WRAL:

TOLEDO, OH — Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday ordered some 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines from Grand Rapids, Michigan, out of Toledo just before the unit was suppose to start a weekend of urban warfare training downtown.

The mayor’s spokesperson Brian Schwartz said, “the mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people. He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area.”

Toledo police said they knew about the training and had approved the unit’s use of the Madison Building and the Promenade Park area. The training was scheduled to start Friday afternoon and last until Sunday. Police said the unit’s presence would have a minimal impact on the city. Police issued a press release earlier in the week saying the marines would be wearing green camouflage uniforms, operate military vehicles, carry rifles, perform foot patrols, and fire blank ammunitiion during the exercise.

Schwartz said there was a breakdown in communication between police and the Finkbeiner administration that led to the mayor’s action.

“The marines drilled here three times during the Ford administration and once under the Finkbeiner administration. After the last visit, the mayor told then police chief Jack Smith, that he did not want the marines back. Smith failed to inform the current police administration of the mayor’s feelings,” Schwartz said.

NBC24 spoke to Jack Smith who recalled that after the marines last visit, he and the mayor had a heated exchange about the training.

“He told me he did not want them, as he put it, “playing war in Toledo’”, Smith recalled. I told him, as a former marine, “that if one young marine’s life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience.”

Smith said if the mayor objected, then he should have been the one to convey those feelings to police. Smith took his run-in with the mayor as an objection to that last visit, and not future training in Toledo.

As a result, the Toledo police went ahead, granting approval to the 1-24th Marines to conduct the routine exercise. The police notified members of the Finkbeiner administration, who were not aware that the mayor objected to unit’s training in Toledo.

When the mayor found out, he sent a member of his staff to tell marines they could not conduct urban operations in Toledo.

The unit was notified about 3:30 p.m. after an advance team arrived in Toledo. Five buses carrying some 200 marines traveled four hours from Grand Rapids, only to find out the training had been shot down.

The unit briefly stopped at a another 1-24th marine base in Perryburg Township, then returned back to Grand Rapids where training was expected to be held this weekend.

A spokesperson for the marines said they were disappointed by the mayor’s decision especially after the city had been so helpful in the past.

That man should be ashamed of himself. Any town should be proud to have the Marines hone their skills in their town … Finkbinker, you clown fuck.

That mayor should be deported to either Charles de Gaulle airport outside Paris or Frankfurt airport in Germany where he’ll find heavily armed military guards walking through the terminal.

  19. The Jester

These guys replaced my unit in Iraq last year. Good group of guys and they took a beating in Fallujah and the area south. I think the whole 1/24 lost 22 guys (including augments). Here they are a year later, regrouped and ready to learn and train from their expirences and mistakes in challenging urban warfare.

Another American town showing their thanks to the guys on the ground.

  20. Swanny

give the guy a break, with a name like that he has no choice but to be a jackass (Finbeiner-is that for real? sounds like a Chevy Chase psuedonym) and who in the hell is the hippie-wannabe kid next to him with a bead necklace? maybe the Marines frightened bead boy, the mayor’s young lover?

  21. Vanessa

Funny thing is they would be the first and the loudest to demand quick efficient action in a catastrophe.

What a pompus preening pretentious ass he is.

    A coward and a fool.

  22. Goodbye Natalie

Looks like another candidate city for federal fund removal. Add it up, yank the funding, divide it up between the military men.

Is this is what passes for a mayor anymore? Fink beaner is right. I’ve seen more qualified looking candidates at annual Star Trek conventions with large beer guts and dressed with pointy ears.

  23. franchie

    CathyH

right, even in Paris TGV stations

that doesn’t bother us, we like our militaries

  24. navywave61

Do you suppose Jim DeMint would be willing to add Toledo to the list along with Berzerkly? Every city that denies our military anything they need should be denied ALL tax dollars. What a load of crap!

  29. RJI

    Which one is the Mayor?

  30. franchie

what you mean John, the musical comedy, or the TV serie with Gerard Depardieu as Jean Valjean ?

  31. John Cunningham

Franchie, it was taped in ‘95 at Albert Hall, the tenth anniversary of it’s opening. Had the original Valjean and it was a concert not the complete show. Full orchestra, they used sur-titles to tell you what would have been going on if it was the complete staging. Not exactly what I thought it was going to be because I had just gotten in and had it on for maybe ten minutes. I had heard some of the music over the years, but never saw the whole thing. And, I guess I still haven’t. I only ever saw “Oliver” in the 70s, but some of the hit tunes from a lot of those shows over the years haven’t been too bad. But, “Les Mis’ had a sound that set it a part from the others, I sensed it must have a full force sound and that come over in what I heard last night. Unfortunately I had just come in from having had five pints and some I missed due to dozing.

  32. franchie

“Unfortunately I had just come in from having had five pints”

think that your proxy hospital will have to breed stomach cells for replacing your “rotten” one, thus you have to spare for the operation

then thas was the musical version ; I never saw it either, one of the singers, Quasimodo, was Canadian : Garou ; don’t remember the other names ; Anyway it was a big commercial success ; I don’t really enjoy this kind of enterprise, there were interesting creations in “operettes” or “comical opera”, but you have to live in Paris or nearby to have the chance to watch them

  33. franchie

uh, I got mixed with “Notre-Dame of Paris”, another Victor Hugo romance thas was also a succesful musical comedy.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Mis%C3%A9rables_%28musical%29

Well, seems that Victor Hugo is very priced across the pond ; here, he is just one of the famous men of our litterature history

  34. john ruof

if there’s a fault w/democracy it is that nut jobs like this mayor enjoy freedom of speech WHICH WAS & STILL IS AT THE COST OF OUR MILITARY MEN & WOMWN …… yes, there is freeedom of speech but they can & hopefully will be recrimnations……. TO OUR U.S SENATORS: ADD THIS TOWN TO THE BERKLEY BILL, INSIST THAT NEITHER FLY THE AMERICAN FLAG (be able/allowed to)! ……..

  35. Andrew McSweeny

As a resident of Toledo I have to agree with the mayor’s position. His decision is a necessary response to the behavior of Toledo police during the last three exercises, where officers accused curious Toledo residents, who were videotaping the exercises, of being affiliated with Al Qaeda. It’s impossible to host these exercises without cooperation between the participants, mayor, police, and residents.

To everyone calling him “Fink beaner”… STFU! Beaner is derogatory towards mexicans, who I get the impression you don’t like much either. Seems no one know that around here since we had a fucking coffee house with that name for years. Secondly, this is not a Marine field trip, it is heavily planned and intrusive in our area. I know this because about three winters ago I walked out of a downtown building to find Marines walking around the streets in patrol mode. You know what I thought? Shit’s going down. In reality, nothing was happening but the slow and gradual move towards a defenseless civilian population and a hyper active military population. We have the strongest and best funded military in the world. They do not need to be active in civilian areas for ANY reason at this time. I do not want my kids growing up thinking that military patrols on the streets is the norm. You want to talk about doing something good for the soldiers, lobby your congressman for more military scholarships and veterans support. Quit acting like a bunch of 3rd graders parroting the same “ass clown” “fucktard” comments. You all seem like there is a “support the troops” club and the one who parrots the most juvenile crap isn’t gay. If supporting the troops means I gotta think and talk like you, the troops are doomed. I seriously get depressed reading this shit, no one spells correctly or even puts together coherent statements. get a clue.

  37. franchie

though, your marines need a real context for training too, as it seems that mostly what they’ll have to fight for are urbain guerillas or embuscades ; our militaries do that from time to time ; but the mayor and the population are told before, through the medias.

  38. Birdddog

Jared…fuck you ass clown. If you don’t like it fucktard..then go else where

  39. tom

    Jared:
“You want to talk about doing something good for the soldiers, lobby your congressman for more military scholarships and veterans support.” Agreed.

“I do not want my kids growing up thinking that military patrols on the streets is the norm.”

Then grow some balls and let the Marines prepare to do battle against Islamists abroad, or military patrols will be the norm at home. Better yet, just move to Berkely. You are scared of the wrong people: the enemy wears a man-dress, not the Eagle Globe & Anchor. Fucktard.

  40. Jared

Good one Tom. Nothing will prepare the Marines better for our current theater of war than patrolling Toledo. Incredible similarity. I’m sure you are aware that the military keeps fake cities that it trains in, live fire and all. These cities can be customized to their needs. I’m in support of a strong military for defense of our borders. I’m in support of a strong Guard in support of our civilians. I think you have forgotten the history of our founders, where they came from and the wisdom they had gained from that.

  41. tom

    Jared:
You are dodging the issue. The issue here is your discomfort and fear of Marines training in your hometown. You seem to think that you know better than our commanders as to what would prepare them for urban combat. My point is that you do not.

As a footnote, you should understand that our founders had faith and confidence in their military commanders and their training and tactics. You do your job and let them do theirs.

  42. Jared

I am wary of undue power by those who can wield it. I am not uncomfortable with the Marines. They are here there and anywhere for the job. I am wary of those in and around the government getting more and more power and ordering obedient soldiers to do their bidding. If economic catastrophe struck and revelations of extreme embezzlement or even further cronyism (than we see now) came to light, I assure you the American people would riot by the next morning. If these crooks were within the government, tied to the government, or had friends in the government, don’t doubt that the military would be used to subdue the population. I sleep well at night knowing that the American people can take matters into their own hands to deal with domestic issues. Those rights have been given as inalienable rights and further enforced by the Constitution. I sleep well at night knowing that the National Guard and police are ready (or should be) to help in a relief situation if Congress authorizes it. I similarly sleep just fine knowing that the Marines are doing their job. The Military was never meant to patrol the citizenry, there are well reasoned laws about that.
