.
Also, Coughlin was let go in part because his contract was up, and at $440,000, it was too steep to justify renewing, the insider says. And though he had written a 329-page thesis on the subject, he was not effective at briefing the J-2 intelligence staff of the Joint Chiefs.
“He’s brilliant, and he knows his stuff, but he couldn’t teach it,” the source said. “It went over everybody’s head.”
Still, England has not properly vetted his long-time aide, Islam. “Gordon is so trusting of this guy because he’s worked for him for so long,” the same official said. “But he’s got questionable contacts, and he (England) needs to have his antennae up.”
Use to be in the old days, that membership in a subversive organization disqualified an applicant from getting a clearence or joining the military in any capacity. Why is it that a known member of the Muslim Brotherhood is allowed to get into the Pentagon at all?
I’ll tell you why. It is because the people at the top haven’t a fucking clue about Islam or the threat it poses to our nation and the world.
Here’s the key sentence: “It went over everybody’s head.”
No shit. That’s a fact. Islam is over the these people’s heads because they fail to study the problem and hire more people like Coughlin to disseminate it.
So he’s a bad briefer. So what. Hire someone who isn’t. Purge the Puzzle Palace of enemies of the state like this
Hesham Islam.
Membership in a terrorist orginization or leanings favorable toward enemies that want to kill us, should be grounds for immediate dismissal and/or arrest.
Are we fucking crazy or what? Since when does the Pentagon hire Nazis?
Rehire Counghlin and give him a staff of Islamic experts.
February 2nd, 2008 at 7:30 amDump Sec England while you’re at it. The guy is a clueless briefcase.
So, what the hell is being done about it?
I think all these cock-suckers need to have their asses kicked right off the planet!
February 2nd, 2008 at 7:37 amRobert Spencer needs to put his foot up Englands ass..then maybe he’ll start to understand
February 2nd, 2008 at 8:54 amSecond posting on this Trojan prophalactic. Hopefully the more press this gets the more England will feel keeping this treasonous snake is too “politically hot”. This needs a big national exposure. I can’t believe these bureaucrats are that ignorant. insane.
February 2nd, 2008 at 9:15 amThis kind of stuff makes me so angry . . . our government is so stupid sometimes. It reminds me of the secret prison CIA leak story from last year. This lady (Mary O. McCarthy)was Sandy Burgler’s biggest fan and no one was watching her in the CIA:
From Michelle Malkin:
In a rare occurrence, the CIA fired an officer who acknowledged giving classified information to a reporter, NBC News learned Friday.
The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.
Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA’s inspector general’s office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.
The leak pertained to stories on the CIA’s rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.

AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THIS BITCH WAS NEVER PROSECUTED - SHE IS PROBABLY WORKING FOR HILLARY’S CAMPAIGN RIGHT NOW.
February 2nd, 2008 at 9:16 amIslam was granted which ever level clearance long before 911..so any subversive froup now listed were not categorized … That with the fact a confidential can be granted interim for a long period of time…A confidential or even a TS would not have given him access into compartmentalized material
If it had, eye balls would be on him and he would have been exposed

Islamism and Challenges to Resources for U.S. Strategic Planning Against Jihad
In addition, Steven Emerson of The Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) provided the following comments on this subject on the January 11 FOX News television program “Hannity and Colmes”. The following provides Mr. Emerson’s televised comments on this subject on the FOX News television program (despite numerous efforts by Alan Colmes to interrupt him).
Sean Hannity:
“An Islamic expert at the Pentagon known for his hard stance against radical Islam was recently fired, and now his colleagues want to know why. Stephen Coughlin was fired after a confrontation with one of the Deputy Defense Secretary’s aides, which ended with Coughlin being called ‘a Christian zealot with a pen’. The word from the Pentagon is that Coughlin was fired for fiscal reasons, but supporters of his think there are ulterior motives behind his dismissal.”
[Sean Hannity asks Steve Emerson who Stephen Coughlin was and “what really went on here”.]
Steven Emerson:
“Stephen Coughlin has a background in law and international business and specialty in academic study of Islamic militant doctrine of Jihad. And what he did is to analyze documents, hundred of thousands of documents, which were released during the Hamas, the Holy Land case trial, in Texas. He did an analysis of some of those documents — that were not disputed — which showed that there was a Muslim Brotherhood plan, a secret plan, designed to acquire influence in the U.S., undermine U.S. democracy, and to establish a caliphate. The Muslim Brotherhood plan was spelled out in a document that was introduced at trial. Mr. Coughlin wrote a memo spelling out the implications of these documents, and the profound nature of what would happen if the United States government decided to start doing dialogue and embracing the very organizations that were intent on undermining national security.”
Sean Hannity:
“Was there a point, and this is a point of contention - I know Bill Gertz brought it up in the piece that he put together on this, that he was asked soften his views on Islamic extremism. In other words, they are saying it is about fiscal reasons…”
Steven Emerson:
“That’s a cover. The J2, which is intelligence, said he was an… I can tell you this openly right now - the J2, which is the intelligence wing of the Joint Chiefs, said that he was a political embarrassment. And the reason was because he had offended a top aide to Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, whose aide Hasham Islam, I believe is an Islamist with a pro-Muslim Brotherhood bent, who has brought in groups to the Pentagon who have been unindicted co-conspirators.”
Sean Hannity:
“Let me get the broader picture here. So you believe that this guy is a foremost expert on the issue on the Islamic extremism, in the United States, and because he wouldn’t soften his views, change his opinions or his rhetoric, he is being fired because they are people that are sympathetic — you are making the case — to radical Islam within our own government? Am I understanding that right?”
Steven Emerson:
“Radical Islam… Global civilizational Jihad — that’s a quote from a document released during the trial — has emerged under the guise of different organizations that have penetrated the U.S. government. People don’t want to believe it, but it’s true. And even when these groups claim they are anti-terrorism, they’re not. They have an agenda, they’re subversive… let me just finish… And the fact is that he didn’t have a hard line… all he did was spell out what the agenda was of these groups, and this particular quote… (cut off)
Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “I gotta do… we only have a moment left.. We have a FOX News producer at the Pentagon who is reporting that… uh, we have spoken with people in the Pentagon who are claiming that the Defense Intelligence Agency… they employed Coughlin through a contract and there was Rear Admiral David Dorset, director of intelligence for the Joint Staff, who decided not to renew his contract for fiscal purposes, and it had nothing to do whatsoever with Islam - the person you are fingering as being responsible for his dismissal.”
Steven Emerson:
“You know, they want to have a cover story - that’s the cover story. The reality is a lot different. He was called a Christian extremist, a zealot. He had offended Hasham Islam. He may have offended Gordon England, who has appeared before radical Islamic groups, such as the Islamic Society of North America - we have videotape of this…”
Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “That may be true, but that is not why he was fired… So you are saying that we are being lied to by the Pentagon?”
Steven Emerson:
“This is a cover story. The reality is that his contract was not renewed because of the Islamic penetration of the Pentagon. And that’s a sad reality that has affected also the DHS, the FBI, the Department of… (interrupted)”.
Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “When you say Islamic penetration, are you just talking about one person or are you saying there is widespread penetration of people who want Jihad against the United States working, literally working in the Pentagon?”
Steven Emerson:
“I’d say yes. I am telling you… we know that from the trials of former military members who were brought up on charges of carrying out Jihad. So we know that they trained in the military, number one. Number two, the chaplains who served, the Islamic chaplains who served, were trained by a known terrorist.”
Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “And they want to destroy the United States? These people working internally… like a 5th column in there?”
Steven Emerson:
“You got it. In fact, there was an operation in the late 1980s, called Trojan Horse, by the FBI…”
Alan Colmes:
(Interrupting Steven Emerson) “And the Government is lying to FOX News about it?”
Steven Emerson:
“The government lying to FOX News…? I am shocked, Alan, suddenly you are a believer in the government.”
Alan Colmes:
February 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 am“I didn’t say that, I don’t always believe the government, absolutely not.”
@Jim
The fucking point here is that membership in Hamas or the Muslim Brotherhood IS NOT considered subversive because the damned Pentagon brass are fucking ignorant of the threat that Islam poses.
If there were more people like Counghlin and less like ignorant seat warmers like England in Defense…then Islamics like Islam would be prevented from getting any kind of job anywhere in defense because they would be classified as fucking subversives.
The Puzzle Palace is freaking ignorant.
February 2nd, 2008 at 10:10 amThis is what political correctness gets us. We have every right to scrutinize everybody’s background, particularly if they’re holding a post in a sensitive area such as the Pentagon.
February 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 amThere should be a lawsuit from CAIR against this article in no time…
February 2nd, 2008 at 11:10 amWell Dan I don’t disagree with your points…My point was they may or may not get investigated thoroughly by todays standard because that would be the first place where corruption exists
capiche
February 2nd, 2008 at 11:16 am@Jim:
You sure got a flare for stating the obvious. And I’m still one of the few people in the field who “capiche” this issue better than most….including my bosses.
February 2nd, 2008 at 11:29 amWell Dan I’m usually a little hesitant about writing anything to informed but I do appreciate the compliment
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:03 pmFebruary 2nd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
@Jim
It wasn’t a compliment. That’s what officers politely tell one another when in a briefing or in private that the other officer hasn’t provided any insight or contributed in a significant way to the conversation.
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:29 pmI have always had the impression that Emerson knows his stuff and that makes this scarey stuff, it is. It totally baffles me how blind many have become, or the possiblity that some ‘might’ be turning a blind eye for the purpose of reward in some manner. This is f-ing insane.
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:37 pmThis is so sad its almost funny.
The one guy is named Islam.
The others name means sword of Islam.
Guess they think our government officials are so blind they could just name themselves anything. How about mole, or spy.
Hi Mr. dumb american diplomat my name is Haji Mole and this is my brother Mohammed Spy.
Their actions should tell these officials who they are, but the names say alot in and of themselves.
Hope this is a reverse op being run on these guys cause if it isn’t we are in serious trouble.
February 2nd, 2008 at 12:39 pmThis is what comes up on the asshole when you google him. In my opinion he is a fucking mole and is ensuring those he is truly loyal too get access to the highest levels of our national security. Both he and English need to be fired. And just remember, according to the cult faithful, the koran trumps all man’s laws including the Constitution. So if hesham islam is a truly devote muslim, doesn’t that in fact negate his oath to support and defend the Constitution?
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2007 – If Hesham Islam’s life story was translated into a screenplay — and it’s got all the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster — the director would be hard-pressed to come up with a more compelling chain of events landing him as a top advisor to the deputy defense secretary.
Hesham Islam, special assistant for international affairs to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, spends a rare moment in his Pentagon office. Islam spends most of his time out of the office, building relationships. Photo by Donna Miles
(Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.
The movie would open with Islam as a young boy growing up in Cairo, Egypt, huddling in terror as Israeli bombs came raining down, demolishing much of the building around him and his family.
Next would be the scene of the teenager who moves to Iraq when his Egyptian naval officer father is transferred to help establish the Arabian Gulf naval academy Islam would later attend.
The camera would then close in on a young merchant mariner adrift for three days in the Arabian Sea after an Iranian torpedo sunk his 16,000-ton cargo ship, drowning all but Islam and four of his crewmates.
Next viewers would see the young man, who after corresponding with an American pen-pal for more than three years, dares ask for the photograph that leaves him smitten with his future wife.
The action would shift to the United States, where the new husband, desperate to provide for his family, enlists in the Navy. Later he will be accepted into Officer Candidate School, then ultimately retire 20 years later as a Navy commander.
Today, Islam is drawing on those vast experiences to advise Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England on international affairs.
Although Islam’s life lends itself to high-drama scenes typically seen on the big screen, England sees him more as a behind-the-scenes player with a special talent for bringing other actors together.
Before retiring from the Navy, Islam contributed this skill and his regional and language expertise on the staff of then-Navy Secretary England. Much of Islam’s work focused on U.S. military engagement with the Middle East.
As England moved to the No. 2 Pentagon position, Islam followed, broadening his purview to “the whole globe.”
“He’s my interlocutor,” England said. “He represents me to the international community. He assists me in my own outreach efforts, and he’s extraordinarily good at it.”
Islam is rarely at his Pentagon desk, believing the best way to serve as England’s “man out in town in Washington, D.C.” is to be out and about, building relationships.
“I am a strong believer that there are no relationships between countries,” he said. “Relationships are between people, and those relationships are what bring countries together.”
“It is all about friendships between people,” agreed England, “and you build them one person at a time.”
England calls relationship building “a contact sport.” “You can’t develop friendships unless you actually go out and take the effort to meet people and interact with people,” he said.
As he represents the Defense Department around the country and the around the world, England said, he counts on Islam’s insights and advice. “Hesham helps me understand people’s different perspectives and how they see things,” England said. “He has a cultural background that’s very helpful, but he also works at it very hard to get a better understanding of people and how they think.”
Islam works tirelessly to befriend diplomats from around the world, learning from each about their country, its sensitivities, and its requirements. “I help them understand us, as Americans, and help my boss understand them,” he said. “My goal is to bridge the gap and help people understand each other, even if we are different.”
Not all Islam’s efforts are directed toward other countries. A Muslim, Islam works closely with the Muslim-American community, encouraging its members to integrate into American society and take an active stand with the United States in the war on violent extremism. “This war can’t be won by just Americans,” he said. “It’s a war that has to be fought by Muslims. Islam has been hijacked, and it is time to take it back.”
Islam said he’s proud of the 5,000 Muslims actively supporting that effort in the U.S. military. Among them is his own son, Navy Lt. j.g. Rami Islam, who serves aboard the carrier USS Carl Vinson. “As a parent, I’m very proud that my son is serving this country,” he said.
After growing up in wartime, first in Egypt, then in Iraq, Islam hopes this dialogue can help eliminate differences that can lead to misunderstanding and conflict. “If people talk, people don’t fight. If they talk, they don’t argue,” he said. “I try to bring talking and understanding into the dialogue.”
“Hesham has wonderful friendships and relationships, and therefore he can give me extraordinarily good advice in dealing with countries and people,” England said. “I take his advice, and I listen to him all the time.”
England said he rarely disagrees with Islam’s guidance. “After all,” he said, “if you have a good doctor, you listen to your doctor, right?”
February 2nd, 2008 at 2:54 pmAnother story on the bitch Islam:
From Jihadwatch via the Washington Times”\
Hesham Islam is responsible, according to earlier reports, for the firing of Stephen Coughlin, the Pentagon’s only expert on Islamic law. But now the questions about Islam himself, and what his intentions really are, are increasing.
“Islam probed,” by Bill Gertz in the Washington Times (thanks to Mackie):
The Pentagon is looking into conflicting statements about the background of Hesham Islam, a special assistant to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England who was the focus of a dispute with a Joint Staff counterterrorism analyst.
Mr. Islam faced tough questions about his background posed by veteran journalist Claudia Rosett, a former Wall Street Journal reporter who covered the United Nations oil-for-food scandal with Iraq. Last week, Miss Rosett took the Pentagon to task by uncovering serious discrepancies about the Egyptian-born Islam that no one at the Pentagon seems willing to answer.
Writing in National Review Online, Miss Rosett revealed that certain claims about Mr. Islam’s background don’t fit.
Shortly after she wrote about the discrepancies contained in a Pentagon-written article on Mr. Islam’s background, the Pentagon removed the biography from its Web site, DefenseLink.mil.
Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said “that piece was taken down in an attempt to reduce the rhetoric and the emotion surrounding this issue while we try to determine the facts.”
The Pentagon does not comment on such personnel matters, he noted. “That said, we are looking into the matter and trying to reconcile conflicting statements.”
Mr. Morrell called later to clarify that the conflicting statements being probed relate to whether or not Mr. Islam used the term “Christian zealot with a pen” in describing Mr. Coughlin, and not about discrepancies in Mr. Islam’s background.
Mr. Islam has come under fire from supporters of Stephen Coughlin, the Joint Staff analyst on counterterrorism whose contract was not renewed. The action followed a meeting between Mr. Coughlin and Mr. Islam several weeks ago when the two clashed over Mr. Coughlin’s views on the Islamic law roots of terrorism.
After refusing comment to Inside the Ring, Kevin Wensing, a spokesman for Mr. Islam, now says that reports in this space that Mr. Islam called Mr. Coughlin a “Christian zealot with a pen” did not take place during the meeting.
Queries to other Pentagon officials familiar with the issue said the phrase was used by Mr. Islam after the meeting, not during it.
No action was taken against Mr. Islam, a Muslim adviser and confidant of Mr. England, for the anti-Christian comments.
Mr. Islam could not be reached for comment.
Miss Rosett tried — and failed — to get straight answers from Mr. Wensing about why Mr. Islam claimed that when he was 7 his family was bombed by Israeli jets at his home in Cairo, when there is no evidence the Israelis bombed the Egyptian capital during the 1967 war.
Also, Mr. Wensing could not explain why Mr. Islam said in his biography that he was on a freighter sunk by an Iranian torpedo in the Persian Gulf when there is no record of the ship being sunk.
According to his 1992 master’s thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School, Mr. Islam is highly critical of Israel and the influence of American Jews on U.S. politics, noting that U.S. ties to Israel have harmed relations to other states in the Middle East.
One Pentagon official suggested that any security concerns about Mr. Islam are misguided, noting that someone in his position would have to face a background check.
Yes, and it appears to have been very thorough. (that’s sarcasm)
February 2nd, 2008 at 4:53 pmWow - Thanks for posting that - I will add it to my packet that I am sending my senator on this guy -
My Senator - John Cornyn - He is the only one that I half-way trust . . . I used to like him a lot but he voted with that damn Kay Bailey Hutchison and President Bush to defund/demandate the border fence. So now, I “half-way” trust him.
February 2nd, 2008 at 5:58 pmWell Dan you got it figured out, stay on his ass. Become pro-active and help get this man out of the shadows…
Thats the kind of shit that makes a true Patriot (no-sarcasm, just a hell bent Mother Fucker who does he right thing with enough Ass to back it up!)
