April 7th, 2008 at 9:14 amPrice is around 800-1425.00 but I hear you can’t buy one.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:33 amIt’s also a 5.56mm…which I didn’t hear mentioned in the clip.
SO OUR ARMY AND MARINE CORPS CONTINUE TO PURCHASE THE M4 FROM LTGEN BILLY KEYES USMC RET CEO OF COLT AND IGNORE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE HK-416. WHAT A COUNTRY….LET’S SEE WHAT WAS THE COST OF THE 1 B2 BOMBER THAT RECENTLY CRASHED IN GUAM? HOW MANY HK-416S COULD WE BUY FOR A BILLION DOLLARS?????????????
April 7th, 2008 at 9:43 amThis would be a cool weapon in the 6.8mm round. The 6.8mm round packs more punch at over 400yds than the 5.56mm with the same accuracy.
Always like punch and accuracy when shootin varmits.
April 7th, 2008 at 9:52 amYeah, I would prefer the 6.8 SPC instead of the 5.56 NATO crap. Although it was 7.62 that worked the best for me in Iraq.
April 7th, 2008 at 10:13 amBeans, I thought your preferred caliber is 120mm?
6.8 SPC, in my opinion, would be ideal for this weapon.
April 7th, 2008 at 10:51 amso is this one better than the magpul masada? because I know that one can quickly be adapted to fire 7.62 right?
April 7th, 2008 at 12:51 pmI myself prefer firepower & accuracy of the big 16″/50 caliber naval rifles.
But yeah, I hate the direct impingement gas system, and the 5.56mm. There’s also the SCAR-Ls & SCAR-Hs.
April 7th, 2008 at 12:59 pmIf we’re going to fight Eskimos, we should hire Glock to develop the weapons.
Who will we be fighting and where?
I am inclined to a weapon that performs in dirty, dusty conditions. Something that stands up to a lot of abuse and the ability to perform without routine cleaning.
I’m no expert (as many here are), but my favorite weapon for close quarters is a 12-gauge pushing deer slugs out the nose.
Further away? Springfield’s White Feather.
Still further? An A-10 Warthog with radio hookup.
Further still?
A Republican with one hand on the red button and the other cradling a glass of good Kentucky bourbon.

I’ll drink to that
April 7th, 2008 at 1:32 pmCool video.
From the HK416 wiki page; The MR223 is a semi-automatic civilian version of the HK416 announced in 2007 and slated to be released in the third quarter of 2008.

April 7th, 2008 at 1:50 pmThe H&K 416 is a nice weapon. It’s really just an M16 style rifle with improvements in two areas…the operating system (gas piston / rod / valve as opposed to the original direct gas impingment system), and the magazine is redesigned. Larry Vickers (ex-US Army SF) did most of the development on it.
If they ever do release it to the civie world (H&K has gone back and forth the last few years about whether they’ll do it) I think it will be 5.56mm only (no 6.8 SPC).
Not that 5.56 is bad in anyway for home use / self defense…it only lacks perceived knockdown power because the Military isn’t allowed to use expanding bullets (like hollow points). Ball ammo (especially NATO M855 with a steel penetrator core) in such a small diameter and at such high velocity, can blow right through without creating a large wound channel unless it hits something with some mass that will cause it to fragment. That’s why M855 isn’t that well liked in general (at least in terms of knockdown power for the Military), unless you are shooting through objects to get to your target. M193 isn’t a whole lot better really. It’s lighter and faster, but that presents the same type of problems.
But for home use you can use whatever bullet that is available to buy (I like the heavier 77 gr Hollow Point). And the regular direct gas system is fine for home use as long as you take care of your firearm. Keep it clean, don’t convert it to full auto (the receiver / chamber get carbon fouled pretty quick on full auto with a direct gas system), and it will work fine.
If you really want the best and you feel you need the extra reliability of the gas piston system, and you want it in 6.8 SPC, then I recommend LWRC. I think it’s nicer than the H&K…better quality and excellent engineering. And it’s made in the USA.
It is expensive though (about $2,000 for a complete rifle), and if you can’t find a dealer who has one (either complete or you can buy the upper receiver separately if you already have an AR-15 style) you’ll be waiting a while. Last time I checked they’re back ordered for 3-4 months.

A couple of other USA designed and manufactured gas piston type AR-15 / M16 / M4 style rifles (I have no experience with these, except for looking at them before I bought the LWRC):
