“Paul Kersey: Nothing to do but cut and run, huh? What else? What about the old American social custom of self-defense? If the police don’t defend us, maybe we ought to do it ourselves.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:59 pmJack Toby: We’re not pioneers anymore, Dad.
Paul Kersey: What are we, Jack?
Jack Toby: What do you mean?
Paul Kersey: I mean, if we’re not pioneers, what have we become? What do you call people who, when they’re faced with a condition or fear, do nothing about it, they just run and hide?
Jack Toby: Civilized?
Paul Kersey: No.”
True gun control means never having to say “I missed you”
March 17th, 2008 at 5:05 pmI have a whole bunch of them. Big time 2nd Amendment guy. Wish I could get some of the cool stuff here in California that some of you other guys can get.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:06 pm2 rounds center mass, one round to the head. That’s control.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:16 pmI am FOR Gun Control …
I believe we need the threat of a citizenry that privately owns GUNS to CONTROL a government that is on the verge of tearing up the United States Constitution and stripping us of our Rights.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:17 pmA man call 911 and says, “There’s someone trying to break into my house!”
After taking down his address, the dispatcher says, “Someone will be there in 20 minutes.” The homeowner hangs up, then calls a minute later.
“Don’t worry, I shot the guy,” he says.
“What?!” the dispatcher yells, but the guy hangs up.
The cops arrive within two minutes, and arrest a crook running out of the house.
“They said you shot him,” the cop said.
“They said you wouldn’t be here for 20 minutes,” the homeowner replied.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pmThe Governments idea of Gun Control means the Criminals will be in control of the guns.
They can kiss my ass, I’ll go to jail before I hand over my weapons.

In great state of Kansas agrees with you:
The people have the right to bear arms for their defense and security; but standing armies, in time of peace, are dangerous to liberty, and shall not be tolerated, and the military shall be in strict subordination to the civil power.
March 17th, 2008 at 5:31 pmI don’t own a gun now, but I will buy something in the near future. Any suggestions for 22 year old guy on a limited budget?
March 17th, 2008 at 5:34 pmPistol or Rifle?
March 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pmPaslode
March 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pmOn both
@jackal:
Try out a lot of different guns before you settle on one.
At the absolute least, you should have a pump-action shotgun. That cha-chunk sound takes all the fight out of most punks.
Rifles are good for hunting and target shooting, but not much use in close quarters, especially since you’d be surprised how far a .308 round can go and how many walls it can penetrate, especially that sheetrock shit that everyone uses these days.
As for pistols, never use a caliber that starts with less than a .4.

March 17th, 2008 at 6:12 pmA good weapon on a budget is the HighPoint 9mm or 40 caliber carbine. Really good weapon for the price.
Thanks ticticboom.
March 17th, 2008 at 6:13 pmThank you RemberOurFathers.
March 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pmDoes anyone know a good weapons retailer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area?

“Never use a caliber that starts with less than .4″
9×19mm NATO is plenty of firepower with modern jacketed hollow-point ammunition (Gold Dot, Ranger, TAP, etc) and produces similar terminal ballistics to .40 S&W .45 ACP. That .4 myth only applies to military combat cartridges, which are forced to use full-metal-jacketed bullets and thus need the extra size.

If this is a defensive handgun (not for plinking) think twice before buying the cheap stuff. When you’re getting ready to defend yourself, do you want to know that you bought the cheapest gun? The old adage is true, that you get what you pay for. A new Glock can be found around $450-500, and in the same price range you can also get an FN Herstal FNP-9, or a CZ-75B. For a tad more there’s Heckler and Koch, and Sig. All great companies with stellar reputations with regard to accuracy and reliability. Ultimately, you shouldn’t rely on the internet to make your decision… go out and find a friend who’s experienced with firearms and will help you pick the right gun.
Oh, and I’m 20, saving up for my first pistol Probably gonna be a Glock 19.
March 17th, 2008 at 6:44 pm@Jackal…
March 17th, 2008 at 6:45 pmBuy a rifle with good range and a flat trajectory. Get a good scope. Shoot often and make yourself a straight shooter. Spend a little more on this one…
Buy a cheap handgun. Don’t spend a lot for something that will hang out under the seat in your truck. ROF mentioned High Point. Excellent choice for inexpensive weaponry.
Shoot it at every chance you get and get comfortable with it.
Go and shoot pigs and deer and gophers or whatever. Don’t waste all your ammo on targets.
Learn to kill…
It may come in handy.
If guns are banned can we use swords?
March 17th, 2008 at 6:54 pmJackal3886
Definitely try out some different handguns to find which suits you better. For home defense, I am with TicTicBoom on the shotgun.
In the DFW area, there is DFW Gun Club that is off of 35E and Mockingbird (I think) and then there is Bullet Trap in Plano. I know about Bullet Trap because I try to visit there every quarter to refresh. Both have gun rental counters and indoor firing ranges so you can test fire before you buy. I know Bullet Trap has an adequate range of manufacturers and calibers for you to try out.

Good Luck in your search, have fun shooting and let us know what you decide on!
March 17th, 2008 at 7:09 pm@pogman:
They banned guns in the UK. Now they’re banning swords, knives, and baseball bats.
Anyone ever read ‘The Weapon’ by Micheal Williamson?
March 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pmI’m picking up an AR-15 tomorrow.
March 17th, 2008 at 8:21 pmAny suggestions on cheap but decent brands of ammo?
@jackal
Go see Larry at the Beretta Gallery in Highland Park Village. The new 90-two and PX4 storm are excellent shooting weapons that are highly accurate and built with design and feel that lesser pistols just don’t possess. Larry sold me a .40 cal 90-two for 630, about 100 less than everyone else wanted for it. Super safe, super deadly.
Do not buy a 9mm. As a Texas concealed handgun license holder, you will be responsible for the bullet should it pass through the offender and hit another person. A 9 mm will go through 2 people faster than shit. A .40 and above will hit like a ton of brinks flying faster than the speed of sound and quickly incapacitate a mother fucker.
Be a good Texan and get your CHL licence from dr gilreath in ft worth…1 day class, 99 bucks. Can’t beat it.

March 17th, 2008 at 10:47 pmProper Gun Control:
“Taking the correct grasp of your hand on the grip of your pistol, pull straight up from the holster, bring the weapon forward, in an upward sweeping motion, while at the same time moving your off hand over to take a second, steadying grasp upon the weapon. Now using both hands, assume the proper stance with your feet, while at the same time raising the weapon to eye level, bring both the front sight and the rear sight into view, and align the sights with your intended target. Now while slightly holding your breath, squeeze the trigger, thus firing the weapon. Realign your sights, slightly hold your breath and again squeeze the trigger. Continue to fire the weapon until the target is down and the threat has ceased.”
That, ladies and gentlemen, is proper gun control. Using a Weaver, Modified Weaver, Isoceles, or one handed FBI stance is all up to the individual.

It was great meeting you this weekend!!
Great advice!! Already planning on picking up a .4 at the next gun show!!

Everyone has an opinion on what is best rifle for you.
My opinion:
DPMS is the low end (I wouldn’t suggest DPMS), Bushmaster or Rockriver arms. Then S&W MP15. Then Colt, LMT, Novaske, and a few others. Visit AR15.com and browse the info there.
Don’t build one.
I have an LMT Defender 2000 MRP CQB 16″ and it is likely more gun than I will ever need. But I appreciate quality and I wanted what many consider a top quality rifle.
And long as it shoots 5.56 Nato and is reliable, the name on the side doesn’t matter.
March 18th, 2008 at 7:39 amWhen they ban all weapons, I will be glad I at least know Jo Jitzu. He lives next door to me.

This is pretty much the rifle I picked up today.

Being a total novice, I assume I’ll be the worst shot in the world for a while.
I figure as I become a better marksman, I’ll “catch up” to the accuracy of the weapon.
My question was about ammunition.
Where do I get affordable, high quality ammo?
A friend told me to buy in bulk on the internet.
March 18th, 2008 at 4:54 pmWas he right? Or should I look to the local brick and mortar gun shops?
